The annual National Pony Express re-ride strolled through 2nd and Curry street in Carson City earlier than expected Wednesday morning. But those who arrived early to watch came prepared with cameras and bright smiles as two riders exchanged horses and pleasantries in middle of the road.

Planes, trains, and automobiles take over Carson City this weekend. Steampunk ‘N’ Trains at the Nevada Railroad Museum features train rides, fun costumes, food trucks and more. You’ll find two car shows in town – the Party at the Pavilion as part of the Nevada State Fair and the Carson City Downtown Revival Car Show at the Carson Nugget. Beware, or you'll suffer from fun stuff overload. The State Fair and Rendezvous continues at Mills Park, and now you can head into the Pavilion and get your car or bike registered for the Show and Shine. Shiny cars are also welcome at the Carson Cruise - Meet and Greet's Summer Cruise Night: start out at Bully's Sports Bar and you'll convoy down to McFadden Plaza for the Fridays at the Fox Concert Series Kick-off. Shane Dwight takes the stage to get weekend off to a great start.

Holy moly, what a way to start the weekend. The Nevada State Fair kicks off today in Carson City’s Mills Park and so does the Annual Carson Valley Days celebration in Douglas County. No matter where you are, there is a carnival nearby. You’ll find some fun in downtown Carson tonight with karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar or at the Westside Pour House. Kick start your bike and head to Battle Born Harley; their Bike Night features live music by the Smoken Rabbits. Keep a sweater handy, the temperature is dipping a little, and will drop even further as soon as the sun goes down.

Thursday was Agriculture Day at Empire Elementary School in Carson City. Woody Worthington, president of the Carson and Douglas County Farm Bureau, helped coordinate with the Nevada Department of Agriculture and several local agencies to provide the experience for students.

With the recent report of a human case of West Nile Virus in southern Nevada, the state's Department of Agriculture urges horse owners throughout the state to vaccinate against the disease. West Nile Virus can cause severe illness in a horse’s brain, spinal cord and nervous system.

The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) began receiving accounts of horses exposed to equine herpes virus type 4 (EHV-4) and Streptococcus equi bacterial infection — also known as strangles or equine distemper — as of Saturday, Feb. 18, NDA public information officer Rebecca Allured said in a press release late Wednesday.

On Monday, Feb. 6, the Nevada Department of Agriculture gathered 16 feral horses that were wandering in east Carson City for about three weeks. The horses will be vaccinated with fertility control drugs, as part of an agreement between the NDA and the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign and then relocated to an area south of Highway 50 near Stagecoach.

Northern Nevada Development Authority announced Thursday that Valerie Melendez has been named as the new Tribal Economic Development Director and Tonya Champa as the Investor Relations Director.

Sheila Hillebrand's art gallery and decor business on C Street in Virginia City ran out of room pretty quickly, she said.

"I had everything stacked up in the hallway where they could look through it," she said. "But most people don't look through it."

For more than a quarter century, Carson City’s own Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights has rung in the holiday season for residents and visitors of the Nevada state capital.

It didn't take long after the recent refurbishing of the horse trough watering fountain before units from the Carson City, Washoe, Reno, and Sparks law enforcement units stopped by to water the horses during the Nevada Day Parade on Saturday. This was a wonderful flashback to the original purpose of the fountains and the rebuild this year.

I’m usually a lover of sunny days, but right now I say bring on the rain. The moisture is a welcome help to our heroic firefighters in Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley. Because of the wet weather and the recent fires, some activities have been postponed: most notably the Advocates to End Domestic Violence’s Annual Light After Dark Run. There are still plenty of things to occupy your time, but the weather may force more cancellations.

After a collision on Toll Road in south Reno, Nevada Department of Agriculture officials urge motorists to use extreme caution when driving in the Virginia Range area. The collision took place late on Tuesday night and involved two vehicles and three feral horses. The motorists sustained no injuries, but the accident resulted in two dead horses.
