Nevada's namesake battleship celebrates 100 years
Submitted by editor on Sat, 07/12/2014 - 12:39pmOne hundred years to the day after the battleship USS Nevada was christened, the state for which it was named paid tribute one more time.
Under a cloudy sky in Carson City, a crowd of more than 100 watched as dignitaries unveiled a new plaque at the USS Nevada Memorial listing the names of those sailors killed during the bombing at Pearl Harbor, the ship's battle stars and its Medal of Honor and Navy Cross recipients.

A reception honoring the battleship USS Nevada and her fallen crew will follow in Old Assembly Chambers.

Twenty-five-year old Navy sailor, Roland Peachee, died that day Pearl Harbor was attacked. At least, that’s what his foster parents thought for 42 years, until he showed up on their doorstep.

The film will be shown at the BRIC, 109 E. Proctor Street in downtown Carson City. The film will begin at 11:00 a.m. (just before the Wine Walk).
Halsey Saddle Returns to Nevada
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 12/17/2012 - 4:51pmA Western saddle handcrafted by Reno residents in 1945 was sent as a special gift to Admiral William Halsey to mark the surrender of Japanese forces in World War II. The Halsey Saddle arrives Thursday from the U.S. Naval Academy Museum in Annapolis, MD, on a three-year loan. Gov. Brian Sandoval is scheduled to take delivery. The saddle that gained international attention during the war will be housed at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City in honor of the state’s 150th birthday coming up in 2014 and will tour the state.

Carson City Navy League Veteran's Day Dinner

The social hour is at 5:30PM, followed by a buffet dinner at 6:30PM. We will be celebrating Veteran's Day and honoring Veteran's from all Services. Also, we will honor Pearl Harbor Survivors. Speaker for the evening will be Rear Admidral Mark Vance, Commander, Naval Stride and Air Warfare Center (Top Gun).

Born on the Fourth of July: Veteran remembers service
Submitted by Karel on Wed, 07/04/2012 - 8:38amWilbur Lane came into the world July 4, 1921 and is one of a handful of remaining World War II veterans who served on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, which entered the war Dec.7, 1941 when her planes found the Japanese squadrons attacking Pearl Harbor.
“It was the most decorated ship of WWII, called The Galloping Ghost because (the Japanese) couldn’t find us,” Lane said from his home in Dayton. “Every time they bombed us, they’d announce it on the radio in Japan.”

Movie Review: 'Captain America' takes on the bad guys

And while it does live up to its pulp ancestry with lots of action and fantasy, it reportedly is a 124-minute promotional effort for a film to come, "The Avengers," all four heroes joining to save the world or do other good deeds.

Women's history: Heroes on the Home Front
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sun, 03/27/2011 - 2:57pmNorth Platte, Nebraska is just west of the North Platte and South Platte rivers confluence forming the Platte. North Platte was formed in 1866 with the construction of the continental railroad. In 1941 the population was 12,000.
A couple of weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the women of North Platte heard a troop train with Nebraska National Guard troops would be passing through town. Several of the women decided to bake cookies to give to “our boys” when the train stopped for 10 minutes.
