What do you do with books you've already read?

You could place them back on the shelf, where they collect dust and wait to be read again some day. Or, you can follow the example of a few Carson City residents who have decided to share them with others.

Brian Reedy, Carson City Parkinson’s Advocacy and Awareness co-director, said he knew exactly who to approach to design a logo for his support group. Having spent 20 years working at Carson High School, with the tail end of his career in the Career and Technical Education program, he knew Patricia Ababio’s graphic design III and IV students would be the perfect choice.

A jazzy Tuesday has arrived. Catch the Millennial Bugs this evening as they perform in the Comma Coffee Courtyard. Take the kids up to Silver City this morning and they’ll get a chance to explore the Community Garden, learn about the plants and flowers, and participate in an activity. The Deputy Howell Memorial Concert is just a week and a half away. Attend the meeting for volunteers and help this event go off without a hitch.

Let Ev Musselman romance you at Valentine’s Day ‘Cigar Bar Style’ as he channels his inner lounge singer, ‘Cheese the Knife.’ Valentine’s Day with the Mile High Jazz Band means a Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts at Comma Coffee.

About a dozen military veterans and their families were honored Wednesday afternoon at Sierra Place Senior Living in Carson City by the state of Nevada Department of Veterans Services (NVDS) and the Municipality of Carson City.

The Nevada Department of Veterans Services NDVS will be recognizing and honoring veterans living at the Sierra Place Senior Living assisted care facility in Carson City.

Sierra Place Senior living, an independent and assisted living community located at 1111 West College Parkway in Carson City, will be hosting the Carson Valley Parkinson’s Support Group every second Tuesday of the month from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at their community. The first meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 11.

What a weekend. As the days get longer, the whole valley bustles. Monday has returned, but no fear, there is still fun to be found. Karaoke at Firkin and Fox is a great way to start off the week. Grab your dancing shoes and head to El Charro to learn some new moves with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club. Grab the kids for a night of board games at Nerdvana. For games meant for a more adult audience, the Carson Cigar Company hosts a weekly game night with drink specials for the players.

Tuesday has arrived and brings with it a splash of art, cinema, and nature. The Nevada Discovery Ride is the reason for a fundraiser and fair at Sierra Place Senior Living: learn about the ride, Nevada’s wild horses, gold-panning and more. The Carson City Classic Cinema Club brings ole blue eyes, Frank Sinatra, to the Brewery Arts Center: The Man with the Golden Arm is this month’s movie. Late artist, Craig Shephard, will be honored at the Nevada Arts Council this evening.

An independent and assisted living community in Carson City will host a fundraising event Tuesday to support a Nevada woman's effort to bring awareness and support to wild horse adoption.

The event, dubbed "Along for the Ride" will be done in support of Samantha Szesciorka, who, for the second time since 2013, will ride across Nevada by horseback to advocate for wild horses.

Are you ready for Monday? Grab the kids and hit the lanes for some Family Day bowling at Carson Lanes. Walking with ponies at the Littlest Things if fun for all ages. El Charro Avita is the place to be tonight; High Sierra Swing Dance Club hosts their weekly ‘night out,’ and will teach you something new before the open dancing begins. Downtown may be dusty, but the businesses along Carson Street still need our love. Check out karaoke at the Firkin and Fox, and don’t forget to peruse their new menu that debuts today.

The weekend has rushed by again, but Carson City still offers plenty o’ fun. The new United Federal Credit Union is offering up free Dunkin Donuts this morning as part of their weeklong Grand Opening Celebration. Take a walk with the furry friends at the Littlest Things: ponies and pooches need exercise, too. Carson Cigar Company is the place for laughs: Heads Up is today’s choice for their new game night. Join J and M Productions at the Firkin and Fox. These boys will be bringing over 60,000 songs to choose from for all your karaoke desires.

Happy Anniversary, Mile High Jazz Band. Every second Tuesday they play a concert at Comma Coffee, and have for fifteen years. Help them celebrate. Grab your dancing shoes and head to Carson Lanes and learn some country line dancing. Kids won’t want to miss Craft Day at the Carson City Library: all supplies are free and waiting. It’s an evening of illusion at the Brewery Arts Center. Be dazzled and help raise funds for the Carson Middle School Band Program.

TUESDAY:

Sundays can be lazy, but with this list of things to do, they needn’t be. BMX Racing has returned for the season and can be found at the Livermore Sports Complex off Edmonds. Fall down the rabbit hole and find yourself at the Community Center for the matinee of Alice in Wonderland Jr. Check out Children’s Day on the Comstock in Virginia City for food and family fun.

What a wonderful community we live in. Music, theater, hiking, biking, wining, dining, walking, TED-talking, animal loving, state governing, and so much more are available in our valley. The days are getting longer and there is so much in store for us in the coming weeks and months as we journey into summer. Take a good gander at my list of what’s going on in the Carson City area. It is always arranged chronologically by start time.

