Memorial Day season is a great time to honor our military, thank our brave veterans and public servants — and help save the life of a homeless pet at Nevada Humane Society.

After all, summer is starting and a new furry friend could become your constant companion, cuddle buddy and fellow couch potato while you avoid the hot summer heat.

Here’s an events lineup of what's happening around the Carson City region for the 2019 Memorial Day weekend. More events will be added as information becomes available.

Everyone, say hello to Steve! Steve is a 9 month old terrier mix pup, who is looking for a new family to call his own.

Say hello to Nancy! Nancy is a mature, refined little lady who is looking for her forever home.

She is a 10-year-old Chihuahua mix, and has been waiting to find her new family since early April. She needs someone who will be patient until she feels trusting enough to show her personality.

From leaving the house for showings and open houses to having to keep the place spotless at all times, having a home on the market can be a nerve-wracking endeavor. Once you’ve made the decision to sell, you want to know that you won’t be in this anxiety-filled limbo forever. You want to hand over those keys, collect your check and move on — literally!

So, without lowering your asking price, what can you do to sell your home in a hurry? The following are 11 strategies that will help your property sell quickly without your wallet taking a heavy hit.

1. Declutter.

My friend Marie was told recently it was illegal to harvest rainwater in Nevada. She was referring to putting large barrels under gutter downspouts to catch and store water running off a roof. Many people have done this for years, but actually it was illegal in Nevada until 2017.

Headed into Saturday, April 27, 2019 we're looking at another picture-perfect spring weather day and cool overnight temperatures. There's lots of activities ahead, including a colorful fun run at Mills Park, a free paper and document recycling event hosted by Debug Computer, a prescription drug roundup, the Silver State's own celebration of the Aloha State, a Carson High School speech team fundraiser at Flavors of India, art showings and sales and a fundraiser at Flat Earth Pizza for a wonderful Carson City woman who is in the throes of cancer. Help protect each other and our water supply by properly disposing of your unused or expired prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, prescription liquids, pet medications and syringes.

As part of the federal Drug Roundup initiative, Partnership Carson City will set up drug roundup stations 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 27, in front of both Save Mart Supermarkets, 3620 N. Carson and 4348 S. Carson streets; Smith’s Food & Drug Store, 559 E. William St.; and FoodMaxx, 3325 Highway 50 East.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will begin to open recreational facilities in the Lake Tahoe Basin beginning this Saturday, April 27 at Baldwin and Nevada beaches.

Everyone, say hello to Heather. Heather is 8 years old and has had an interesting life. She's been waiting in foster care since 2017, and she's ready to find her forever home and live out the rest of her life with someone who will give her the love and kindness she deserves.

Say hello to Carson City's Pet of the Week, Wiggs! It can be said that Wiggs is a wagger as well as being a 10-month-old teenager who is ready to meet his new family.

Bug and Cheese-It are a pair of inseparable 7-month-old boys, and get along with just about everyone! Dogs, cats, kids, you name it!

They're looking for a fur-ever home together, and have been waiting for you to come and take them home since March.

In order to prepare, it’s time for the annual Kitten Shower, being held on Saturday, April 6, at Nevada Humane Society in Reno and Carson City.

The fun-filled event aims to educate people about orphaned kittens in shelters, provide gifts for kittens, and enhance the group of Foster Caregivers — the volunteers who offer temporary homes to underage kittens and puppies.

Happy Saturday Carson City! Today we have the Flying Pig Indoor Flea Market at Fuji Park, the “Spring has Sprung” Art Show, rummage sales, and more! We’ll be looking at a day full of spring showers and gentle breezes, with a high of 49 degrees and a low of 25.

The Carson City Leisure Hour Club recently donated $500 to the Carson Animal Services Initiative (CASI). Lisa Schuette, chair and founding member of CASI, accepted the donation at the March 20 meeting of the Club.

Say hello to Brockie! Just look at that face! He desperately wants to meet you, his new family! Brockie is turning five in just a few days, and is currently up for adoption at the Carson City Humane Society.

On Jan. 30, the Carson City Planning Committee decided to approve a Special Use Permit for an extended stay RV park on property zoned Tourist Commercial located at 1400 Old Hot Springs Road. The maximum stay would be 180 days.

However, an appeal has been made to the Board of Supervisor's by a nearby property owner asking to revoke the Special Use Permit.

Say hello to Snickers! Could he be the one for you? Snickers is a six-year-old short coat Chihuahua mix, and he is looking for his new fur-ever home. He is currently up for adoption through the Nevada Humane Society, located at the Carson City branch.

Carson City area Girl Scout Troop 105 has a passion for animals and decided there would be no better way to earn their Bronze Award than making catnip toys for the local Nevada Humane Society animal shelter.

Sergio Trejo Jr., a Las Vegas native and first-generation college graduate, visited several Carson City schools recently to share his inspiring story about his admittance to medical school. Trejo presented to more than 150 students.
