The Carson City School District is looking to fill a number of positions and is holding a job fair this afternoon. See what the talented students in the Symphony Youth Strings program have been up to at tonight’s "Around the World in Music" concert at the Community Center. A special candle lighting ceremony to remember loved ones takes place this evening at Fitzhenry’s Funeral Home. All those who have lost someone are welcome to participate. Don’t let a little Bah Humbug ruin your day.

Black Friday, small business Saturday, cyber Monday: I didn’t name these, but I can truly get behind Day of Giving Tuesday. Carson City is home to several great charities and non-profits that could use your financial love. Throw a few dollars at your favorite one if you’re able. It’s not warm outside, but a brisk hike will warm you up. Muscle Powered shows off one of Carson City’s great trails every Tuesday afternoon. If you’d rather exercise your brain, DJ Trivia at the Fox Brewpub or the Geeks who Drink Pub Quiz at Sassafras are a great mix of friends and friendly competition.

Last week, a basketball game among rivals Douglas High and Carson High inspired more comradery than animosity as it raised money for the teens injured in the Nov. 9 rollover. Tonight, an alumni hoops battle takes place to raise more money; go cheer them on, we are all winners in this game. The weather should be wonderful for this afternoon’s downtown walk with Muscle Powered. The Friends of the Carson City Library bring author J.L. Pattison to Browsers Corner for their November meet and greet.

It’s time for Tuesday. Every week you’ll find a new trail to discover with Muscle Powered; this week it’s the Linear Ditch Trail which runs from Governors Field to the Moffet Open Space Trail. Jakki Ford takes the mic when the Mile High Jazz Band hits the stage at Comma Coffee. Sierra Forums gives free presentations on a diverse blend of topics with area experts. Sustainable Living is the subject of tonight’s forum at the Brewery Arts Center.

It’s wintry out there, but if you aren’t afraid of the wind-chill, enjoy a walk along the Linear Ditch Trail with Parks and Recreation. Spaghetti is on the menu at J’s Old Town Bistro in Dayton. You’ll be helping out the Lady Dust Devils Basketball program while enjoying delicious pasta. Join the Carson City Classical Cinema Club for this month’s flick, The Fabulous Dorseys, and make sure you’re there for the trivia portion. Speaking of trivia, Tuesdays are packed with it. Sassafras hosts the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz and you’ll find DJ Trivia at the Fox Brewpub.

Everywhere you look, we are ready for Halloween: skeletons and cobwebs, pumpkins and monsters, witches and headstones. Tonight is the real deal. There have been several Halloween celebrations already, but nothing beats trick-or-treat night. Get started at the Carson Mall, then head over to the Nevada Humane Society for even more candy. The Downtown Business Association welcomes the costumed kids to their Candy Crawl. But there’s nothing quite like the historic west side when it comes to Halloween.

Here is an updated parade list for all the entries in the Nevada Day Parade on Saturday. Note, there was a last-minute change in streets where the entries are supposed to line up that is different than the printed program. The change was made to accommodate some larger floats. I hope you’ve got your Halloween costume ready. A week of various Halloween activities, trick-or-treats, and festivities for the kids begins tomorrow with the first ever Boo-nanza: a family-friendly collaboration between the Community Center, Carson City Library, and Aquatic Center. Tonight, the over 21 crowd gets to enjoy a costume contest at Alatte inside the Carson Nugget, with many more parties on the way.

I don’t know what is about Tuesdays in our valley, but they’re hopping. Join Parks and Recreation as they take a walk to the Kings Canyon Waterfall, one of Carson City’s not-so-hidden treasures. Enjoy the Carson High Orchestra during their Fall Concert at the Bob Boldrick Theater tonight at 7 p.m. It’s Adult Coloring Night at the Carson City Library: bring your favorite doodle book, or choose from one of theirs. Know-it-alls can strut their stuff during DJ Trivia at Fox Brewpub, or at the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint.

