My Nevada story began with a family trip through the Silver State

When I was about 12 years old, my family took a trip down along the east side of the Sierra Nevada on our way to Lake Havasu, California, during Spring Break 1986.

All six of us piled into the family Ford Econoline Trail Wagon, brand new at the time, and set out to break in the new set of wheels.

Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'The Lilley,' Northern Nevada's newest Art Museum

On Tuesday, March 26, the Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) will present a public talk, "The Lilley", by the University of Nevada, Reno, curator Paul Baker Prindle.

The event is part of CCAI’s ongoing Nevada Neighbors speakers’ series and will take place at 6pm at the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City.

There will be an informal reception for Baker Prindle preceding the event at 5:30pm. No tickets needed; the public is cordially invited.

Sierra Nevada Ballet welcomes in the Spring Season with the annual production of Brew, Brats and Ballet-A Celebration of choreography on April 6 (7:30 PM) and April 7 (2:00 PM) at the Reno Little Theater and on April 13 (7:00 PM) at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.

This year the BBB presentation features six different choreographers with each one presenting a special short work and a short talk before it. The program culminates with a post performance Q and A session between choreographers and audience.

Carson City Mint 150 lecture, programs featured Saturday

The Nevada State Museum continues its months-long celebration leading up to the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Carson City U.S. Branch Mint with lectures and other special events in March.

Recognizing March is also Women’s History Month, the museum is presenting the lecture “Women Workers of the Carson City U.S. Mint,” as its March “Mint150” event. The museum’s curator of history, Bob Nylen, will present the lecture at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 16.

Carson City Arts Initiative awarded $10,000 grant, part of $90,000 statewide total

The National Endowment for the Arts announced this week that it has awarded grants totaling $90,000 to seven arts organizations and agencies in Nevada for support in projects planned in fiscal year 2019. The Carson City Arts Initiave took home $10,000 for artist talks, art exhibits and more.

Lyon County prepares for possible flash flooding with upcoming storm

RENO, Nev. – Chickadees with better learning and memory skills, needed to find numerous food caches, are more likely to survive their first winter, a long-term study of mountain chickadees has found.

Enhanced spatial cognition and brain power evolves via natural selection, an elaborate study of hundreds of mountain chickadees in the Sierra Nevada has found. Using passive integrative transponder tags in combination with radio frequency identification-equipped feeders, scientists at the University of Nevada, Reno have tracked feeding behaviors and measured learning and memory of these non-migratory birds that live year-round in the high-elevation forest northwest of Truckee, Calif.

What is it? Where did it start? What does it look like in other countries around the world? Why would we want medicare for all in the U.S.? How would we pay for medicare for all? How would it effect our hospitals and doctors? What about our personal health choices?

These and many other questions will be discussed at the free forum on February 12, at the Brewery Arts Performance Hall with doors opening at 5:30 p.m.

More snow in forecast this weekend for Northwestern Nevada, Eastern California

Another round of storms will impact the region this weekend. While snow accumulations aren't expected to rival those from last weekend, disruptions to travel could still be significant.

Beginning Friday afternoon, the first in a series of three storms could bring a 30-60 percent chance of snow to the greater Carson City area after 4 p.m. and again after 10 p.m. However, this system is forecast to be weak and should not leave more than an inch on the valley floors.
