The sun is shining, the flowers blooming, the birds chirping, the wind gusting, and Carson City is hopping! Easter fun can be found this weekend at the annual EGGstravaganza at Carson Tahoe Medical Center, the Children’s Museum, the Carson Mall, and the Brewery Arts Center.

Head over to Mills Park for the Vietnam Veterans Day Celebration, complete with military vehicles, exhibits, and more. For demonstrations from soldiers with an even older history, the Nevada Civil War Volunteers will be in Dayton Saturday.

Free women’s self defense seminar Saturday

Leave your ice skates at home though, the Arlington Square ice rink has closed for the season.

If you haven’t heard yet, Sassafras has returned and is serving up its Eclectic fare in its new location right next to the Carson Hot Springs. Downtown, the Lake Tahoe Brewing Co. will be hosting the Chamber of Commerce for its Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting. Capital Eats inside Westside Pour House (former home of Mo and Sluggo’s) always has some tempting dishes. A little further north on Carson St., Living the Good Life Nightclub and Bistro has live music this evening and a delicious array of options on its menu.

Carson ATA Martial Arts Kids’ Safety and Success Seminar set for Saturday

Carson ATA Martial Arts - Karate for Kids is providing a free community Kids’ Safety and Success seminar followed by a pizza party this Saturday, Feb. 7.

The event, starting at 10am at Carson ATA Martial Arts, will cover topics such as stranger and abduction safety, bullying prevention, and online and home safety. There will be a hands-on segment to teach safety and bulling prevention techniques. Participants will also work on goal setting for school, home and activities, responsibility for school work and chores, creating proactive habits and how to follow through on goals.

Fighters Against Child Abuse is holding its Third Annual Christmas Coat, Toy and Donation Drive to benefit Carson, Douglas, and Lyon County Children. All donations stay in The Greater Carson Area, and 100% of all donations will be used to benefit an abused, neglected, or at-risk child.

FACA is seeking new clothing, socks, underwear, new coats, new toys, and Gift Cards to provide tangible goods to abused children, CASA, Austin's House Child Abuse Emergency Shelter, and Ventana Sierra, an organization that provides housing for aged-out Foster kids.

Safety seminar featured Sept. 27 as part of National Bullying Prevention Month

Carson ATA Karate for Kids is providing a free community Bullying Prevention and Stranger Safety seminar on Saturday, Sept. 27 to kick off National Bullying Prevention Month in October.

The event, starting at 11 a.m., begins with the reading of a proclamation by Carson City Supervisor Brad Bonkowski, proclaiming October as Carson City Bullying Prevention Month, followed by Sheriff Ken Furlong talking about bullying and stranger safety from a law enforcement perspective.

ALS Ice Bath Challenge, Bullying Prevention Seminar planned for Sept. 27

Jan Lopas, a Martial Arts coach, instructor, parent and student from Carson ATA Martial Arts, announced the school has joined the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

Carson ATA Martial Arts chief instructors, Mr. Goodner and Mr. Stevens, are taking this Ice Bucket Challenge one step further. They intend to take an Ice BATH for 3 minutes in exchange for donations to the ALS Association.

Miss USA Nia Sanchez celebrates Nevada homecoming with Carson City visit

Recently crowned Miss USA 2014 Nia Sanchez spent Wednesday in Carson City, the first celebration trip since becoming the first Miss USA from Nevada. She was crowned June 8.

Sanchez was officially greeted into the city by Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell, Carson City Visitors Bureau Director Joel Dunn, Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada members and the Carson High School Senators cheerleading team.

Miss USA Nia Sanchez to celebrate official Nevada homecoming

Newly crowned Miss USA 2014, Nia Sanchez, will return to her home state of Nevada for her official homecoming trip Wednesday, July 16 through Sunday, July 20. This will be Sanchez’s first celebration trip since becoming the first Miss USA from Nevada since she was crowned on Sunday, June 8.

Miss USA’s homecoming will kick off with a visit to the state’s capital, Carson City. Sanchez will have the opportunity to meet several government officials while visiting the historic Nevada State Capitol.

Carson ATA Martial Arts Car Wash - Donations Benefit Scholarships

Come support our local Martial Arts students as they will be washing cars for donations for One Child ATA Time, a group raising money for scholarships into the martial arts program.

These kids learn Respect, Courtesy, Perseverance, Loyalty, and they want to help others benefit from these skills. They will be accepting donations of $5 and up per car, and all of the proceeds go to the scholarship program.

Fighters Against Child Abuse launches 'Jeans 4 Tweens and Teens' clothing drive

Fighters Against Child Abuse, a non-profit group based out of Carson City, is initiating the "Jeans 4 Tweens and Teens" clothing drive.

Realizing help is needed more than just during the Holidays, FACA is setting up drop off locations for new or gently used jeans and clothing as well as new socks, underwear and sneakers.

FREE Women's Self Defense Seminar

Carson City makes 'flight plan for the future' with Saturday's aviation open house

The aviation community soars again at the Carson City Airport this Saturday with its "Flight Plan for the Future" open house — a family favorite among airplane, aircraft and aerospace enthusiasts of all ages.

The annual free event runs from 8:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Carson City Airport, 2600 College Parkway. More than 4,000 visitors attended in 2012, and this year’s open house promises plenty of excitement with dozens of aircraft on display and FREE plane rides for children 8-17 years of age.

GE Employees Come Together for Charity

The third annual Austinpalooza was a night of food, music and festivities that culminated in over $8,500 in funds raised for Austin’s House and the Society of Women Engineers at University Nevada, Reno. The event, organized by GE’s Measurement and Control employees in Minden, was held Friday, February 22, 2013, at Jethro’s Bar and Grill in Gardnerville, Nevada. Fighters Against Child Abuse shifts community focus to prevention

After meeting with multiple child abuse agencies and being advised where FACA can help most in the greater Carson City community, it has been decided that the new focus for Fighters Against Child Abuse in 2013 will be in the area of prevention.

Carson City Candlelight Vigil 6 p.m. Saturday on Sidewalk of Nevada State Capitol

The shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut has claimed the lives of 26 people, 20 of them children. This is a tragedy that has gained national attention and has wrenched the hearts of Carson City residents. Saturday night, December 15, as the sun sets at 6:00 p.m., members of the Carson City business community will be hosting a candlelight vigil on the sidewalk of the Nevada State Capitol building, located at 101 North Carson Street.

The Carson City group of Fighters Against Child Abuse has announced their creation of "The Baby Cabinet" The creation of this program, initiated by FACA Vice President Lori Primak is designed to help struggling families due to unemployment, not qualifying for assistance under strict guidelines and awaiting determinations.
