Carson City Save Mart stores to match customer donations Friday to fight local hunger
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 12/10/2014 - 9:55amThis Friday, Dec. 12, Save Mart will match donations to Ron Wood Family Resource Center, a local Feeding America-affiliated food bank, through their Holiday "Give. Share. Care" program, for a total dollar-for-dollar matching grant of up to $5,000 for the day.
This initiative could not come at a more critical time for local food banks. Already stretched heading into the holiday season, recent cuts to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Food Stamps) significantly dented the food budgets of thousands of local, low-income households.

Donations are welcome. Meanwhile, Carson High School has had a number of their singing Senators recognized for their vocal talents already this year.
Cookies with Santa at Adele’s returns Dec. 13 to benefit Ron Wood Family Resource Center

Children of all ages are invited to enjoy complimentary hot cider, hot chocolate, coffee and cookies, visit with and have their picture taken with Santa, while helping provide Christmas for children in need.
Toys for Tots kick-off in full swing

Marines from the Bridgeport Warfare Center will be at all three Walmart stores in the Carson City and Douglas County area on Friday and Saturday accepting donations. Come out and support our local children. Every child deserves a Happy Holiday.

Friends of Carson City Library host canned food drive

Bring in a donation of canned or packaged food from Sept. 8 through Sept. 13 and pick out a free book of your choice.

'Feds Feed Families' food drive at Carson City Third and Curry Street Farmers Market
Submitted by editor on Thu, 08/07/2014 - 9:31am“Feds Feed Families” a food drive to benefit the hungry in Carson City, will be accepting donations and cleaned produce at the Aug. 9 and again Aug. 16 at the Third and Curry Street Farmer’s Market in Carson City.
Donations will benefit the Ron Wood Family Resource Center, a local food pantry that provides emergency rations for about 425 families each week.
Pam Winebarger, the food bank and volunteer coordinator, said the need in the community is great.
“We are seeing many more families in need, and seniors too, which is sad,” she said.

22nd Annual Letter Carriers Food Drive is Saturday, May 10

Ron Wood center to honor John Hurzel as Community Leader of the Year at Governor's Mansion

John is a long time resident of Carson City and contributes his efforts toward enhancing the lives of many through his culinary talents and selfless generosity. John offers his expertise to youth interested in the culinary arts and has been a supporter of many non-profit organizations with a healthy nutritional focus.
Perception of The Greenhouse Project

Supervisor Abowd is founder and president of TGP and co-owner with her husband Charlie of Adele's Cafe. The e-mail question and response follow.
Carson City restaurant, food and health inspections through April 2

Inspections are through April 2, 2014 and include restaurants, bars and lounges, convenience stores and the Ron Wood Family Resource Center, which scored a AA scores of 100.

Wine Walk, ice skating with Santa Claus on tap today in downtown Carson City

The Carson City Downtown Business Association says that even though it's chilly outside, you can keep warm by bundling up, putting on a pair of skates or walking along the streets of downtown, where you can shop for holiday gifts (there's several gift shops and shopping opportunities throughout downtown) and sip some fine wine at any number of stops.
Sheriff: Body of homeless man found in Carson City may have died from the cold
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 12/05/2013 - 12:27pmUPDATE: The body of a man found this morning in the hill area behind the AM/PM at 4190 South Carson Street likely died of exposure to the cold weather, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene at around 11:25 a.m. after a caller phoned dispatch saying there was a man behind the store who wasn't moving. Foul play isn't suspected, said Furlong. A coroner and detectives were also investigating.
Library is the Place for Holiday Giving

Toys for Tots is ready to help community with hotline beginning Dec. 2

Toys for Tots will be serving children in Carson, Douglas, Storey and Lyon counties. The HOTLINE NUMBER IS 884-TOYS.
Toys for Tots will be kicking off the 2013 campaign with our local Marines at all three Walmart stores on Friday, November 29 and Saturday, November 30.

Carson City Salvation Army in need of 1,400 turkeys to meet demand; turkey roundup this Friday

Agencies such as FISH, Ron Wood, Douglas County Food Bank, Tahoe Community Food Bank, and Washoe Valley Food Bank also receive turkeys from the Salvation Army to help with clients in need. This has been made possible for the past 14 years by Mike’s Pharmacy of Carson City who has planned their 15th annual Turkey Round Up this coming Friday from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m.
