CARSON CITY — When American troops hit the battlefields of Europe 100 years ago, they had to learn how to fight a new kind of war. From trench warfare to technical advances in weaponry, this was much different fighting than Americans had experienced before.

Tuesdays are happening in Carson City. Tonight, the Mile High Jazz Band takes to the stage at Living the Good Life for their monthly performance. Take advantage of the new program at the Nevada State Library and Archives: once a month, you’re welcome to bring a lunch and listen to a presentation. Celebrate the newest exhibit in the OXS Gallery inside the Nevada Arts Council.

CARSON CITY — With a theme "The NexGen of Aviation is You" the 2018 Carson City Airport Open House looks to the skies to celebrate the future this Saturday, June 23. The free community, family-friendly event draws thousands of visitors annually, where airplane and aircraft enthusiasts gather to learn about aviation and aerospace related careers.

There was plenty of patriotism on display in the capital city Thursday. The Nevada National Guard Hosted its 20th Annual Flag Day and U.S. Army's 243rd Birthday Celebration in Carson City.

She’s a grand ole flag, and there will be two ceremonies to recognize the stars and stripes in Carson City today. At 10 a.m. you can join the Nevada National Guard at the Veterans Memorial on the Capitol Grounds for presentation of the colors, speakers, and even cake for the US Army’s anniversary. You’ll find the Elks Club honoring our flag at 3 p.m. The public are invited to both events. The Army isn’t the only birthday you’ll find today; Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery celebrates its seventh year with an artist reception and new work from Denise Jenkins.

If you didn’t take advantage of early voting, then today is the day to cast that Primary ballot. The local library can be your best friend during summer vacation; Carson City celebrated the kick-off to their summer program on Sunday, while the library in Minden will host a party this evening to get the summer events started. The State Library and Archives have started a new lunchtime program. Join them for Archives Appetizer, a monthly speaker program that will cover different topics of Nevada History. Muscle Powered features two guided hikes on Tuesdays.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada National Guard is set to host its 20th annual Flag Day and U.S. Army’s 243rd birthday celebration 10 a.m. June 14 at the Nevada Veterans Memorial on Capitol grounds, 101 N. Carson St.

Family, friends and fellow veterans gathered this Memorial Day at Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City to pay respect by honoring buried veterans and fallen military.

It’s going to be a chili weekend, and that has nothing to do with the weather. The annual Chili on the Comstock Competition takes over the tiny town of Virginia City, including a saloon crawl Saturday and the hilarious ‘Fun with the Runs’ 5K. Families will have a hard time choosing between the Cops and Kids Open House and Safety Fair at the Sheriff’s Office and the ‘Kids to Parks’ Day activities at Silver Saddle Ranch. It’s Bike Month in Carson City, and the ladies’ Tuesday bike ride up Ash Canyon has returned for the season. You’ll need a helmet and a trail-ready bike if you’d like to join in. A hike up Goni Road with Muscle Powered will be worth the views and a good work-out. Hundreds gathered on the grounds of the Nevada Capitol mall Thursday afternoon at the site of the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial for an annual tribute to fallen peace officers in the state.

I hope you got your fill of sunshine yesterday because we have got some cloudy days on the horizon. Luckily, there are enough things going on to keep you distracted, and inside away from the rain. Jazz and Poetry, courtesy of the Mile High Jazz Band, takes place tonight at Comma Coffee, with the lovely June Joplin on vocals. Trade a pint for a pint.

CARSON CITY — District Attorney Jason Woodbury filed for re-election Tuesday at the Carson City Courthouse. Woodbury won the office in 2014, and is serving the final year of his first term.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada National Guard’s adjutant general, Brig. Gen. William Burks, was in the Nevada Guard’s State Partnership Program delegation in Tonga during Tropical Cyclone Gita on Monday. The entire delegation is accounted for and no injuries are reported.

TUESDAY, Jan 9: Things to do in Carson City

The 14th annual Holiday With a Hero campaign culminated Wednesday in Carson City at Walmart after months of fundraising. At least 240 homeless children from across the Carson City School District met with Santa Claus before being paired with first responder heroes for a Christmas shopping spree.

Santa comes in all shapes, sizes, and apparently, vehicles. Hop aboard the Santa Train at the Nevada Railroad Museum. It’s an out-of-this-world Alien Santa at the annual Zen Christmas at A to Zen. A cookie-loving Santa can be found at Adele’s during their annual toy drive for the Ron Wood Resource Center. If your ‘kids’ are the four-legged kind, then head over to PetSmart or Paws to Pur-fection Dog Grooming for your holiday photos. In addition to the Santa-mania, you’ll find a downtown Carson Beer Crawl, two plays at the Brewery Arts Center, and plenty of music.

I’m always surprised at how busy Tuesdays can get around here. Every week you can discover a new trail with Muscle Powered, get your boot-scootin’ boogie on at Carson Lanes, or test your trivia knowledge at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint and at the Fox Brewpub. Today, however, you can also enjoy the monthly Mile High Jazz Band gig at Comma Coffee, with a special serving of poetry. Christmas Beers are on tap at Cowboy Liquors for their weekly tasting event.

Wreath's Across America is coming to Carson City's Lone Mountain Cemetery thanks to the Carson City Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol which is organizing the event locally. Each December, the national non-profit organization coordinates wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as more than 1,200 locations across the U.S., at sea and abroad.

CARSON CITY — As the Nevada National Guard prepares to enter 2018, a look back on the Silver State’s past year reveals an unprecedented request for domestic response activations, not just in Nevada and northern California, but also places around the nation, ranging from Oregon to Puerto Rico.

Carmen Rank, federal contractor to the Skyline Transition Assistance Advisor Program, is most recently known for her work in connecting all Nevada National Guard and reserve members to resources as well as benefits earned through military service.

The Nevada Army National Guard landed a CH47F Chinook helicopter on the main lawn at Eagle Valley Middle School in Carson City on Tuesday.