I’ve said it before: Tuesdays are pretty busy around Carson City. Mile High Jazz Band gets the night jumping at Comma Coffee. The Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz and DJ Trivia are always a good way to stretch one’s intellect. Take a walk on the wild side, well, art side of Carson City with today’s special Easy Walk hosted by Muscle Powered: you’ll get a glimpse of all our downtown art show, including the newest exhibit at the Courthouse Gallery showcasing Susanne Forestieri . Some weekends are pretty cut and dry, just a few things to choose among. This, however, is not one of those weekends. High-flying, death-defying action takes over the Minden Airport as the Aviation Roundup Air Show takes to the skies. Pasta-lovers won’t want to miss the Eldorado Great Italian Festival in downtown Reno. Carson City’s monthly Downtown Wine Walk gets a dose of nostalgia as the Western Airstream Convention sets up shop and welcomes the curious.

Every week I bring you all the happenings in Carson City, my hometown of over 35 years, but I was born in Las Vegas. I’m heartsick over what transpired Sunday night, but equally comforted by the outpouring of support this community has shown. Nevada Day is just weeks away, and I am truly grateful to be Battle Born. Calling all Geeks. After a long hiatus, the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz has returned to Carson City, and is setting up shop inside Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint on Tuesday nights. Grab your smartest friends for a fun night of yummy drinks, great food, and nerdy competition. It's National Register to Vote Day - Carson residents can go to the County Clerk's office in the Courthouse. While you're there, head to the CCAI Gallery on the second floor to catch the last few days of the 'Industrial Art: Sports Edition' exhibit.

Northern Nevada is filled with very different people with a wide variety of interests. I strive to make sure that my things-to-do lists reflect the many options available to you. Today, for example, you’ll find a fundraiser for Catmandu, the monthly meeting of the fly fishing club, some country line dancing, jazz and poetry, and a walk along the historic Blue Line Trail. No two Tuesdays are alike (or Wednesdays or Thursdays, for that matter), so it’s always worth checking out. Now that we are moving into autumn, the activities in Carson City change like the leaves.

It’s back to school and back to work, but that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. Get your kicks on the dance floor in Carson Lanes’ Eleventh Frame Lounge; DJ Bobby will teach you how to line dance. The Classic Cinema Club presents Edmond O'Brien and Pamela Britton in ‘D.O.A.’ Get there at 6:30 p.m. for discussion and film trivia. For the true trivia junkies, the Fox Brewpub hosts DJ Trivia tonight – all ages are welcome and there are prizes at stake. Halloween lovers of all ages will want to participate in the upcoming production of ‘Nightmare before Christmas’ at Piper’s Opera House.

Welcome to Wednesday, Carson City. The middle of the week may be known as hump day, but the Brewery Arts Center wants it to be something to look forward to. Wheeled Food Wednesday features family fun, community, and plenty of yummy eats from local food trucks. It’s generally thought that Carson City was named after Kit Carson, but that’s only partially true. The Carson River was named for the explorer, while Carson City was named for the river that runs through it. Learn more about this important high desert watershed at Dayton State Park.

Labor Day weekend approaches. In addition to being a wine walk weekend in lovely downtown Carson City, the annual Best in the West Rib Cook-off in Sparks and Virginia City’s Civil War Days promise to make it a weekend packed with fun. Join Parks and Recreation for an easy walk through our historical east side or get your heart rate up with Muscle Powered this afternoon as they trek through Voltaire Canyon. Job seekers may find what they're looking for at the Carson Nugget: all experience levels are welcome for their Job Fair featuring several casino, hotel, and restaurant openings.

We are starting to see a little bit of a cool down, which makes a summer stroll all the more enjoyable. Join the Friends of the Nevada State Museum for a walking tour along the blue line; you’ll learn more about this historical district and the people who lived there. The Kings Canyon Waterfall is always spectacular, and today’s Muscle Powered Conditioning Hike will take you there and show off some amazing views of our valley. Thinking caps are optional at the Fox Brewpub during tonight’s DJ Trivia.

TUESDAY:

The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival has buddied up with something new this year. Today and tomorrow, the Jukebox International Film Festival features fifteen contestants competing in four categories. Youth Theater Carson City and Western Nevada Musical Theater alum, Grant Davis, is back in town to show support for ‘Something Like Summer,’ the Australian musical he stars in. Make sure you’re in McFadden Plaza around 5 p.m. Davis will be performing songs from the movie and music from his debut album on the Third Street Stage.

