It is with a very heavy heart that I ask our community to come together and support our law enforcement agency. On August 15, 2015 the unthinkable happened to a member of our organization.

Deputy Carl Howell a veteran officer of nine years was fatally shot in the line of duty while investigating a domestic battery in Carson City. Carl leaves behind a loving wife and four children who also need our support, thoughts and prayers as they negotiate through the most horrific time in their lives.

UPDATE: Funeral services for Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Carl Howell, killed in the line of duty early Saturday on a domestic violence call, will be held on Thursday, Aug. 20, 11 a.m. at the Reno Events Center.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office deputy killed early Saturday while responding to a domestic violence call has been identified as Carl Howell, a 9-year-veteran of the Carson City Sheriff's Office. He leaves behind a wife and four children.

Carson City sheriff’s deputies responded to the report of a physical domestic disturbance between a male and female in the 4100 block of Montez Drive in East Carson City.

Nevada Business Connections recently completed its 100th on-site interview and tours of manufacturers in Carson City, Douglas and Lyon counties. NBC's executive director Kris Holt and six members helped survey existing manufacturers regarding a great business climate and issues of concern.

There are many definitions of the word “pest,” and personal perceptions of pests can often be very different. A pest might be annoying (ants), damaging to plants (rabbits), a health concern (ticks) or a cause for fear (black widow spiders). However, relatively few pests cause significant injury to plants, so pesticides are rarely needed.

The Fair at Fuji Park and the Silver Dollar Classic at Mills Park are still going strong. While you’re at Mills Park, take a ride on the train: rides begin at noon. Genoa is a great place to spend an afternoon. This month’s Sweet Sippin Sunday features Tequila cocktails and music by Carson’s own, Janera Paxton of the Whitehats. Mozart lovers won’t want to miss TOCATTA at the Shepard in the Sky Church for their Mozart in the Mountains concert.

I apologize, Carson City. You have some decisions to make. There is quite a bit going on whether you want something family friendly, adults only, indoors, outdoors, or a combination of it all. The weekly Farmers Market at Third and Curry St. is always a good way to start the weekend. Yummy food, a bounce house for the kids, and beautiful flowers are hard to argue with. The weekend has arrived and it’s bringing a plethora of activity with it. Car lovers will want to head to the Silver Dollar Car Classic at the Max Casino, known as the Carson Station just a few days ago. The Classic moves to Mills Park for the weekend. If the Mustangs and Broncos you prefer are horses, rather than Fords, you’ll want to grab a ticket to the Bull Riding Competition at the State Fair. Carnival rides, circus performances, and live music will keep everyone entertained. Make sure to catch the shuttle from the Casino Fandango parking garage: parking at Fuji Park is extremely limited. ‘Break a leg’ to the cast of Peter Pan. Youth Theater Carson City opens tonight at the Community Center.

Hello fellow anglers, I have heard over and over how bad the fishing is because of low waters in our area. There are plenty of places to fish in our local area that are very fishable. Renee and I fished up on Wolf Creek, Silver Creek and the East Carson last weekend. Some were good others were slow, we adjusted for every place we fished and had a successful fun day.

A reader recently asked me if a solution of vinegar, Epsom salts and a small amount of liquid dish soap, mixed and sprayed on weeds was as effective as using glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup and similar products) and safer. The reader went on to ask, “If this solution is as effective as Roundup and much cheaper, is there anything in the mixture that would/could be dangerous to humans?”

Can you believe it? It’s the last weekend of July and the kids will be headed back to school in no time. Don’t be dismayed though, plenty of summer fun can still be found. Sign the kids up for the Capital City Kids’ Triathlon at the Carson Aquatic Center. Head out to Mills Park for a few laps on the train or a picnic. Don’t miss out on making a bowl for the Empty Bowls project at the Farmers Market; or let the kids run off to the bounce house while you make a bowl yourself.

A 39-year-old Carson City man was arrested Tuesday in the 1500 block of Monte Rosa Drive on suspicion of felony child neglect, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Carson Now is withholding the name of the suspect, who is the father of the victim, to protect the juvenile. The man was booked at 3:03 p.m. on $40,000 bail.

