Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the South Carson Complete Streets Project groundbreaking ceremony, the International Film Festival held Friday and Saturday at the Carson City Community Center and Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada celebrate National Girl Scout Cookie weekend with door-to-door cookie sales. Heading into the backend of the work week, events lined up Thursday include day 1 of the 7th annual International Film Festival at the Carson City Community Center, a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, a free information session on the legal and financial aspects of long-term care hosted by Carson Tahoe Care Center, the Carson City GOP will host a meeting to discuss precinct organization, plus trivia night at Bella Vita Bistro, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike and a lecture on women’s suffrage movement history in Nevada. More springlike weather around the capital city is ahead Ash Wednesday with a daytime high near 65. Events include a Real ID town hall meeting at the Carson City DMV, the economic impact of pro soccer in Northern Nevada will be featured at NNDA's Business Edge at Casino Fandango, Carson City Schools offers the first of three pre-kindergarten programs for parents and will also host a separate strategic plan meeting. Meanwhile, Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness hosts a yoga class, plus Salsa dancing at Yaple's Ballroom, country and pop dancing at Carson Lanes, a safety workshop for women and more.

Heading into Tuesday, activities and events lined up around the capital city include morning and evening walks hosted by Muscle Powered, a Relay for Life fundraiser at Firehouse Subs, a regular meeting of the Carson City School Board, the Nevada Artists Association Judged Winter Show at its Brewery Arts Center gallery, Carson Victory Rollers present a new skater program, plus classes at Yaple's Ballroom and more.

On a recent holiday weekend, hundreds of visitors snapped selfies with a two-legged bear while sledding at Lake Tahoe. The “Take Care” bear mingled with families reminding them to throw away their broken sleds, rather than leaving them littered on the snow.

After a gangbuster start to the winter season, a lot of us in Tahoe are wondering where all the snow has gone. Sitting here at the end of February with snowpack numbers dwindling, snow lovers are chomping at the bit, waiting to see the storm track shift back our way.

I turned my sprinklers on this past week. So did my gardening neighbor Roni. Her comment was “Ugh!” Mine was “On. Off. Drain. Repeat.” Turning drip systems and sprinklers on and off is tedious, but necessary. We haven’t had enough rain or snow to thoroughly soak the ground.

There's also a joint meeting of the school board and the board of supervisors, and a documentary viewing and discussion of "Screenagers" hosted by the Carson City School District. For those returning from the three-day holiday weekend, Tuesday is shaping up to be a great day around the capital city. Muscle Powered will host morning and evening walks; it is the final day of early voting for the Nevada caucus, plus there's the Nevada Artists Association Judged Winter Show at its gallery in the Brewery Arts Center, classes at Yaple's Ballroom, meetings and more.

Nevada Artists Association presents the Winter Show. This is a judged show presenting a wide array of entries from Northern Nevada artists. This show runs through March 27.

Ever spend some time watching high school students having fun? They do it so naturally. There is no lack of excitement happening at Carson High School, and one of the more amazing aspects of this high school is everyone is invited to attend every event.

The National Honor Society is having a blood drive in the Carson High School library on Feb. 20 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Blood is in short supply in the winter months, but if 1 percent more of Americans donated, shortages would disappear for the foreseeable future. So come donate at Carson High School on Feb. 20. It only takes an hour, and the life you save could be your own.

It’s February already. Days are longer and happily, it will soon be planting time. According to USDA plant hardiness zone map, most of us will be relatively safe planting based on Zone 6b, with temperature lows ranging from minus 5 to 0 degrees F.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team arrested three in the area of Bryan Circle and Lompa Lane for suspected drug, firearm and other offenses, a booking report states.

The American Association of University Women holds its 20th annual Feast of Chocolate at the Carson Plaza and Event Center. Artsy Fartsy Gallery hosts its 9th annual Jewelry and Chocolate Show with several new decorative pieces. To cap-off Saturday, the legendary Cab Calloway Orchestra makes its way to the capital city.

A new Yogurt Beach location, which offers endless combinations of mix-and-match frozen yogurt and toppings, is opening up on Highway 50 East near the Dutch Bros. coffee stall and Port of Subs.

This is the second location in Carson City, with the first located at 3228 N Carson St., with locations in Gardnerville, Reno and Sparks. The new Highway 50 East location opened Thursday morning.

The CHS, NJROTC Orienteers competed in a weekend long orienteering festival in Anza Borrego State Park, Calif., Jan. 17-18. During the festival, team members competed in three different races over the two days.

Happy Saturday Carson City, and say hello to February! That means Spring must be right around the corner! I hope so at least, because Friday’s beautiful weather was enough to make me ready to say goodbye to father winter.

Heading into the weekend it sure will seem like spring around the Carson City region and even up at Lake Tahoe, with ample sunshine and near record high temperatures. By Sunday though, that will change as a strong cold front brings much colder and windier conditions with a possible quick round of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

The Carson City Department of Arts & Culture in partnership with First Lady Kathy Sisolak on Thursday proudly announced its inaugural Arts Initiative exhibition, “The First Lady Presents … Ronnie Rector,” at the Nevada Governor’s Mansion.

Benjamin Franklin, one of the best gamers of all time said, “We do not stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.” The adults sure could learn a thing or two from the students at CHS because Winterfest 2020 played out, pun intended, just like it was supposed to with Carson's Got Game being the theme.

Heading into the last weekend of January there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include a Chinese New Year Celebration at the Nevada State Museum and the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. The Carson Comedy Club hosts its first Military Appreciation Night on Friday at the Carson Nugget. Carson Valley’s 18th annual Eagles and AG Photo Contest will be underway and live music will keep the Silver State buzzing with excitement. Read on for more information.

With the annual nationwide homeless “Count Day” around the corner, two Carson High School seniors are conducting a homeless drive and have created a GoFundMe page for monetary donations to support the effort.

A weak winter storm will pass through the region Tuesday, bringing gusty winds and a chance of rain to the Carson City region and some snow across Sierra passes, according to the National Weather Service.
