State museums in Nevada offer free admission for active-duty military families

CARSON CITY — Nevada’s state museums are once again taking part in the national Blue Star Museums program, providing free admission to active-duty military personnel and their families.

The National Endowment for the Arts and Blue Star Families program, now in its 10th year, launched the 2019 program on Saturday, May 18 – Armed Forces Day – and it will stay in effect through the Labor Day Weekend.

Las Vegas senior is Nevada Poetry Out Loud champion

CARSON CITY — Vanessa Aponte, a senior at Legacy High School in Las Vegas, is the 2019 Nevada State champion of Poetry Out Loud. The statewide competition for high school students started in the fall with more than 3,500 participants and narrowed to nine regional finalists for Saturday’s championships at the studios of KNPB Channel 5 Public Broadcasting in Reno.

CARSON CITY — Reno artist Kate O’Hara need only to open her door and look to the mountains to find inspiration for her creations.

O’Hara’s exhibit, “Botanica Obscura,” can be seen for the next three weeks at the Nevada Arts Council’s Legislative eXhibition Series (LXS) inside the Nevada Legislative Building in Carson City. Throughout the 2019 Legislative session, the works of six Nevada artists is being featured. O’Hara is the second of the six artists and her display will remain in place through March 15.

Nevada State museums launch pilot school transportation reimbursement program

CARSON CITY — The sight of school buses outside Nevada’s seven State museums has become less common in the years since the Great Recession hit in 2007 as school districts dealing with tight budgets cut spending on field trips and their related transportation costs.

Both Nevada State Museums in Carson City will celebrate Nevada Day with free admission on Friday, Oct. 28 — the observed holiday — as well as on Saturday, Oct. 29, the day of the Nevada Day Parade along Carson Street in downtown Carson City.

1,000 Ounce silver ingot for NV150 coins now on display at Nevada State Museum

A 1,000 ounce bar of silver mined from 4,000 tons of Nevada ore is a rarity by far, but visitors to the Nevada State Museum in Carson City can catch a glimpse of the spectacular ingot now on display in preparation for the state’s 150th birthday party.

Site of the historic U.S. Mint, the museum still operates the original Coin Press No. 1 on the last Friday of each month. When the bar is melted into 1000 1-ounce round medallions, the celebrated press will stamp commemorative editions, with the “CC” mint mark, honoring the state’s sesquicentennial which is Nevada Day, 2014.
