Road Closure Announcement for Douglas County: Riverview Road

The Road Department will be closing eastbound Riverview Road next Wednesday and Thursday to do annual crack sealing.

Traffic coming westbound from US 395 will still be able to pass through the work zone.

Carson City deputies arrested a man and a woman for felony child abuse, neglect and endangerment after they left their three small children home alone for hours.

Renowned Composer, Sonatherapist, and Ordained Minister Reverend Dr. Gary Robert Buchanan Dies at 72

Reverend Dr. Gary Robert Buchanan, local composer, conductor, Sonatherapist, minister at the International Community of Christ, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away on October 16, 2020, after a year-long fight against cancer. He is survived by his wife Amanda Buchanan, sons Bradley Buchanan of Ventura, California, and Kym Buchanan of Wisconsin, daughter Amy Buchanan-Rodriquez of Reno, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

DETR: Regular UI initial claims moderate, PUA initial claims increase noticeably; PEUC claims at 75,000

For the week ending October 17, initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 8,734 down 230 claims, or 2.6 percent, compared to last week’s total of 8,964 claims, according to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

Through the week ending October 17, there have been 728,045 initial claims filed in 2020, 706,393 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

Fishing Report: Pyramid Lake to open for the season Nov. 2 while other lakes shut down for winter

Hello fellow anglers. In only a couple weeks time, we are going from fall to winter (but only briefly and then right back to fall). Still, it is a stern reminder that winter is right around the corner.

Last weekend, Renee and I fished the Truckee River with a friend. At 7 a.m. we were wearing flannels and jackets, by noon, we were back in tee shirts.

The fishing was very slow, but we did manage a few small rainbows to take our lures.

Supreme Court and Court of Appeals candidates to speak at Carson City Democratic tele-luncheon

Judicial candidates Ozzie Fumo and Bonnie Bulla will be the featured speakers at Monday's virtual Democratic luncheon. Fumo, Nevada State Assemblyman for District 21 in Las Vegas, is running for Nevada Supreme Court, Seat D. Bulla, who was appointed to Department 3 of the Nevada Court of Appeals by Governor Steve Sisolak in February 2019, is running to retain that seat.

The 2021 Americanism Essay Contest is underway and available to all children from 7-12th grade. The guidelines have been distributed to Quad County Schools. This year’s theme: “The Bill of Rights and me”. Grand prize is $5,000.

Golf tournament, fundraisers, railbike tours and more highlight weekend events around Carson City

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. The Nevada Day Golf Tournament in remembrance of Mayor Bob Crowell will be held at Silver Oak Ranch Golf Course on Saturday. Dozens of fundraisers, including the Benson’s Feed 4 Paws 4-H group, will be scattered throughout the Carson City and Gardnerville areas.
