Nevada Letters About Literature student competition winners named; advance to national competition
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 04/29/2019 - 11:16amNevada Humanities has announced the winners of the statewide Letters About Literature program. 243 students from Nevada submitted entries to the national competition at the Library of Congress, and nine Nevada students placed in the top three of their respective judging categories and will be honored in a ceremony in Las Vegas on Tuesday, May 7, 2019. The first place winners in each category will represent Nevada at the national competition in Washington, D.C.

Northern Nevada lecturer Mike Thomas will review that 1968 blockbuster film and its impact on a generation during his presentation Saturday, June 9 at Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory in Carson City.
Nevada Humanities Presents Author Julie Buntin in Northern Nevada

Ms. Buntin is the author of Marlena: A Novel, the 2018 pick for Nevada Reads — a statewide, public book club. Nevada Reads invites Nevadans to read selected works of literature and to come together in their communities to share the ideas and perceptions inspired by the book club selections.

Nevada ‘Talking Books’ collection gives voice to written word
Submitted by editor on Thu, 04/20/2017 - 12:32pmBrett Silver is a voracious reader, and he has been since childhood. He’s also legally blind. “My grandma was a retired school teacher,” he said. “She made sure I got my own kind of library.”
She discovered the Talking Books program at the Nevada State Library and Archives and introduced it to her grandson.
Horses gather at the refurbished watering fountain during Nevada Day Parade
Submitted by editor on Mon, 10/31/2016 - 7:19pmIt didn't take long after the recent refurbishing of the horse trough watering fountain before units from the Carson City, Washoe, Reno, and Sparks law enforcement units stopped by to water the horses during the Nevada Day Parade on Saturday. This was a wonderful flashback to the original purpose of the fountains and the rebuild this year.
John Wayne stars in 'Stagecoach' presented by Carson City Classic Cinema Club

Director John Ford combined action, drama, humor, and a set of well-drawn characters in the story of a group of strangers riding on a stagecoach through dangerous Apache territory.
The film offers plenty of cowboys, Indians, shootouts, and chases, aided by Bert Glennon's majestic photography of Ford's beloved Monument Valley.
Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read, Sept. 27-Oct. 3, 2015

Plan B hosts free showing of '12 Angry Men' and hosts '12 Angry Jurors' cast meet and greet

Before the film, at 6 p.m., the cast of Proscenium Players "12 Angry Jurors" will make an appearance, in costume and in character. The director of the play, which opens August 16 at Silver State Charter School, will also be on hand to answer questions.

A Face in the Crowd starring Andy Griffith
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 07/25/2012 - 12:41pmA Face in the Crowd, a film debuting Andy Griffith in his first major role, will be presented at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 1st, at the Carson City Library.
The film will be hosted by former state archivist Guy Rocha and Reno News and Review editor Dennis Myers. The movie was directed and produced in 1957 by Elia Kazan, and written by Budd Schulberg. This film, which launched Griffith into stardom in the lead role as Larry “Lonesome” Rhodes, also stars actors Patricia Neal, Anthony Franciosa, Walter Matthau, and Lee Remick.
Unemployment Rate Up Statewide
