Information Hour

Things to do on Thursday: sewing, song, and CASA training

Event Date:
March 8, 2018 (All day)

Our library didn’t just get a new coat of paint during the several weeks it was undergoing its ‘refresh.’ It was also creating space for makers. Several programs are in the works that will require the use of the new sewing machines, and you’ll need to get certified before you can participate. Drop in today or on Saturday and you’ll be ready for anything. Carolyn Dolan brings the blues to Living the Good Life, but if you want to take to the stage yourself, look for karaoke at Jimmy G’s Hookah Lounge or the new Bella Vita Bistro in the Carson Mall.

Things to do on Thursday: music and karaoke, but no hike

Event Date:
March 1, 2018 (All day)

As I write this, the snow has not yet begun to fall. I cannot predict whether we’ll see one inch or seven inches on the valley floor over the next few days, but wet roads make for a more dangerous journey. Please stay safe out there. Muscle Powered has already cancelled today's planned hike in Washoe Valley. If you do venture out this evening, head downtown. You’ll find karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar, the Roska Collective in the Sage Lounge at Battle Born Social, and all you can eat wings at the Fox Brewpub.

CASA hosts March 1 volunteer information and training hour

Event Date:
March 1, 2018 - 6:00pm

Due to the cold and ugly weather the past couple of days, Court Appointed Special Advocates, also known as CASA, is again offering an information hour. Currently, there are over 100 children in the Carson City child welfare system. Less than 20 of those children are headed towards reunification with their parents.

Victorian fashion, Voting machines, and more: Things to do on Thursday

Event Date:
February 22, 2018 (All day)

I really can’t keep up with the changing weather reports around here. I think we are expecting snow, so you’ll want to be ready for anything. Our County Clerk’s office is holding an open house to show off the new voting machines we’ll be using for this year’s elections.

CASA volunteer information hour, training Feb. 22

Event Date:
February 22, 2018 - 6:00pm

Looking for a way to contribute to your community children? Can you dedicate, on average, 8-10 hours a month to help advocate what's in the best interest of a local child?

CASA of Carson City represents the best interest of children that have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect and/or abandonment.

We need volunteers to be the eyes and ears for our juvenile court judges; someone to represent the best interest of the child and to solely focus on the child's well being, wants and needs.

No experience needed. Must be 21 or older and have a passion for children.

Thursday, Oct. 19: Things to do in Carson City

Event Date:
October 19, 2017 (All day)

The weekend is almost here, bringing with it early Halloween parties, the Advocates to End Domestic Violence ‘Light up the Dark’ Run/walk, and even more fun at the Nevada Railroad Museum. For now, you may as well enjoy the day we’ve been given.

CASA Volunteer Information Hour

Event Date:
October 19, 2017 - 6:00pm

“There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children.” — Nelson Mandela

More than 700,000 children experience abuse and/or neglect each year. Instead of playing with neighbors and making happy family memories, they’re attending court hearings, adjusting to new foster homes and transitioning to new schools. That’s a heavy burden for a child to carry.

CASA Volunteer Information Hour / Training

Event Date:
July 6, 2017 - 6:00pm

Did you ever want to help children in foster care? To be a voice for a child who cannot speak up on their own? What about just helping children in your community, letting them know that they are wanted and that there is a person (YOU!) who listens to them and advocates for their best interests?

Event Date:

75 years ago, the USS Nevada was one of the battleships trapped when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. She was the only battleship to get underway during the attack, and according to Naval historian Kermit (Kit) H. Bonner the ship was "the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal and depressing morning" for the United States. Today we remember those lost in that attack, and remember the history behind the battleship that is our battle born namesake. A special exhibit of USS Nevada artifacts, and a lecture on her history are free for all at the State Museum at 1 p.m.

CASA Volunteers are people from all walks of life. Some work full time jobs but most are retired. CASAs are people who care about children and have common sense. All are over 21 and have reliable transportation. The Volunteers can write a comprehensive report and are able to stand up in front of the court and speak about the foster child's needs.

Part 3 in a series of CASA of Carson City: Who Are Our Foster Kids?

In part three of this series, we will discuss the foster kids that CASA Volunteers work with. Foster kids are just that, kids. They are tall, short, fat, skinny and average sized. They have blonde, brown, black, red hair and blue, brown, hazel eyes. They have olive, freckled, light complexions. They love sports, animals, music and cartoons. They want to grow up to be doctors, fireman, models, and astronauts. They are kids.
