Independence Day isn’t until Wednesday, but the red, white, and blue celebration starts now. It won’t be quite as hot today, but it’s definitely summertime. The Library is still a great bet for all ages. Family story time happens every Thursday morning, with Lego Club offered Thursday afternoons. Shine up the chrome and head to Buffalo Wild Wings for the weekly summer cruise night. Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint is a great place for music, food, and friends: they’ll be featuring Little Mazarn on the stage tonight as the Texas group swings through the area on their cross-country tour.

THURSDAY, June 28: Things to do in Carson City

Much has changed in the last 40 years of entertainment at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe, but there’s been a constant behind-the-scenes figure, John Packer.

It’s a planes, trains, and automobiles kind of weekend. Add in bands, bikes and bar-be-ques and we’ve got most of this weekend’s list covered. The Carson City Airport is celebrating 90 years at this year’s open house and fly-in. One of the summer’s best events with balloon rides, cool old planes, and much more: you won’t want to miss it. Beat the heat at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada; all admission fees have been waived today thanks to Carson City Toyota. Summer concerts at the Brewery Arts Center begin tonight with the Original Wailers.

There is quite a bit to look forward to today, not to mention this coming weekend. The Rockabilly Riot roars into town and sets up shop at Mills Park for a whole weekend of vintage rat-rods and rock-n-roll. You’ll find the Extreme Motor Officers Challenge in the park, too, so expect it to be noisy. The Pony Express rides again, as it does every year, and retraces its historic route. Keep an eye out this evening for the rider heading east. Enjoy some blues, funk and rock courtesy of the Mylo McCormick Project at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park as part of their annual summer music series.

This is going to be an epic Fathers’ Day weekend. Carson City Off-Road sponsored by Epic Rides has taken over downtown with everything mountain bike and plays host to a free Music Festival in McFadden Plaza. Don’t miss Arts and Culture Day at the Nevada State Railroad Museum with unlimited rides on the Steam Train, special vendors, and more. Stewart Indian School will be a hotspot of activity with the annual Fathers’ Day PowWow underway. This is just the tip of the iceberg, read on for more fun than you’ll know what to do with.

She’s a grand ole flag, and there will be two ceremonies to recognize the stars and stripes in Carson City today. At 10 a.m. you can join the Nevada National Guard at the Veterans Memorial on the Capitol Grounds for presentation of the colors, speakers, and even cake for the US Army’s anniversary. You’ll find the Elks Club honoring our flag at 3 p.m. The public are invited to both events. The Army isn’t the only birthday you’ll find today; Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery celebrates its seventh year with an artist reception and new work from Denise Jenkins.

CARSON CITY — The 10th annual Concert Under the Stars, A Benefit for the Greenhouse Project, takes place Wednesday, July 11 at Brewery Arts Center, featuring Rock & Roll Hall of Famer’s Jefferson Starship and Terrapin Crossroad’s house band, Midnight North.

It’s going to be a breezy weekend, so you may want to rethink spending the day at the lake. Luckily, plenty of options are available just about anywhere you are. Carson City has a car show and Brewfest hitting the downtown corridor, and to the south, Minden and Gardnerville are having their party of the year: Carson Valley Days. It’s World Doll Day at the Nevada State Museum with special displays, activities, and a special performance by the local Young Chautauquans.

School is out in Carson City and the summer wasted no time in getting started with the fun stuff. Head down to Mills Park sometime this weekend to enjoy the Nevada State Fair, Rendezvous and Carnival. Carson Valley Days is an annual tradition for those who live in the Minden/Gardnerville area. Lampe Park will be hopping with live music, activities, and another carnival. You’ve probably noticed the very large tent erected by the Carson Mall. The Ramos Bros. Circus has come to town, and will be offering performances daily for the next 10 days. Read on, this is just the beginning.

Let’s try this again. Last week, the rain was a little too much for the Westside Cruise, so the organizers postponed it until today. The annual Westside Cruise ia a part of Bike Month, and one of the zanier events. Dress you and your bike up and head off to explore the historic district. Happy one year Anniversary to Battle Born Social. The restaurant and lounge will be celebrating with cocktails, appetizers and more; there is a $20 cover for the event, but that money will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada and Carson City Senior Center's Meals on Wheels program.

Two Eagle Valley Middle School students and two Pioneer High School students and their families experienced a tragic fire May 16 in Carson City.

Antonio and Alexis Trujillo’s family, and Jordan and Theodore Leyva’s family are now displaced following this incident.

Memorial Day weekend is often thought of as the kick-off to summer, but in Northern Nevada we know that the weather is a fickle creature. The weather should be dryer and warmer as the weekend progresses but have back-up plans for your bar-be-que, just in case. From the Downtown Carson City Ghost Walk to the Rockin’ Rib Fest at Casino Fandango, a day hike with Muscle Powered to the Spring Blinky Man night-time costumed bike pub crawl – this weekend is chock-full of fun for locals and visitors alike, for the young and young-at-heart.

Muscle Powered: Citizens for a Walkable and Bikeable Carson City announced the “No Zombie Texting” award winners May 16 at The Brewery Arts Center, showcasing winning videos so the public could see the creative endeavors of young video artists from the community.

The 20th Anniversary Senior Celebration will be held today in the Carson Nugget; free for all to attend, you’ll have the chance to visit a variety of booths with information and resources. After yesterday’s freakish hailstorm, we may as well be ready for anything. More thunderstorms might be on the way this afternoon, but I can’t promise they follow any kind of schedule. The first of the season Third Thursday Wine Walk in downtown Gardnerville is this afternoon, and you may want to bring an umbrella as you sip and stroll.

