Mac the Naw: Lots of snow at the higher Sierra lakes, fishing strong where you can get in

Hello fellow anglers. It is hard to believe it is May 2017, especially with most of the higher lakes still with snow on them. Many of our back country lakes won't be accessible until mid to late June and possibly into July.

So many things deserve to be in this first sentence: do I mention the annual West Side Bike Month Cruiser Ride, make a Star Wars pun about May the Fourth, or focus on the Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony? What I love most about Carson City is our ability to be outdoorsy, patriotic, geeky, and none of the above - all at the same time. The names of all fallen peace officers killed in the line duty throughout state history were read Wednesday night in a public gathering that precedes the 20th Annual Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial ceremony scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday on the Capitol grounds in Carson City.

Update on Forest Service campground opening dates at Lake Tahoe

Forest Service campgrounds in the Lake Tahoe Basin are scheduled to open May 12, 2017. However, campgrounds on the West Shore still have a large amount of snow at lake level, which will delay their opening. Meeks Bay Campground will open on May 19, 2017, and Kaspian and William Kent campgrounds will open on June 2, 2017.

Western Nevada College Motorcycle Rider Course

Registration is now open for the 2017 Motorcycle Rider Course classes. WNC uses the Motorcycle Safety Foundation curriculum for the Basic Rider Course (BRC) - $160, Basic Rider Course II - $85 and the Advanced Rider Course (ARC) $85.
