The Carson River Watershed “Get on the Bus” Tour will cover a variety of watershed topics and locations from the headwaters in Alpine County, Calif., to a tour of the Lahontan Dam and Gate House near Fallon.

Fort Churchill State Historic Park launches third annual amateur photo contest

SILVER SPRINGS, Nev. – Fort Churchill State Historic Park is pleased to announce its third annual amateur photo contest. Visitors to Fort Churchill and Buckland Station are invited to submit photos of scenery, plants, wildlife and cultural resources found within the park. The top three winners will receive a Nevada State Parks Passport Permit, good for free entrance to any Nevada State Park for an entire year.

Nevada State Park staff invite the public to enjoy days full of fun, relaxation and nature at Lahontan. Canoe trips will launch from just below the Lahontan Dam and travel along the Carson River about five miles down to the Irrigation Diversion Dam.

This trip is relatively flat; a great opportunity for beginners to learn the basics of canoeing. Canoes, paddles and life jackets will be provided by Nevada State Parks, but participants will need to bring sun block and drinking water. Space is limited, so please make reservations by calling 775-867-3500.

Enjoy a day full of fun, relaxation and nature with a canoe trip that starts just below the Lahontan Dam and runs along the Carson River to the Irrigation Diversion Dam. This event is a great opportunity for beginners to learn the basics of canoeing.

Canoes, paddles and life jackets will be provided, however participants will need to bring sunscreen and drinking water; a sack lunch is optional. Space is limited, so please call 775-867-3500 for reservations.

NV Energy begins work on new $6.1 million Lahontan Substation

Construction has begun on a $6.1 million substation that, once finished, will be a key hub for much of the power supplied to the Lahontan Valley, according to NV Energy. The substation is being built adjacent to an existing substation about a half mile northeast of Lahontan Dam.

Once the new facility is completed, the existing facility, built in the 1950s, will be retired from service and dismantled, said Russell Groesbeck, area service manager for NV Energy’s Fallon office. The project is expected to be finished by March 2015.

Dutch Oven Cook-off at Lahontan State Recreation Area

Obituary Hal Slagle

Harold (Hal) Howard Slagle passed away October 3, 2013 in Orange, CA. Born January 25, 1933 in Oregon IL.
He is survived by his sister Frances O'Brian of Oregon, IL, a brother Charles Slagle of Prescott, AZ and his daughters and their families, Karen Bien of Rochelle, IL and Linda Hoffman of Lake Elsinore, CA and 5 grandsons, 6 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, Harold Francis Slagle, mother, Bertha Viola Buker and his son, Stephen Howard Slagle.
He was a long time resident of Fallon, NV and Lahontan Dam area.

Public canoe trips at Lahontan State Recreation Area in July and August

Glide through the waters of Lahontan, enjoying the serenity and wildlife of the Carson River. Free public canoe trips in July and August guided by Lahontan State Recreation Area will start just below the Lahontan Dam along the Carson River and go down to the Irrigation Diversion Dam.