Mother’s Day is Sunday, and there will be plenty of ways for the family to enjoy spending time together all weekend long. Treat Mom to some new flowers for the garden at the annual Greenhouse Project Plant Sale. The Nevada State Museum has a day full of cowboy-related activities planned. Head up to Virginia City on the V and T for a memorable ride through the hills. Bike Month in Carson City always brings fun community activities, including the annual Celebrity Invitational Bike Ride. Strap on a helmet and join some of our town’s notables on a ride through the historic west side. Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery is holding a reception for Jean Kvam, whose oils, pastels, and pottery will be on prominent display. The Historical Societies in Dayton and Douglas County are hosting lectures this evening: you just have to decide between learning about the Nevada Women’s Project or artist Hans Mayer Kassel.

Not a cloud in the sky, and yet we have been hit by a perfect storm: Cinco de Mayo, Kentucky Derby Day, and the monthly wine walk have all collided. Let me tell you, downtown is going to be hopping, not to mention the Early Season Farmers Market making its seasonal debut in the parking lot at W. Musser and N. Nevada – just behind Due Sorella. Take the kids down to Bailys Pond at Fuji Park for the annual Tom Brooks Memorial Kids’ Fishing Day. A trip to the train museum comes with the opportunity to ride on the Historic McKeen Motor Car.

You may have noticed a few blue porch lights in your neighborhood; it’s a way to offer support for our local law enforcement officers. Today, those who have lost their lives in the line of duty will be honored at the Law Enforcement Memorial on the Nevada Capitol grounds with a ceremony, presentation of the colors, and taps.

Hold onto your hat, Carson City, we’re in for one heck of a weekend. It’ll be cowboy hats and pioneer bonnets in Genoa for Western Heritage Day. Keep an eye out for Mark Twain, plenty of music, and fun for all. Leis are the preferred accessory for Lei Day at the Nevada State Museum where you’ll be treated to Polynesian surprises and free admission. The Carson City Symphony’s Youth Strings Ensemble takes to the stage today for their spring concert, Music is for Life (Goes to the Movies), where you will hear them perform selected scores from our favorite cinema classics like James Bond and the Sound of Music. Teens can learn more about Geology during today’s STEM program at the Carson City Library, and those with a Sewing Certification can join in today’s workshop and walk away with a handy zippered bag.

I’ve been lied to before, most often by my weather app on my cell phone, and yet, I still look to it for truth. If it's to believed, springtime arrives tomorrow. I think we are all ready for some warmer, sunny days. Western Nevada College is hosting a reception for the student artists whose work is now adorning their gallery walls, go take a gander. You’ll probably want to layer up if you join Muscle Powered on today’s hike from Ash Canyon to Kings Canyon. It might be a little chilly, but the views of our valley are worth it.

As a mark of respect and in remembrance of Barbara Bush, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has ordered flags to half-staff, beginning Wednesday through sunset on the day of her interment. The former First Lady died Tuesday, April 17, 2018.

Hold onto your hats, Carson City, we’re in for a busy weekend. Several events over the last few weeks were re-scheduled due to weather: today you’ll find the make-up for The Greenhouse Project's Early Spring Plant Sale and the Carson High Safe Grad 5K Run/Walk. Get your Roller Derby fix with a scrimmage and a Junior Victory Rollers bout against Santa Cruz. The Bob Boldrick Theater at the Community Center is where you’ll find ‘Carson’s Got Talent.' Cheer on your favorite local performer and help raise funds for the Senior Center’s Meals on Wheels Program. You’ll have to keep reading, this is just the tip of the fun-time iceberg.

Well, so much for spring. Stay warm today as the wind whips into town. It’s National Library Week, and the Carson City Library isn’t shirking its duties with the Lego Club, Story time, and a sewing class in its Makerspace all happening today. They have also brought in renown speaker, author, and innovator Milton Chen to lead a panel discussion on education inside of the Brewery Arts Center’s Performance Hall.

Windy conditions will persist Wednesday afternoon and evening around Carson City while snow is expected to move into the Sierra region with impacts to travel over the mountain passes around the Lake Tahoe Basin through Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

With soggy weather here, some cancellations are inevitable. One thing you can count on, however, is the monthly Downtown Business Association’s wine walk; it’s a rain, shine, or blizzard event. Stay dry and well-fed with the Kiwanis annual BINGO Spaghetti Feed at the Carson Senior Center. Break a leg, Carson High Drama. Tonight, is opening night for their spring musical, The Secret Garden. There’s something special going on at Carson High for our community members over 50: the annual Senior/senior Friendship Prom is free to attend and a great reason to dress to the nines. Sportsman’s Warehouse celebrates ‘Ladies Night’ with raffles, games, and giveaways. The Friends of the Carson City Library have invited local author Ron Bell to the Browsers Corner Book Store for a special meet and greet and book signing.

Let’s get a jump on Easter weekend. Head down to McFadden Plaza this afternoon for kids activities, an egg hunt, and a special showing of the classic movie ‘Easter Parade.’ The beautiful weather is just begging to be celebrated, so join up with Muscle Powered for a hike up to Timberline. Bring a camera, the views of the valley will be spectacular. Happy birthday to everyone that was born in March. The Carson Cigar Company holds their monthly Birthday Thursday celebration tonight with live music featuring the Trippin King Snakes. If you’re in Dayton, swing by 1st and 10 Sports Bar tonight.
