Nevada Day Parade

Six lucky people will have a chance to ride in the famous Wells Fargo Stagecoach in this year's Nevada Day Parade in October.
The Carson City Chamber, Wells Fargo Bank, and Advocates to End Domestic Violence have teamed together to offer the memorable Nevada Day experience for six lucky persons who purchase a $5 raffle ticket to ride in the Wells Fargo stagecoach this Nevada Day, Oct. 27. Proceeds of the raffle will go to support the programs of the Advocates.

The Bike Habitat is hosting two events this month.  First up is a Women’s Bike Maintenance Clinic on Tuesday evening September 25th at 6:30pm. The clinic is FREE!! During the Clinic you will learn to fix a flat, perform a safety check, lube your chain and much more.  Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

The Carson City Democratic Women's Club will be holding it's monthly meeting at Grandma Hatties Restaurant Some candidates may be present to discuss their views on the issues. We will also have updates on the Club's Float for the Nevada Day Parade and a review of the RAP (Rising Above Partnership) first forum on the Affordable Health Care Act as well as plans for future Forums. Dozens of protesters wore white T-shirts emblazoned with "99%" to protest what they see as economic injustice on a world level. They did not disturb any of the Nevada Day festivities.

Due to celebrations for Nevada Day, the following road closures are expected for Saturday, October 29:

· Carson Street between Winnie Lane and Stewart Street and Stewart Street from its southern end to Little Lane will be closed beginning at 6:30 a.m. and will reopen at approximately 3:00 p.m. following the completion of the Nevada Day parade.

· Side streets along Carson Street between William Street and Winnie Lane will be closed for parade staging in the morning.

· Curry Street will be closed between Robinson and Musser Streets from 6:30 a.m. until 11:00 p.m.

Why all the fuss about Nevada's birthday on October 31? The battle lines were drawn between "traditionalists", and the "grinches" who would steal Nevada Day by calling for the last Friday of October to be the state's official holiday. The parade and other festivities would follow on Saturday; thus making for a three-day weekend for some Nevadans as well as state and local government employees. With the passage of AB396 by the 1997 legislature, Nevada voters, on November 3, 1998 advised the 1999 legislature they wanted to celebrate Nevada Day on the last Friday in October beginning in 2000. The legislature, after much heated debate, complied.

It only takes four days to celebrate statehood in Nevada. The Silver State knows how to party! The annual Carson City Nevada Day events will observe the 147th year since joining the union, with the theme, “Nevada's Great Outdoors,” Oct. 27-30, 2011.

A four-day celebration of the Silver State's admission to the Union in 1864 will be celebrated the last weekend in October in Nevada's state capitol of Carson City.

The producers of the LIVE Webcast of the 2011 Nevada Day Parade, We Shoot Video, will hold a meeting for the volunteer cast, crew, & other helpers beginning Monday, September 19th. at 7pm at the Media Center in the basement of the Performance Hall at the Brewery Arts Center at 511 W. King Street, Carson City.

This is the 3rd annual Webcast of the parade on the internet. Keith Barnett, owner of We Shoot Video, a Carson City based production company loves to share the only statehood celebration in the country with the world. Come help him realize his dream.

I'm not sure I've seen a better close-up example of a campaign attack backfiring than I did last night in the Assembly District 40 race.

Robin Williamson seemed to be doing everything right to fill the seat held by fellow Democrat Bonnie Parnell. She was working very hard, walking the neighborhoods, working with both Democrats and Republicans to gather the coalition she needed to win in this GOP-leaning district.

And then the Nevada Democratic Party stepped in and screwed it up.

The Nevada Day Parade in downtown Carson City drew tens of thousands to Carson Street today to watch and celebrate the Silver State's statehood.
Parade-goers were treated this morning with an air show above the Carson City skies, including the traditional F18 Hornet fly-over.

Nevada Day kicks off this morning with annual the Nevada Day Parade, with the theme being "100 Years of Aviation" to go along with the Silver State’s admission to the Union in 1864.

Retired Lt. Col. Dick Rutan of the U.S. Air Force serves as Grand Marshal for today's celebration. He was picked to coincide with the theme, which marks a history-making flight of daredevil pilot William Ivy Baldwin west of Carson City, where he soared to 4,675 feet, the highest ever at that time.
 

Monday morning's Carson City commute may bring with it some debris-dodging following Sunday's wind and rain storm. The Carson City Public Works Department will have no doubt worked throughout the night clearing the streets. Give 'em a wave for their efforts if you see them on the streets.
