Bike Month is only a third of the way through, but Bike Week in Carson City is coming to a close. For those taking their bike to work today, Comma Coffee and LA Bakery are offering a cup of joe on your way. Pedal your way to the Max Casino for the Grand Opening of the Black Bear Diner; you’re going to need your strength to get through this day full of fun stuff to do. The Nevada State Fair is in full swing and a street dance at the Pavilion starts at 6 p.m.

Thursday is something to celebrate. The long-awaited Nevada State Fair kicks off in Mills Park with a ribbon cutting by Governor Sandoval. Grab the kids, your friends, and family and enjoy carnival rides, county exhibits, civil war reenactments and much more. Our neighbors to the south are celebrating, too: the 106th Annual Carson Valley Days is this weekend. If you’re looking for something quieter, the lecture on the Civil War at the Gold Hill Hotel or an author’s talk on the Ghost Railroads of Central Nevada at the Nevada State Railroad Museum might be a better bet.

Huge congratulations go out the graduating class of Western Nevada College. Head to the Mills Park Pavilion to witness your favorite Wildcat get their diploma. For an update on the downtown construction progress, head to Alatte inside the Carson Nugget for a Q&A with Q&D and Public Works. Go searching for ghosts at the Gold Hill Hotel. Get your boogie on with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club at El Charro Avita.

Rockabilly car show coming to Carson City in June

More than 550 rat rod cars are expected for Rockabilly Riot’s debut event in Carson City this June, tourism officials confirmed Tuesday.

“This is a four-day party wrapped around a car show and celebrating a culture,” said Joel Dunn, executive director of the Carson City Visitors Bureau.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada is pleased to announce the return of their annual fundraiser, “Annual Auction and BBQ Luau” scheduled for Sunday at the Marv Teixeira Pavilion at Mills Park in Carson City. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada.

Hold on to your hats, Carson City, summer isn’t ready to quit us just yet. An aviation air show at the Minden Airport, the coin show and fair at the Nevada State Museum, and a fishing derby for the kids at Little Washoe Lake are only the tip of the iceberg. The Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the annual Carson High Football Boosters Fundraising BBQ. The Quicksilver Dog Agility Trials are always fun to watch, and they’ll be at Fuji Park all weekend. Carson Lanes has family fun indoors and out all day long during their Bowling Blast-off.

CHS Football Boosters Host Annual Kick-Off Fundraiser

Local non-profit, CHS Football Boosters will hold its annual Kick-Off and Hall of Fame Dinner on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at the Marv Teixeira Pavilion at Mills Park. Early check in is encouraged at 5:30 pm.

The event begins at 6 p.m. and will be an evening of great food (provided by Carson BBQ), music, silent auction and raffle as well as an induction ceremony for several former Carson High School Football greats into the Carson High Hall of Fame.

Cloudy days need a little color. I suggest one of the many art exhibits throughout town. The LXS Gallery in the Legislature is welcoming new artwork from Su Limbert entitled ‘Forevermore.’ The Nevada Artists Association was busy this weekend changing their gallery at the Brewery Arts Center; their landscape show opens today. Nolan Preese has an exhibit featuring photographs exploring Nevada’s watersheds on display at the Courthouse on the second floor.

Have you picked your pony yet? The Kentucky Derby is today, but that is far from the only thing running today. Chili on the Comstock is hosting their inaugural Fun with the Runs 5K Saturday at 10 a.m. The 1926 Edwards Motor Car is running, too, and ready for rides at the Nevada Railroad Museum. The wine walk is always a good time, and with Mother’s Day next weekend, it can’t hurt to peruse the shops before you run out of time to pick the perfect gift.

    Carson Victory Rollers battle the Auburn Outlaws Roller Derby team this Saturday, May 2. Doors open at 4 p.m. and you can watch the Carson Junior Victory Rollers scrimmage at 4:30 p.m. April Slams Bring May Jams bout begins at 6:30 p.m. Come out to the Marv Teixeira Pavilion at Mills Park and watch the action.

    Tickets: $7 Presale; $10 at the door; kids 10 and under are free.

    Pretty soon we all will face this. Beauty and cold. Our dawn mornings will again be snow filled and quiet, all over Carson City, and in Mills Park. This photograph was taken right after a overnight snow storm at sunrise in Mills Park a few years ago.
    Back in the day, Mills Park once served as our municipal golf course. Now it's home to a host of activities. The great rock band Three Dog Night played in the Marv Teixeira Pavilion in 1994 when the his pavilion opened. It was a great show. A great free show!

    Carson City Parks and Recreation Awards Ceremony October 21

    The Foundation for the Betterment of Carson City Parks and Recreation will present Special Recognition Awards for year 2014 recipients in a brief ceremony on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 4:30 p.m. at the monument at the entrance to the Marv Teixeira Pavilion (formerly Pony Express Pavilion) in Mills Park. The public is invited to attend this free, outdoor event.

    The awards will be presented in the following categories:

    Carson City Democratic Women and Central Committee Candidates Barbecue

    On Sunday, Sept. 14 is the Carson City Democratic Women and Central Committee's annual candidates barbecue from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Marv Teixeira Pavilion formerly the Pony Express Pavilion.

    Hear from candidates running for local and state offices plus get the latest information on ballot issues. Barbecue, salad and refreshments are $20 for adults, $5 for children and those under 5 are free. There will be a Bounce House and games for the kids.
