Sassafras re-opens at Hot Springs Road location
Submitted by editor on Wed, 01/28/2015 - 10:40pmWhile many were looking at South Tahoe Wednesday night and a grand opening of the Hard Rock Casino, there was a Carson City opening noteworthy of its own with Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint, re-locating to 1500 Old Hot Springs Road.
As many in Carson City know, the Sassafras in downtown was not only very popular among local foodies, artists and musicians but its following crossed other boundaries, too, from doctors, nurses, deputies and firefighters to old school conservative politicians and progressive lawmakers.
Michele Fiore: I have been libeled but I won't say how and have yet to sue
Submitted by admin on Mon, 01/12/2015 - 1:11pm"Libelous personal attacks shouldn’t be part of politics"
That's the headline on a piece that the Las Vegas Review-Journal published today by Assemblywoman Michele Fiore. I assume the RJ doesn't let its "special" contributors write their own headlines, so the use of the word "libelous" by a news org...
Ralston Reports: What lies ahead for Nevada politics
Submitted by editor on Sat, 01/10/2015 - 9:00amThe rack surely was agonizing. Drawing and quartering sounds gruesome. Waterboarding must be unbearable.
But do they really compare to the pain of a pundit offering up his yearly predictions for shame and ridicule? I don't think so.

The 2014 Democrat Crack-Up
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sat, 12/06/2014 - 4:05pmThe trouncing Democrats took in November’s elections has opened fissures between their liberal wing, represented by New York Senator Charles Schumer, and their progressive wing, led by President Barack Obama.
Standing uneasily with a foot in each camp is Hillary Clinton. The tiff concerns Obamacare, and 20 years ago, she authored its forerunner, Hillarycare. Having lost both houses of Congress, the party of government (and Hillary) in 2016 may also lose the Presidency if it lacks a compelling message.
Romney at Politics 33 1/3
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 12/04/2014 - 5:38pmThe delightfully great and fresh gossip from a New York Fundraiser that Mitt Romney may yet try again to be our lected president delights every Democrat with their thinking cap on. Mr. Romney ran a weak kneed campaign a couple years ago-but at least he picked a better running mate than Senator McCain-(remember Sarah Palin-the glib attractive charmer who could not answer that very tough question: "what do you like to read?"
Ira Hansen to step down as speaker of Nevada Assembly; says he's a victim, blames the media
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sun, 11/23/2014 - 1:16pmAssemblyman Ira Hansen, R-Sparks, will step down as the GOP's choice for speaker of the Nevada Assembly. Hansen made the announcement in an statement sent to the Republican Assembly caucus that was made public Sunday. He blamed the media and the "powers that be" as prompting his resignation in which he said he has become a victim and target of "character assassination."
In recent days several columns he had written over the years for the Sparks Tribune and comments he made on KOH radio were again brought to light, where Hansen blasted blacks, women in the military, Jews and gays.
Is Ron Knecht rewriting history?
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 11/12/2014 - 6:20pmIn a Nevada Appeal op-ed, Controller-elect Ron Knecht laid out the premise for his ultra-conservative world view as follows:
"For 125 years, we’ve seen the rise of the dysfunctional politics of Progressivism. As it
has accelerated in the last five decades, we’ve had slowing economic growth and reductions in individual liberty, prosperity, opportunity and hope."

Thank you for proving my point, over and over again
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Fri, 11/07/2014 - 8:18amThere really is nothing more to be said. The only argument a "Democrat" can offer in the name of "being open to new ideas" is either pure marxism or just the same plain old politics of personal destruction.
Here is an idea that that I am sure is "new" to guys like this:
The US Constitution, Article 1, Section 8.
Amendments 1-10.
The Federalist and Anti-Federalist Papers.
Reply to Peter Hennessey
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 11/03/2014 - 8:57pmPeter Hennessey seems to have trouble with the word Democratic. Sadly he's not alone in that. It's an affliction that's been going around on the extreme right since the days of Joseph McCarthy. Please note that I'm talking about the extreme right, not the Republican party of the past, which once had a perfectly sane and civic-minded mainstream. I was a registered Republican myself for 34 years, but never had any trouble understanding that Democrat is a noun and Democratic is an adjective. I only have a bachelor's degree, but have no trouble distinguishing between nouns and adjectives.
Campaign follies; What's a poor voter to do?
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 10/28/2014 - 3:29pmCampaign follies? campaign ethics? WHAT campaign ethics?
We just shrug our shoulders, "that's politics; politicians lie." We chortle at the more outrageous excesses. The bigger the whopper, the more we are entertained. But alas, they keep doing it because it works.

Ballot Questions 1, 2, 3
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Fri, 10/17/2014 - 10:35amBallot Question 1, creating a Court of Appeals
The problem is that the Nevada Supreme Court is overwhelmed by appeals. But the proposed fix, detailed in Senate Bill 463 (2013), does not address the fact that the Court has no authority to decide which cases it will hear. Instead, Nevada must be just like everybody else, a “government of, by and for lawyers.”
Both problems have a simple, quintessentially conservative solution, proposed by Gary Schmidt, recently a candidate for State Senator from district 16 -- Tort Reform:
On Abortion...A Classical Conservative Speaks...Finally!
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 10/14/2014 - 11:16amClassical conservatives find the issue of abortion not only disturbing when confronted by the fundamentalist or the evangelical sect of the modern conservative movement on this issue, but also confused and shocked by the self-refuting logic of their entrenched stand.

Tesla Freebies
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 09/10/2014 - 7:13amThe choice in the Tesla deal is not between socking the corporation with higher or lower taxes; the choice is between getting nothing from them if the don't come, or getting all the increased sales tax revenue as their employees spend their money HERE. THAT is a win for everybody.
But conventional thinking always degenerates into the predatory socialist politics of greed, and sees everything only in terms of windfalls, favors or corruption. What's the loot, who gets what, who wins, who loses.

On Myths and Fairy Tales: The Sad State of Political Knowledge
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Fri, 07/25/2014 - 5:50amRecently, right here in Carson City, I was asked to sign a “Petition to Impeach President Obama”. I was told to “impeach” meant to remove a sitting President from office and that by merely signing this petition, President Obama and his wife Michelle, would be leaving the White House because “the people have spoken.”
