Snow Covered
A Memorial Day Message from Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell
Submitted by editor on Mon, 05/25/2015 - 10:06amWe often think of Memorial Day as a holiday that generally marks the beginning of summer and the wonderful activities that come with this season. It is a time when we join together for the family barbecue or simply enjoying the day - the peaceful and crisp mornings, the clear skies, the view of our mountains and the still snow covered peaks to our south, or indeed the smell of sagebrush and pine after a gentle rain.

Windy conditions Monday with warming trend through the week

Strong southwest crosswinds with gusts to 35-45 mph on area roads, including Highways 50 and Highway 395 and and I-580 and I-80, may result in difficult driving for high profile vehicles.

A first-time Musk Ox hunt in the High Arctic
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 08/27/2014 - 10:27pmAbout 5 miles away on the distant horizon, we could see black dots on the amazingly pure white, snow-covered, barren ground, 130 miles east of Tuktoyaktuk (Tuk), Northwest Territories, Canada.
Our guide Chuck Gruben of Tuk said there they are, let's get going.
This hunt was to be my first-ever musk ox hunt, my second-ever guided hunt.
It was something that I wanted to do for a long time.
I was sitting home one night and thought what the heck, I should go.
My wife agreed, so the necessary arrangements went into high gear.
Outdoors with Don Q: Flowers, bird and animals are her favorites subjects
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 08/14/2014 - 11:52amBy now, you know that many of the photos attached to my outdoor articles at Carson Now are those taken by my wife, Elaine. She is not a professional photographer, does not have professional photo training or professional equipment, but does possess a great natural talent for framing her photo subjects with the proper backgrounds.
Between the two of us, we have a total of three "Point and Shoot" cameras: An old Pentax Optio 750Z (The one I use), a Cannon Power Shot Sx280 HS (her favorite) and a Sony HD VCHD (her backup camera).
