Helene de Bossier Swanson, who completed a 7,000 mile spiritual pilgrimage on foot traveling across all 15 states that have not yet ratified the Equal Right Amendment will be staffing the table Wednesday during the International Women's Day, Empowering Women event.

Who has two thumbs and is ready for spring? This girl. Monday starts off with some icy roads so please give yourself some extra time to travel. It’s going to be quite a blustery day, but hopefully we’ve seen the end of the wet stuff for a little while. Start the week off with some fun. You can swing dance the night away at El Charro’s, sing the workweek blues at the Fox Brewpub’s karaoke night, or help Sassafras welcome guitarist Ian Moore to the stage.

The sun is shining on Carson City and all sorts of fun is blooming. It’s a great day for the kids with the Kerak Shrine Circus in Reno, cookie decorating at Genoa Candy and Coffee, and a Father-Daughter Dance at Dayton High School. Show some love to Carson High Senior Amber Reeves: she’s displaying her photography at the Brewery Arts Center for her Senior Project. Carson City Arts Gallery introduces their monthly Artist Reception tonight by welcoming Kathleen Osborne Flanagan. The nightlife tonight features music, karaoke, dancing, comedy and more. Sunday night's snow flurries give way to what should be a sunshiny week. The annual Fathers-Daughters Dance at Carson High School isn’t until March 31, but tickets go on sale today. Don’t wait until the last moment to guarantee your spot at this memorable event. Jitterbug the night away with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club; you’ll find an intermediate swing lesson and open dance at El Charro Avita. The Fox Brewpub comes to the Monday blues rescue with karaoke hosted by J and M Productions.

• Opportunity Village Day at the Nevada State Legislature

Award-winning and published Carson City artist Kathleen Osborne Flanagan will kick off the first monthly Artist Reception and Exhibition at Carson City Art Gallery, from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 2.

Even if the weather doesn’t agree, there is a spring thaw in our midst. Carson City is picking up the pace, and there’s fun to be had all over. You’ll always find a great comedian at the Carson Nugget on Fridays: this week it’s funnyman Steve Bruner. Head to Sassafras for a fun time with Sacramento indy band, Poindexter. • Senior Issues at the Nevada State Legislature

We’ll wake up to sunshine, but some snow may be in the cards this afternoon. Please drive safe when it’s slick out. ‘Our Story, Inc.’ takes you on a tour of Black History in Northern Nevada in the foyer of the Legislature; they’ll be on hand at the Carson Library this evening for a special Black History Month Celebration. Get a jump on spring cleaning and lend a hand to the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program. You’ll find their clothing drive at Red’s Old 395 from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. Show off your skills at Retro Replay if you fancy yourself a Smash Bros.

And here comes more rain. Take a stand against the wet weather and go enjoy Carson City. Karaoke can be found at SlotWorld Casino on Highway 50 East. • Touro University Nevada Day at the Nevada State Legislature

Another day off for the schoolkids and state workers and, you guessed it, it’s going to be rainy. If you need to get out for a little fun tonight, head to the Carson Cigar Company for their weekly Game Night. Dancing the night away with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club is always a good Monday option.

The Douglas County Democratic Women’s monthly luncheon is set for Monday, March 6, at the Carson Valley Inn.

We are pleased to have Anne Macquarie, Chair of the Legislative Committee of the Toiyabe Chapter of the Sierra Club, as our Speaker.

Her talk is entitled “State and Environmental Concerns.” She will talk about what is happening at the state legislature now and how the new administration in DC is impacting environmental issues.

As the three-day Presidents' Day weekend begins, Carson City has much to offer. Carson Comedy does a double-dose tonight with Rick D’Elia at the Carson Nugget and Craig ‘The Lovemaster’ Shoemaker at the Brewery Arts Center. World Dance Open Floor at Comma Coffee is like an open mic for dancers. Travel the world with the annual International Film Weekend at the Community Center; it's free and also features local Independent films. Windy, rainy days are excellent for watching movies. Luckily, the International Film Weekend kicks off today with Chinese film, ‘Wolf Totem,’ in the Community Center Theater. Show up at 3 p.m. if you want to be wowed by some independent films from students at the UNR Reynolds School of Journalism.

It may be a Monday, but there’s some sunshine, no rain, and Valentine’s is in the air. Treat your honey to a night on the town and an amazing performance by the Reno Philharmonic. For one night only, you’ll find the orchestra and special guest pianist, Conrad Tao, in the Bob Boldrick Theater. Holy moly, water everywhere. It’s not a bad idea to stay close to Carson City tonight. There's live music with Brother Dan at Living the Good Life, comedienne Kat Simmons at the Carson Nugget, or the documentary on Bill Cunningham at the Nevada State Museum that may be enough to tempt you out. Please be careful, drive safely, and keep an umbrella handy. Keep your fingers crossed this storm passes quickly – a full moon and lunar eclipse at sunset are visible to those without cloudy skies.

FRIDAY:

I just keep telling myself that the spring flowers will be amazing this year, but honestly, I’m growing weary of all this rain. Several of our hiking and bike trails have been affected, the sports fields are a muddy mess, and we are still in danger of more flooding.

The week is moving along and we are getting closer to Valentine’s Day. Don’t forget to make reservations for dinner with your sweetheart. If your loved one is an art lover, take a look inside the new Wild Horse Gallery at the Carson Mall: their grand opening is this evening. Artist Eric Holland is featured at the Rinckel Mansion and will be present for a reception tonight. Grab your thinking cap and your smartest friends for Geeks Who Drink trivia at Westside Pour House. Vocalist Jakki Ford is the guest vocalist for the jazz jam at Living the Good Life.

It’s going to be a great Tuesday, Carson City. Parks and Recreation sponsors their weekly ‘Easy Walk’ along Kings Canyon Trail. Although, if the rain continues to fall, the walk will take place at our new Multi-Purpose Athletic Center. Capital City Art Initiative celebrates the artists of Western Nevada College this evening, and then welcomes Phyllis Shafer for an illustrated discussion of her work. The Carson City Classic Cinema Club shows off a young Elizabeth Taylor tonight in the 1954 romantic drama ‘The Last Time I Saw Paris.’

TUESDAY:

A hearty welcome to the members of the 2017 Legislature and their staff. You have a busy 120 days ahead of you, but don’t forget to enjoy what Carson City has to offer you while you’re here. I hope you remembered to bring an umbrella; this week will be rainy.

The Mile High Jazz Band is canceling its performance tonight (Jan. 10) due to weather conditions affecting several of the performers. However, a combo consisting of several members of the Millennium Bugs and a number of guest performers will perform starting at 7:30 p.m., at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, across the street from the state legislature building in Carson City.

Trick-or-treating in the Nevada state capital will occur on Halloween night — Monday, October 31 — this year, according to the Carson City Manager’s Office.
