Senator Square: Carson High School teacher raises money for breast cancer awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this time every year touches the heart of one of the teachers at CHS: Art teacher Mike Malley, whose mother is a breast cancer survivor, due to early detection, has decided to take breast cancer awareness to a new level by putting on a fundraising event Oct. 18 at the Trimmer Barn from 5 to 8 p.m.

Seniors train to participate in The Dolan Running Series Bowers Mansion Country Run

On Sunday, Aug. 26, a team of residents from Summit Estates Senior Living and Memory Care will take their place at the starting line for a special 1-mile event created especially for the seniors, ages 66-90, by The Dolan Running Series, produced by Reno 5000.

Local Seniors Train for the RENO 5000 JR 1 Mile Series

On Aug. 26, 2018, a team of residents from Summit Estates Senior Living and Memory Care, Reno, will take their place at the starting line for the RENO 5000 JR 1 Mile 2018 Country Run. Wearing matching team T-shirts and comfortable walking shoes, a few will have their walkers or canes in hand, but that’s okay, said Amanda Jenkins, administrator at Summit Estates. “Life is a journey and our residents embrace new experiences and challenges regardless of their age or physical abilities. They are physically and mentally ready to conquer this year’s race.”

Double-amputee joins Mission Senior Living team for Reno-Tahoe Odyssey

At the start of the 14th Annual Reno-Tahoe Odyssey Relay Run Adventure on Friday in Wingfield Park, Jonah Vandever will join runners scheduled for the 7:30 a.m. start time. Only the 20-year-old double amputee won’t be running, he’ll be hand-cycling.

Stranded skiers rescued, cited after going outside Tahoe resort boundaries

Two skiers who became lost Thursday after skiing out of bounds were rescued, one Thursday night and the other plucked Friday morning by a Blackhawk helicopter from NAS Fallon, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. Both skiers were wet and cold but otherwise escaped injuries.

Tahoe-bound snowmobilers urged to avoid areas with minimal snow

With the President's holiday weekend here and snowpack in the Lake Tahoe Basin at low levels, the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit urges snowmobilers to shift their activities to locations with adequate snow coverage, within permitted snowmobile areas.

18th Annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski & Snowshoe Celebration

The 18th Annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski & Snowshoe Celebration returns to the Sierras on Saturday, February 24 at 9:00 am, at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course in South Lake Tahoe.

The Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area (BWRA) on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest's Bridgeport Ranger District remains closed to over-snow vehicles due to lack of snow, a press release from the U.S. Forest Service said.