A jazzy Tuesday has arrived. Catch the Millennial Bugs this evening as they perform in the Comma Coffee Courtyard. Take the kids up to Silver City this morning and they’ll get a chance to explore the Community Garden, learn about the plants and flowers, and participate in an activity. The Deputy Howell Memorial Concert is just a week and a half away. Attend the meeting for volunteers and help this event go off without a hitch.

It may be a universal truth that kids love helicopters. Alright, everyone loves helicopters. Head to Mills Park for the annual ‘National Night Out’ with the Carson City Sheriff’s Department for free hot dogs, cool equipment, vendors, and more. Take a team of smarty-pants to Fox Brewpub and fight for a place on the DJ Trivia leaderboard. You’ll be whisked to ‘Non-stop New York’ at the Brewery Arts Center during tonight’s Classic Cinema Club film viewing.

TUESDAY:

The Carson City Fair gathers steam today: they’ll be setting up the carnival, judging the items in the exhibit hall, and the 4-H kids are showing off what their dogs can do. It’s a play-doh afternoon at the Carson City Library, in addition to their weekly Pajama Story time on Tuesday evenings. The Carson Nugget is hosting a job fair to fill a plethora of positions in their restaurants and on the casino floor.

It is going to be a beautiful Tuesday: toasty, but not too hot, and with a nice afternoon breeze. As the summer goes along, kids get a little antsy. Take your grade schooler up to Silver City for their annual Bike Safety Rodeo and you’ll leave confident that they know the rules of the road. Hit the dance floor tonight. You can learn some beginning swing dance moves at El Charro Avita. Grab your partner and head to Carson Lanes for lessons in country line dancing and a good time with DJ Cowboy Bobby Truesdale.

It was pointed out to me that this is a week full of palindromes – a bit of fun word play with something that is the same forward and backwards. July 11, __17 is also 7.11.17, tomorrow 7 12 17, and so on. Coincidentally today, 7/11, is also free slurpee day at your neighborhood 7-Eleven. A full moon and a performance by the Mile High Jazz Band in the Comma Coffee Courtyard. Living the Good Life goes acoustic with singer/songwriter Canyon White.

A group of youthful entrepreneurs with the Young African Leaders Initiative visited Carson City this past week as part of a six-week tour of the United States.

It’s Tuesday, and that means it’s time to explore another one of Carson City’s great walking trails with Parks and Recreation. The Ambrose Carson River nature area in on the list for today, so grab some water and sunscreen and enjoy the fresh air. Learn about CASA, and what they do for the children of our valley, during an informal meet-and-greet at San Rafael Coffee. It’s all hands on deck for the Deputy Howell Memorial Music Festival; a meeting for the volunteers is tonight at Battle Born Harley Davidson. Grab your cowboy boots and head out to Carson Lanes for line dance lessons.

I love the summer solstice - longest day of sunshine all year. Celebrate the first day of summer with a hike up to our waterfalls; the guided Muscle Powered hike this evening will show you the way. Load up the kids and take a short drive to Silver City; all summer they offer educational fun stuff like today's 'mining for chocolate' activity. It's a night of 1000 Dad Jokes at the Brewery Arts Center where funny and punny run smack-dab into silly - laughter is the best family activity.

The thermometer will inch up some today; still not ‘day at the beach’ warm, but better than yesterday. Sierra Nevada Forums brings you some good information about the pitfalls and dark side of social media: join in the conversation at the Brewery Arts Center. The monthly Mile High Jazz Band show moves from Comma Coffee to the stage in McFadden Plaza, so it’s a free poetry and jazz show for all. Take a tour of the Stewart Indian School as part of today’s Parks and Rec Easy Walk. The historic site will be bustling with the annual Father’s Day Pow Wow come Friday.

As the thermometer approaches 90, remind yourself that snow fell a few weeks ago and the heat is well overdue. We bypassed spring and lept right into summer. Enjoy a bluesy morning in Silver City as local musician, Mylo McCormick, takes the stage for a free acoustic concert. Bad man, John Wayne, tussles with an angel at tonight’s Classic Cinema Club offering at the Brewery Arts Center. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a friend on today’s Conditioning Hike up Goni with Muscle Powered.
