Start the day making something beautiful. The Muscle Powered Trash Mob descends upon our new downtown for some clean-up and coffee. Friends to All is dedicated to bringing joy, cheer and friendship to senior citizens in the community during the holiday season. Since 1999 this group has been working to meet the needs of those with limited financial resources who are home bound or in care centers with little or no family nearby. A collaboration of agencies and organizations officially kicked off the 2016 Holiday with a Hero campaign on Wednesday with a goal of giving at least 200 homeless children in Carson City a Christmas experience by providing them gift cards to spend on themselves prior to the holiday.

A month from its inaugural ride, The Polar Express is on its way to selling out with over 50 percent of tickets sold for the 2016 season. Secure tickets now to ensure children have a chance to experience holiday magic firsthand with rides scheduled Nov. 17 – Dec. 23 on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad.

Santa Claus will be visiting DeBug Computer in Carson City on Saturday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. to help bring Christmas cheer to those less fortunate. You'll find Debug in their new location at 1817 N. Stewart St, #30.

This is DeBug’s fourth year putting on an event to help the sheriff’s office with its Holiday with a Hero event, which pairs up Carson City sheriff's deputies, firefighters and public officials with dozens of pre-selected local students, many of whom don't have permanent homes and live in poverty.

Tickets for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad’s wildly popular holiday adventure to the North Pole via The Polar Express train will go on sale starting Friday, Aug. 19 at 6 a.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Weather permitting, the U.S. Forest Service, the Nevada Division of State Lands and the Nevada Division of Forestry may conduct prescribed fire operations next week beginning Monday, May 2, 2016. 

On the East Shore, operations may take place in the Rocky Point area near Tunnel Creek Road, Montreal Canyon near Spooner Summit and south of Glenbrook near Camp Galilee.

Weather permitting, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service plan to continue prescribed fire operations this week with some smoke visible from the valley.
On the East Shore, operations may take place near Spooner Summit, Camp Galilee and on Kingsbury Grade near Edgewood Drive.

The Nevada Division of Forestry, the U.S. Forest Service and California State Parks have continued prescribed fire operations with controlled burning. Residual smoke from the burning has been visible in the valleys. Firefighters from Tahoe Douglas and East Fork Fire Protection District were called Monday afternoon to investigate smoke in the Spooner area and above Jacks Valley and determined it was from the controlled fire operations.

It’s Christmas in March for Tyler Smith, the winner of The Polar Express Ticket Giveaway for tickets to the opening weekend of The Polar Express Train Ride on the historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad this 2016 season.

For the past month V&T conducted surveys for customer feedback about their experience with the railroad. Each survey participant was entered in a giveaway to win four coach tickets to the highly anticipated opening weekend of holiday train, Nov. 17-20.

Santa Claus will be delivering presents tonight to girls and boys throughout the capital city, but unfortunately due to the bad weather, he won’t be guided by Carson City sheriff’s reserve officers.

We love the Christmas season. As we've noted with most cultural traditions, though, Christmas holds different meanings for folks depending on their time, place and circumstances.

UPDATE SATURDAY: The Polar Express is back up and running and will run on its regular rides this weekend through Tuesday night, said Candy Duncan, spokeswoman for the V&T.

UPDATE 11:05PM: All passengers, including Santa Claus and helpers, have been safely removed from the disabled V&T train Friday night and were taken by shuttle buses to the Carson City depot. The train stalled north of Linehan Road in Lyon County. Carson City dispatch received the call at 9:20pm that the train was disabled with more than 240 passengers. There were no injuries and the passengers were in good spirits, said Sgt. Scott McDaniel.
A diesel engine pushed the disabled train and passenger cars back to the Carson City depot.

THURSDAY:

Nearly 240 Carson City school children were treated Wednesday to an early Christmas that was made possible from Santa’s capital city connection of volunteers, contributors and a community that continues to give of itself in cash and time to those who would have otherwise gone without.

It’s a perfect afternoon for a trip around the rink at the Arlington Square Ice Rink. School will be off for winter break next week, and the rink will have expanded hours for the occasion. Warm up inside with country dancing at Carson Lanes. Test your knowledge at Trivia night at Living the Good Life. For cool jazz and yummy food, Sassafras is the place to be tonight.

The deadline is Wednesday for donations to the Toys for Tots drive through the Nevada Department of Public Safety's Capitol Police sponsored by the US Marine Corps Reserves.

Dashing through the snow via a U.S.S. Nevada Burning Man Art Car will be the order of the morning for Santa Claus, a band of elves and anyone who wishes to participate in Saturday's Downtown Carson City Christmas Parade.

For a few hours one day each year, children of all ages are offered the opportunity to immerse themselves in the full spirit of the season, when Cafe at Adele’s hosts Cookies with Santa, a benefit event that combines all the best aspects of good cheer with helping to provide gifts for area children.

Youth Theatre Carson City will feature the upcoming production of "Yes, Virginia: The Musical," an exciting new holiday classic based on the Macy’s and NBC Holiday special of the same name.

"Yes, Virginia: The Musical" has been adapted specifically for children and families by Macy’s, in partnership with the Make-a-Wish Foundation. The show will run two performances, Dec. 19-20, 2015 in the Bob Boldrick Theatre at the Carson City Community Center.

You better watch out, you better not cry, or you may be walking the plank. Santa Claus is coming to town, but he'll be arriving on the U.S.S. Nevada Burning Man Art Car instead of his usual sleigh.
