Dear Friends, I wanted to send my very best wishes to each of you for a peaceful and safe Spring Break. During the past three weeks, I have marveled at the professional services and selfless acts of kindness you have delivered during one of the most incredible events of my career.

Despite the challenges assisted living and memory care communities are facing during the novel coronavirus pandemic, the training and certification of team members continue to be a priority not only for communities like Mission Senior Living but also for the state of Nevada, which requires ongoing certification for medical technicians.

A virtual town hall meeting was held Wednesday evening where local leaders spoke about the COVID-19 pandemic, how it affects Carson City and what city departments, schools and Carson Tahoe Hospital are doing to mitigate the issues.

If you know Shanell Cavener, then you are tremendously lucky. If you work with her, or she taught you, then the luck is multiplied tenfold (hopefully this is the right math to use, Shanell?).

Shanell Cavener is this year’s Carson High School Teacher of the Year, and she could not be more deserving of the honor. Shanell is quiet, often working behind the scenes in ways people would not even realize in order to benefit the lives of all who enter CHS.

CARSON CITY — Carson High School is helping seniors participate in what they are calling a virtual nod for prom and prom candidates this weekend. Saturday, April 4, was the previously scheduled evening designated for what many considered a rite-of-passage for high school seniors and a quintessential American tradition that, along with graduation, often symbolizes the end of one chapter in life and the beginning of a new one. With the COVID-19 pandemic, those plans among many others have been canceled.

Stimulus Program Information

The coronavirus relief bill passed March 27 by Congress provides payments to individuals who make less than $100,000 a year. The payment total $1,200 for each adult who makes $75,000 or less, plus $500 per child. The payment amounts decrease if you make between $75,000 and $99,000. The income is determined by your latest tax return filed with the IRS. It will use your 2019 taxes if you have filed them already, or your 2018 taxes if you haven't. Ondra L. Berry, the Adjutant General of the Nevada National Guard who oversees the Nevada Air and Army Guard, has been promoted by the Department of the Air Force to the rank of major general. He will add a second star to his uniform once Gov. Steve Sisolak promotes Berry in a pending promotion ceremony.

The Retail Association of Nevada released Wednesday the results of their statewide survey that measures consumer opinion and buying behaviors as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

“While Nevadans are very concerned of COVID-19, they are generally supportive of how it has been handled to date, giving high marks to the local retailers who have worked tirelessly to keep grocery stores open and as many products available as possible,” said Bryan Wachter, Senior Vice President of Government and Public Affairs of the Retail Association of Nevada.

MINDEN — In response to COVID-19 Douglas County officials continue to work closely with Carson City Health and Human Services and a regional Emergency Operations Center that has been set up in Carson City to ensure compliance with the Governor’s directive while working in partnership to keep Douglas County residents safe.

Carson City Health and Human Services is reporting one new positive case of COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus in the Quad County region: Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, and Storey counties. This brings the total number of cases in the Quad-County region to four.

He is the fearless leader of Carson High School, and he is taking his teachers through uncharted territory in order to guide them into successfully teaching and caring for their students during this time of uncertainty. His name is Gavin Ward, and he is doing a fantastic job as the Principal of CHS, being both available and supportive while encouraging teachers, students, and even parents to engage their students with much-needed health, hope and heterochromatic learning.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic and at the close of the first week since Nevada Gov. Sisolak ordered school sites and non-essential businesses to close, what may not be known to the general public is the governor has identified public schools as an essential service.

School districts across the state have been working feverishly to develop a system of remote teaching and learning. This new method of holding school begins Monday, March 23.

As Governor Steve Sisolak, Nevada state government officials, public health authorities, hospitals, and medical providers all work together to prepare, test, treat, and slow the spread of COVID-19, there are measures we can all take to reduce our risk of contracting the virus and keep our families and communities healthy.

By noon Wednesday, all "non-essential" businesses in Nevada were required to shut down by state decree in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19. However, some local business owners were confused as to the procedure for the shut down, which businesses in fact are required to close and in what ways can they remain open.

In response to the Declaration of Emergency by the Lyon County Board of Commissioners, the Human Services department has reduced the staffing in its' administrative offices. Limited services are being offered over the phone, individuals are encouraged to contact their local Human Services office with any questions or concerns.

YERINGTON — Lyon County has announced the following changes in operations in response to COVID-19 and the Governor’s recent announcement as to the State of Nevada’s Response to COVID-19.

Carson City officials are continuously monitoring the level of risk of COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) to the community. In close coordination with Carson City Health and Human Services, the City Manager’s Office along with City departments in an abundance of caution are coordinating the closure of some offices to take additional measures to slow the spread of respiratory viruses. The Lyon County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a Declaration of Emergency through Resolution 20-05 and a meeting Monday afternoon, according to County Manager Jeff Page.

There was one person who poke against the resolution. Lyon County staff will now begin implementing procedures to address the declaration.

Due to the continuing health and safety concerns surrounding coronavirus (COVID-19), the Carson City Senior Center is closing the Senior Center to the public.

The multi-faith prayer service where Nevada’s faith leaders from various traditions planned to join together on March 15 to pray for God’s mercy concerning worldwide outbreak of coronavirus, its victims and their loved ones, and care providers; has been cancelled due to public health concerns.

According to its coordinators — religious statesman Rajan Zed and senior Greek Orthodox Christian priest Stephen R. Karcher — this unique multi-faith service would be restructured as “Thanks God” service at the same venue once the coronavirus threat is over.

Carson High School senior and Partnership Carson City Community Prevention Coordinator Cruz Bulmer, 19, is spreading the word about the Deterra Drug Deactivation System.

The Nevada Northern Regional Behavioral Health Policy Board elected Taylor Allison, executive director of Partnership Douglas County, as their new chair on Feb. 26.

CARSON CITY — What started in September with a field of more than 4,400 Nevada High School students has been narrowed to the final six who will compete Saturday, March 14, for the title of Nevada Poetry Out Loud Champion.
