Easter is nearly here, bringing with it signs of spring. One of my favorite things on these special days is to gather my family and friends to share good food, stories and of course, add to the place in my mind that stores so many precious memories.

I find as time passes, these memories and unforgettable moments become even more priceless once a loved one is no longer seated at the table.

The Western Nevada College Student Veterans Club is inviting veterans and their families to a barbeque today, March 27, at the Carson City campus.

The free event, which features traditional barbecue fare, takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the lawn and plaza area outside the Dini Library and Student Center.

John Arthur “Jack” Johnson was a black heavyweight boxing champion from 1908 to 1915. On July 4, 1910 Johnson defended his title against former boxing legend James Jeffries in Reno. He won the fight, but the victory ignited race riots all over the country.

Johnson had several relationships with white women, which only added to the outrage over his race. In October of 1912, Johnson was convicted for transferring women across state lines for immoral reasons.

Capital Christian Center will host a city-wide Easter Egg Hunt at Carson High School Saturday, March 30, beginning at 10 a.m.. There will be more than 12,000 eggs for the hunt, a holiday ham give away and pictures with the Easter bunny.

They will also be using the time to “beautify” the CHS campus as with 150-plus volunteers to pull weeds, rake, sweep, etc.

Former Nevada Gov. Bob Miller returned to Carson City on Monday, bringing a bit of controversial history with him.
Miller, Nevada longest serving governor at 10 years, was back in the capital city for a book signing for his just released, “Son of a Gambling Man: My Journey from a Casino Family to the Governor’s Mansion.”