SATURDAY:

Monday has returned, the kids head back to school, and the weather is gorgeous. Add a dose of beautiful to your day with a visit to an art Gallery. You’ll find a new exhibit in the Main Gallery at Western Nevada College. Carson City officials will be on hand today at the Community Center to answer questions and explain what is on the budget for the upcoming fiscal year. While you’re there, take a good gander at the Great Basin Native Artists show on display in the Sierra Room.

MONDAY:

Mondays aren’t always something special, but a day like this only comes once every four years. Happy Leap Day, everyone. Have a leisurely lunch at Comma Coffee while listening to Dennis on the Piano. Toast the day with a mimosa at Ed’s Doghouse. Raise your glass to for a good cause: Suds for Seniors is raising money for the Meals on Wheels Program. A $15 ticket will get you a sample of five beers at the Feisty Goat Pub or at the Firkin and Fox. Might as well stick around the Firkin for karaoke and some yummy grub.

MONDAY: Leap Day

It’s Monday, Carson City, whether you’re ready for it or not. The sunny days ahead are getting longer, and the clear skies tonight should make for a beautiful view of the full moon. Enjoy something beautiful at one of our many art galleries in town: they rotate often, so there is always something new to see. Check out the whole list for all of today’s options.

Take me out to the ball game, take me out to the crowd. Better yet, take me out for some frozen yogurt at Yogurt Beach where you’ll find a fundraiser and walk-in sign-ups for Carson City Little League. Relay for Life is holding a fundraiser, as well. Head to Buffalo Wild Wings and let them know you’re there for Relay. Round out the Valentine’s Day weekend by singing some love songs: karaoke at Firkin and Fox is always a good time.

It may seem like just another Monday, but today kicks off the Year of the Monkey. Apparently it’s considered unlucky, but only if you were born in the year of the Monkey yourself. This is a year when anything can happen. Spend the day enjoying something beautiful. The Nevada Artist Association Gallery at the Brewery Art Center will be changing its exhibit at the end of the week, so go take a last peek at what’s on display.

MONDAY: Chinese New Year – Year of the Monkey

Welcome back, Wildcats. The 2016 spring semester begins today at Western Nevada College. While you’re wandering around campus, make sure to check out the new exhibit in the Bristlecone building’s Main Gallery. Relax after your first day of classes with a tasting sampler at the Feisty Goat Pub. ‘Suds for Seniors’ is a fundraiser for Meals on Wheels and lets you try five of the draft beers on tap. Enjoy the Monday Night Music Series at Sierra Place Senior Living on West College Parkway. Sandi ‘Pipes’ Medley will be singing some jazz favorites.

It may be a Monday, but the weekend continues for some of you. Take advantage of the day off school by hitting the ice at Arlington Square. Get into the swing of things with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s night out at El Charro Avita. Learn to make homemade chicken soup with the Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon County.

January doesn’t have to be dreary. Just grab a coat and head out the door. Whether you want to rummage through antiques at Carson Mall, make crafts with the kids at the Children’s Museum, or enjoy some live music, you’ll find something to do on the list below.

Brave the chilly January air with an easy walk along the V and T Rail Trail at the north end of town. The weekly walk, sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department, heads to the new MAC center in case of wet weather. Learn more about this crazy weather at Sierra Place Senior Living with a presentation by weather historian Mark McLaughlin. Don't miss the Mile High Jazz Band at Comma Coffee tonight. History lovers will want to head up to Virginia City for a lecture at St. Mary's of the Mountain Catholic Church.

Don't let Monday get you down. Start the week off with some family fun at Carson Lanes Bowling Alley: games are only one dollar all day. For more fun with games, check out Nerdvana in their new location at Airport and Highway 50 East. They host a weekly family game night, in addition to other offerings. Get your fill of chicken wings for a good cause. Buffalo Wild Wings will donate ten percent of your bill if you let them know you love our roller derby girls. Enjoy the Monday Night Music Series at Sierra Place Senior Living: gospel singer Loretta Skinner is this week’s featured performer.

Today is Veterans’ Day: a day to commemorate the men and women of the Armed Forces that have fought, and possibly died, for our country. Thank you for your service. Several places around town are offering something special for our Veterans today: free coffee, free breakfast, free lunch, etc. You’ll need to bring proof of service. Tonight, everyone is invited to the party. Check out the Junebugs at Living the Good Life. The Portland pop-folk band returns for a night of fun and dancing.

It was rainy last night in our valley, but this evening should see some snow. A winter wonderland isn’t always easy to drive in, so please slow down and be careful. Monday always brings karaoke at the Firkin and Fox, so go sing your heart out. Football lovers will probably be watching the Bears-Chargers game. For those of you with swing in your step, head to El Charro Avita for intermediate dance lessons and the High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s weekly ‘night out.’
