Friday Sept. 13, no bad luck on this day, beginning at 1:18 p.m. was an assembly in the Big Gym during the last class of the day as an introduction to CHS’ Happiest Homecoming on Earth. Leadership students led the assembly with the first activity being the introduction of the Homecoming King and Queen candidates who made their grand entrance onto the floor.

It’s going to get hot again today with a high of 93, but don’t worry, as we get out further into the week the weather will turn more autumnal with highs in the 70s. It could be the last hot day for a while, at least until a freak 90s+ hot day in November followed by a week long blizzard, so enjoy it while it’s here!

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region packed with excitement over the next three days. Events include the Silver State Art Festival at Fuji Park, suicide awareness walks in Carson City, a Celtic faire at Dangberg Home Ranch, the ninth annual Edible Pedal bike ride at Bowers Mansion, train rides in Virginia City and much more!

Chambered for Charity, an unincorporated non-profit, invites community members to sign up for the first Aim to Cure Sporting Clays Shoot on Sept. 21, 2019 at the Capitol City Gun Club in Carson City, Nev.

Chambered for Charity was formed by the women of two local Reno companies, Legacy Sports International and Reno Cerakote. Their mission is “to enhance the lives of others through charitable donations while promoting the safe, responsible use of firearms.”

It was a day like any other when ShaRae Staley woke on August 3 in her home on N. Edmonds Street in Carson City. She received a message from her husband, who she had separated from six weeks previous, that he wanted to come over and make their children breakfast and take them to the park. ShaRae agreed, as any mother would.

When her husband, Cortney Staley, arrived, nothing seemed amiss. He came and made their children breakfast, and she went to work.

The first Women’s Leadership & Legacy Retreat in Tahoe will be featured Thursday and Friday, Sept. 19-20 at Tahoe Beach Retreat.

The 6th Annual Kiwanis Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Run will take place on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019. Proceeds from the event will support Pancreatic Cancer Research and local academic scholarships.

There are three walk/run events this year. There is a 2-Mile walk/run, an 8K event, and a 1-Mile walk/run for kids 12 and under.

Battle Born Chapter DAR and Ft. Churchill Society Children of the American Revolution invite the public to "Celebrate the Charters of Freedom" this Sunday, Sept. 15, 2019 at 2 p.m. in the Ormsby Room, located in the Sheriff's Office, 911 E. Musser Street, Carson City.

Featured speaker is Jason Woodbury, District Attorney of Carson City who will speak on " Rascals and Rebels: Uprisings that Sparked America."

Nevada Health Centers’ Mammovan will make stops in Reno and Carson City this week. Mammography screenings are primarily for women age 40 and older; however, screenings will be provided to those younger than 40 that have a screening referral from a provider.

CARSON CITY — The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment – the most significant milestone towards women’s equality in American history. With the centennial celebration of women’s voting rights on the horizon, the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office is excited to launch its “Nevada Women’s Cultural Resource Project,” which will help tell the story of women’s suffrage and social history in Nevada.

Heading into Monday, Labor Day 2019, we're looking at continued sunny skies, with daytime highs in the low 90s. There's no better place than Virginia City for a parade, and the Comstock continues to honor those who use elbow grease to keep the gears of our great American way grinding. Thank you. Heading into Labor Day weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next four days, which include guided tours at the Nevada State Museum, movie showings at Mills and Schulz Ranch Park, a school supply car cruise and Bingo fundraiser at the Carson Mall, trash pickup at Lake Tahoe, a Rolling Stones tribute band at Carson Nugget, Virginia City’s Labor Day Parade and more!

Marching forward to the midweek, Wednesday, August 28, 2019 will continue to bring sunny skies with a chance of isolated thunderstorms around the capital city. Ahead for the day includes NNDA's Business Edge breakfast at Carson Valley Inn, A "Lunch and Learn" workshop at Carson Nugget, art showings, a Chautauqua presentation of "Sisters of the Sage" at Dangberg Historic Park, Salsa dancing and more.

Each day, while many parents are packing lunches for their school children, Mr. Patrick Turner, third grade teacher at Bordewich Bray Elementary School in Carson City, finishes tying things up neatly in a bow — more specifically, his bow tie.

Start your weekend off with a fun Poker Run. This Poker Run is open to the public. All motorcycles and cars are welcome.

Run date is Saturday, Aug. 31, 2019 and open to age 21 and over. The first stop in Virginia City will be open at 11 a.m. with the other stops being local in Carson City.

The Status of Women in Nevada will host their monthly meeting on Thursday, Sept. 19 starting at 12 noon at the Carson Nugget in Carson City. We will be sitting at the high table in the Alatte Coffee Shop.

Nevada Republicans meet in Winnemucca September 7 to elect our leaders for the 2020 campaign. We need to turn Nevada red for two reasons: 1) to help re-elect Donald Trump president; and 2) to win enough legislative seats to assure the 2021 redistricting will be a fair process, not another Democrat gerrymandering riot.

Among upcoming events: Thursday is the final day of the Jukebox International Film Festival at the Carson City Community Center. Take in a film screening and talk to the filmmakers who made them. There's a Polka Dot Powerhouse Carson City lunch connect at Red's Old 395 Grill, plus Food Truck Thursday at Mills Park and a volunteer expo hosted by Leadership Douglas County. There's also a discussion about aviation history and trends at the Nevada State Museum, a Carson City GOP information meeting on Block Chain technology, Jazz and Beyond music festival events and more. This week, I got into a rousing text conversation about feeling imprisoned. We spoke about obligations, duty, and ultimately — the choices that led up to those imprisonments. Prison isn’t just a place for criminals to go to pay their retribution to society. We can create prisons for ourselves and not even know it.

August closes with a Chautauqua presentation “Sisters of the Sage” which will highlight the lives of Annie H. Martin, Lillian V. Finnegan and Anna N. Harris at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, August 28, at 6:30 p.m.

Heading into Thursday, August 15, 2019 we can expect hot weather to continue with high temperatures near 100. Among events for the day, there will be a wreath remembrance ceremony for fallen Carson City law enforcement officers at the sheriff's office, a Muscle Powered morning hike, art showings, and a meeting of the Status of Women in Nevada group at the Carson Nugget. As part of the Jazz and Beyond music festival, there will be an outdoor "Woodstock Remembered" concert at Comma Coffee and a music presentation, "All About that Bass" by Scot Marshall and Friends at the Nevada State Museum.
