Letter to the Editor: Schmidt vs. Kieckhefer in SD16 — an easy choice
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 06/07/2018 - 10:40amFortunately for us, both men have a long record. Gary Schmidt has been an outspoken conservative on every issue for several decades. Like me, Gary Schmidt is a Goldwater / Reagan / Trump Republican. On the other hand, the NPRI rated incumbent state senator Ben Kieckhefer as the most liberal Republican over four sessions of the legislature.
The History of Health Care
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 07/04/2017 - 4:04pmDid you know that not too long ago people did not require medical insurance? Less than fifty years ago people paid cash or used credit for medical care which was true for most of the history of our nation. Indeed, medical care was once so accessible and affordable that most people did not need insurance to pay their medical bills. Then, medical Doctors and Insurance companies began to lobby government to 'regulate' (i.e. monopolize) health care to 'improve' it.
Proposed tax hike for substance abuse gets chilly reception
Submitted by editor on Thu, 03/23/2017 - 12:08pmWhile it didn't gain much traction during the 2015 session, Democratic Sen. Tick Segerblom is hoping that newly won Democratic majorities will be more amenable to his plan raising taxes on alcohol, cigarettes and gaming licenses to help pay for expanded substance abuse programs and an experimental pilot program for supervised injectable heroin treatment.
Facts about Sales Tax
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sat, 11/05/2016 - 11:49amLet's put this silly claim by my opponent that he's the voice of reason to rest and use his supposed opposition to the 1/8th city sales tax hike to do it.
With the city Supervisor seat from Ward 4 in the balance, Jim Shirk once again wants to have things both ways in typical politician fashion by saying he voted against the sales tax hike and opposed the downtown Carson Street project, yet he leaves out important details about his voting record and value received.
As his opponent, I'm duty bound to point out the following:

The 78th Session — An Autopsy
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 06/08/2015 - 6:03pmThe elections in November 2014 were a great surprise to many and shock to some. The people swept all Democrats out of the state-wide offices, reversed the majorities in both houses of the Legislature, and by a 4-to-1 margin defeated the "margin" tax. We the Republican base were looking forward to restoring long-overdue sanity at the State level.
Challenges to Anyone Who Supported the Record Tax Hike
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 06/03/2015 - 8:52amSunday, Assemblyman Erv Nelson and others broke their key election promises to fight huge destructive tax hikes and make state government operate reasonably. Nelson used glittering generalities and platitudes to explain that he didn’t really understand matters very well back when he made his promises, even though he’s an experienced lawyer. But now he understands and so has changed his mind.
If he thinks he now understands matters correctly, then he must logically also believe that folks who voted for him based on his promises don’t understand.

Does Downtown Carson City have a parking problem or an attraction problem?
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Fri, 09/06/2013 - 7:06pmThere is a lot of energy in the downtown corridor of Carson City. Great restaurants, shopping, and character. A number of decisions, coming soon, will have an impact on the desirability of Carson City’s downtown, the city as a visitor and business relocation destination, and ultimately property values. A large faction of citizens, seem to think parking is the issue with the vitality of our downtown. Over the course of this article I’d like to uncover whether that’s really the issue or not, and bring up some important points.

A few reasons to vote NO on CC #1
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Fri, 11/02/2012 - 1:53pmWhat are we voting on? The only design that has some cost estimates is a grandiose wish list with artist’s renderings presented in July 2011 that has been pared down and down… down to what? Vote NO on CC #1.
Cost estimates vary from $28M to $49M (plus financing costs), depending on what’s included. Even with the tax hike, the intent is to raid NNDA, sewer, federal and private funds. Vote NO on CC #1.
The concept dated July 2011 shows a grandiose wish list for a public-private development. Where is the pared down wish list that CC #1 asks us to approve? Vote NO on CC #1.
Letter: League of Women Voters forum on CC #1
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 10/18/2012 - 9:37amLet me start with a disclaimer. I am not against libraries. I have an entire room dedicated to my books. But I have not used a library since I was in graduate school, because everything I needed for work was on-line or in a bookstore, too new to have made it into a library, public or private.
Info on property tax increase
Submitted by admin on Wed, 05/23/2012 - 6:37pmA reader wrote in today asking about the property tax hike the Carson City Board of Supervisors approved unanimously last week. What follows is a breakdown:
The property tax rate will go from $3.1872 to $3.66. If you do the math, that works out to a 13 percent increase. However, state law limits the amount of increase that homeowners have to pay to 3 percent per year, 6.4 percent on commercial properties. They estimate that taxes on average will increase 3 percent next year under this new rate, and account for about $3 million more than they would under the old rate.