The Karson Kruzers are hosting their annual car show at Fuji Park, but will be making their way downtown after it’s over, so there will be plenty of cool cars to admire. Mojo Green takes the stage at 7 p.m. and you can head into the Carson Cigar Company to enjoy Reno’s newest Pink Floyd Tribute Band, Scarlett Moon at 9 p.m.

I visited a friend this past week who is an outstanding plant person. Peg’s landscape is filled with plant species or varieties that I have not used before. They are perennials with interesting foliage, flowers, form and often scent. They are also water-efficient and hardy for our area. I wandered around her little horticulture heaven being inspired to broaden my plant choices.

A 25-year-old woman was arrested Saturday on felony charges including burglary and crimes against an elderly person after she allegedly stole a purse belolonging to an 85-year-old woman who was shopping inside Walmart, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

Arrested was Jacqueline Cunningham of Elko. According to the report, Carson City sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Walmart in the 3200 block of Market Street regarding a larceny in progress.

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church won best wine walk stop last month and will have live music. Don’t forget to spend some time inside Westside Pour House: ARTistically INKlined pop-up gallery returns and proves that tattoo artists are first, and foremost, artists.

Last week, Assistant Controller Geoffrey Lawrence and I presented to the Legislature the state budget we developed with some Assembly members, professionals and business people as an alternative to the Governor’s proposal.

Las Vegas left-wing pundit Steve Sebelius trashed it and us. No surprise because he’s an aggressive tax-spend-regulate statist PC liberal, while our proposals are the antidote to such maladies. What was surprising is the ignorance, laziness, carelessness and possible malice and dishonesty in his attacks. They demonstrate the sorry state of much journalism today.

Trees add significant value to a property. They provide financial benefit for resale, aesthetic value, climate control, wildlife habitat, water and soil protection and air pollution mitigation. In a drought, trees have a few adaptive defense mechanisms that help to reduce water loss. However, over extended periods of drought, tree growth and appearance can suffer and trees may die.

Get over the mid-week hump with some live music. Dave Leather will entertain with some lunchtime Americana and Blues at Comma Coffee. The weekly Jazz Jam at Sassafras will see Rick Metz and his group First Take. Enjoy the tunes at Living the Good Life, Z Bistro, or Glen Eagles during dinner. Work up an appetite at the annual West Side Cruiser Tour: an easy four mile, family-friendly ride that leaves from the Brewery Arts Center. Find a costume, decorate your bike, and have a great time!

Happy Mother’s Day, Carson City! Several family friendly events are occurring around town this weekend. Take a ride on the McKeen Motor Car at the Nevada State Railroad Museum or the Ferris Wheel at RSVP’s Spring Fair and Carnival. A Harmonica and Strings Concert at Empire Elementary School showcases what some of our talented students can do. Get up early and head over to the Carson City Airport if your youngster has any interest in planes: Young Eagles flights are happening today if the weather permits.

Extreme drought in the West draws attention to what a precious resource water is. Of all the water on Earth, only a small amount is available for us to use. Since 97 percent is salt water, there is only three percent fresh water for the world to survive on. Of that, slightly over two percent is stuck in glaciers and icecaps.

Yet, even with such a small percentage of fresh water available, we put 50 percent of our home water into our landscapes, often wasting about 50 percent of that by applying it ineffectively or unnecessarily.

A thunderstorm has developed in Carson City this afternoon bringing rain, lightning and small hail to the area. As of 3 p.m. there were no National Weather Service advisories.
Today's forecast calls for the rain to continue, with an 80 percent chance of showers for Carson City and Carson Valley. There's a 30 percent chance of rain for Thursday and a slight chance of showers Friday and Saturday.
The rain is welcome given our drought conditions, but the lightning always leaves room for caution. Thus far there hasn't been any reports of lightning caused fires around Carson City.

Apples picked fresh off the tree taste so delicious, until you look at your half-eaten apple and find a worm or the brown mess left by a worm. If you had apples with worms last year, it is likely you will have wormy apples this year too, unless you take precautions.

Worms in apples are the caterpillar larvae of codling moths. These relatives of butterflies also attack pears, plums and walnuts. Each female moth lays 30 to 70 tiny disc-shaped eggs singly on the fruit, spurs or nearby leaves. After hatching, the white to light pink “worms” with dark heads bore into the fruit.
