Senator Square: Senior projects and the special effects for everyone involved

The seniors of Carson High School will deliver their Senior Project speeches on April 18. Each student must deliver an 8-12 minute speech in front of 4-5 Carson City Community members, and this is no easy task as, statistically, many fear public speaking more than death.

Carson City teen wins state title at Boys and Girls Clubs Youth of the Year competition

Autumn Cuellar, an 18-year-old Carson High School senior, earned the title of 2016 Nevada State Boys & Girls Clubs Youth of the Year in Las Vegas Thursday, Feb. 18, competing against club members from Las Vegas, Mason Valley, Reno and Elko. Cuellar won the local Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada competition in January.

While we took a break from this column this summer, we still had plenty of CHS students busy with school activities over the break. Thank you to the community for supporting students who participated in national competitions across the United States. The Senators were very well represented this summer.

Storyteller and Musician Karla Huntsman at Dangberg Historic Park

Karla Huntsman will combine the art of storytelling with her talent as a musician, in a performance at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday August 26, at 6:30 pm.

The event is open to the public and free to attend.

Making meaning through story and theater activities has been Karla Huntsman’s life work. Huntsman believes in the power of storytelling to infuse life, joy, connection with self, and connection with others no matter the age of the listener. She sings, plays guitar, autoharp, washboard and djembe drum as part of her storytelling performances.

Carson City man breaks record with 50 hour speech, raises $25,000 for youth soccer

A Carson City man broke a world record Saturday morning for continuous public speaking and raised $25,000 for a youth soccer program.

Ian Hill finished at 8 a.m., some 50 hours from the time he began speaking Thursday morning at the Brewery Arts Center. With his voice raspy, and obviously showing signs of exhaustion, Hill was grateful for the contributions made from Carson City and across the country.

More than 36 hours into his attempt to break the Guinness World Record for longest public speaking session, Ian Hill was showing signs of fatigue early Friday evening. But, still, he pressed on.

“I think it’s very cool he’s doing this for us,” said Karalee Ward, 9. “He’s trying to show us anything can happen.”

Entering into his 10th hour of nonstop speaking, Ian Hill said he was feeling fine. “It’s amazing that after nine-and-a-half hours, I still have all this energy,” he said.

The business leader and international motivational speaker began talking 6 a.m. Thursday at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City and will continue through Saturday morning in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for longest public speaking event.

What Works: Take Three Steps and Stand Up to Fear

I speak a lot about fear and how it can hold you back. This morning, I want to flip it a bit. Because, when you Face Everything and Rise, fear can actually be a good thing. First of all, your body is incapable of lying. Butterflies in the stomach, headaches, even body pains can tell you when something is going on.

These bodily responses can be used like a GPS though, to tell you what’s really going on inside you. It can tell you when fear is approaching. I challenge you, at least once this week, to stand your ground.

Senator Square: CHS seniors to visit Nevada State Legislature

All Carson High School seniors will be visiting the Nevada State Legislature during one of their government classes these next two weeks. This is a memorable and relevant experience for our senior class and a key component of their civics education. The field trip will be contained within the government class period.

Hypnotist Chris Cady’s Comedy Hypnosis Show At JA Nugget Hotel and Casino

In celebration of Valentine’s Day, Saturday February 14, 2015 at 8 p.m. Comedy Hypnotist Chris Cady, will perform one show at, JA Nugget Hotel and Casino in Sparks. His show is called, “Chris Cady’s Hypnotize Your Valentine Comedy Hypnosis Show.”

The hilarious comedy hypnosis show is an adults only, outrageous, “naughty” comedy hypnosis show where audience members can volunteer to get hypnotized by Master Hypnotist Chris Cady and become the stars of the show. The volunteers then engage in some of the most outrageous antics ever seen on stage by everyday people.

Registration open as Poetry Out Loud celebrates 10th Anniversary

The 2014-2015 school year marks the 10th anniversary of the Poetry Out Loud program. Since 2005, more than 16,000 students throughout Nevada have powered up poetry by memorizing and reciting the words of classic and contemporary poets. Students can be a part of this creative community and join the celebration of the spoken word.

Kit Carson Toastmasters Wins Area Speech Contests

Jim Klipp of Kit Carson Toastmasters in Carson City took top honors at both the International Speech Contest and the Table Topics Contest at the Area Level on March 8.

The International Speech Contests challenges each contestant to present their best five to seven minute speech. Each of the local clubs may select a representative to compete with the winner advancing to the next level. The finals will be held this year in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

For the past 55 years the Kit Carson Toastmasters Club has been a part of the world leading organization that is Toastmasters International, an organization that has helped millions develop their communication and leadership skills through a hands on, mutually supportive and constructive feedback program.
