CARSON CITY, NV – Gov. Brian Sandoval announced Tuesday that U.S. 95 south of Fallon will be closed this Thursday, March 9 through Friday, March 17 as the Nevada Department of Transportation installs additional drainage culverts to help protect the roadway during monumental local flood mitigation efforts.

Brief overnight road and lane closures will take place on South Carson Street and U.S. 50 near Spooner junction March 7-9 for freeway signage installation as part of the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) Carson City freeway project.

A light layer of snow fell in the Carson City area overnight, resulting in potentially hazardous road conditions for the Monday morning commute, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said.

Rain turned to snow Tuesday and overnight temperatures dropped to below freezing, resulting in potentially slippery roads for the Wednesday morning commute.

Motorists are advised to watch for areas of black ice on the highways and roadways in and around Carson City.

CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Nevada Department of Transportation’s dedicated bridge inspection and rehabilitation program has helped Nevada bridges to be named the nation’s best for the fourth consecutive year.

UPDATE 12:40AM: Road crews from California and Nevada announced late Tuesday that both sections of Highway 50 are open after rock and mud slides closed parts of the highway down last week. The latest is Highway 50 west of South Lake Tahoe which is now open, according to CalTrans. The road reopened at 10:32 p.m. Tuesday night, where it had been closed from Pollock Pines to Strawberry due to multiple mudslides.

Highway 50 connecting Carson City to Stateline and south shore Lake Tahoe has reopened as of Tuesday night. The Nevada Department of Transportation announced the highway has open lanes in each direction north of the Cave Rock tunnel.

While there is no estimated time of reopening the roadway, the Nevada Department of Transportation continues to make progress removing monolithic-size boulders which fell onto U.S. 50 north of the Cave Rock area of Lake Tahoe.

The Carson River in and around Carson City could reach major flooding levels by early Saturday morning, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno forecasts.

As of 4:15 a.m. Friday morning, the river in Carson City was measured at 9.2 feet, reaching flood stage when it crests at 10 feet.

The NWS forecasts the Carson River is expected to rise above 11 feet by Saturday, staging the river at major flood levels for the second time in a month.

For safety, the Nevada Department of Transportation has temporarily closed U.S. 50 in the Cave Rock area of Lake Tahoe following five large boulders which have fallen onto the roadway.

UPDATE 1:40PM: The Nevada Department of Transportation has removed the large boulder that fell this morning, blocking one eastbound lane of U.S. 50 in Lake Tahoe. No vehicles were involved in the slide, and no injuries were reported.

The Nevada Department of Transportation has reached a milestone 50 percent completion of construction of the USA Parkway extension connecting Interstate 80 and U.S. 50 in Storey and Lyon counties.

There are currently no controls on roads and highways at lower elevations in Northwestern Nevada, including Interstate 580, U.S. Highway 395, Old 395 Alternate through the Washoe Valley and U.S. Highway 50 East from Carson City, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT).

Commuters coming into or going out of Carson City Monday morning can expect hazardous driving conditions on roads and highways in town and surrounding areas with packed snow and ice.

Motorists are advised to give themselves extra time to reach their destinations.
