It has lived on the edge of extinction since the early 1970’s when groundwater pumping caused Manse Spring, the only warm water spring in which they were found, to dry up and remaining poolfish were relocated to various locations in Nevada for safe keeping.

For anglers that fish Topaz Lake, you have until the end of the month to wet a line. As of October 1st, the lake will be closed until January 1, 2020. Weather Service in Reno produces video on upcoming winter's likely El Niño

Government weather forecasters have said there is now a better than 90 percent chance of a strong El Niño this winter and an 80 percent chance it will last until early spring of 2016. The weather phenomenon, which is warmer than normal water in the tropical Pacific, has been shaping up since spring.

Strong El Niño likely this winter but its impact to Sierra remains unclear

With California and Nevada experiencing four years of drought, an El Niño winter may be the kind of boost needed to rebuild snowpack in the Sierra and replenish dwindling water supplies in both states. Or not.
