Honor Flight Nevada to soar this weekend with 2016 regional chili cook off and craft fair

Whether mild, medium or fiery, there’s one place this weekend that will be filled with a western culinary collision of tangy peppers, garlic and onion, tomato and cumin.

Chili lovers from around the region will gather at Glen Eagles restaurant in Carson City this weekend for the High Sierra and Nevada Capitol Regional Chili Cook Offs.

Honor Flight Nevada is hosting the High Sierra and Nevada Capitol Regional Chili Cook Offs at Glen Eagles Restaurant Saturday July 9-10.

The winner of the Chili Cook Offs and the winner of the Salsa competition continue on to the National Cook Offs. People's Choice Chili Competition is open to everyone's voting. Chili sampling kits, raffle prizes, Military vehicles, Craft fair, and fun for all under the trees.

Special moments experienced on Honor Flight trip

Four and a half hours of travel can be draining on anybody, especially for a group of World War Two, Korean, and Vietnam veterans. As their Honor Flight Nevada flight landed in Baltimore, the 80 and 90-year-old men slowly make their wave off the plane, tired and worn from the trip. But the moment they step into the airport, that exhaustion is forgotten and replaced with an overwhelming sense of emotion.

Vietnam veterans honored at ceremony in Carson City

Nevada Vietnam War veterans were honored Saturday in Carson City as dozens gathered in Mills Park to observe the Vietnam Veterans Day of Remembrance and hold a welcome home ceremony at the Nevada Vietnam War Memorial.

Frank Reynolds, current president of the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) local chapter 388 in Carson City, opened the ceremony with the Pledge of Allegiance and the chapter’s chaplain delivered the invocation.

Honor Flight Nevada Fundraiser Saturday at Charlie's Grilled Subs

A fundraiser benefitting Honor Flight Nevada will be held Saturday, March 5, at 11 a.m. at Charlie's Grilled Subs in the Carson Mall.

All menu items are included in the fundraiser, which will last until the items are gone.

Honor Flight Nevada is an annual charitable event that seeks to send military veterans of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam to Washington, D.C., to visit the war memorials built commemorating their service and sacrifice.

Stick around for a concert in the park featuring Dougie L. and the Lost Reverends, but you’ll want to bring a blanket or lawn chair. Honor Flight Nevada soars with all the right spice at High Sierra Regional Chili Cookoff

With the waft of peppers, onion, tomato and cumin in the air, chili lovers, judges, cooks and volunteers began the 2015 High Sierra Regional Chili Cookoff on Saturday in Carson City with plenty of sizzle. The cookoff and tasting goes until 5 p.m. Saturday and will continue Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. at Glen Eagles Restaurant.

The Honor Flight Nevada 2015 trip was the first all Vietnam Veteran Honor Flight trip in the country. Honor Flight Nevada's Vietnam Project, a plan that was nearly two years in the making, boarded more than 40 veterans of the Vietnam War and support staff on an airplane early Friday morning where they will spend the weekend in Washington, D.C.

Honor Flight takes veterans of World War II and the Korean War on all-expense-paid trips to Washington, D.C. Friday's group of veterans marks the first Nevada Honor Flight with veterans from the Vietnam War. The Veterans will visit those memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifice.

Nevada law firm Kaempfer Crowell will present a $3,500 donation on Friday to Honor Flight Nevada, a non-profit organization dedicated to transporting veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit memorials honoring their service and sacrifices. Lots of shady trees, a nice gentle breeze and plenty of ice cold beer were enough to keep the heat down a notch Saturday at the High Sierra Regional Chili Cook-Off and Craft Fair in Carson City.

The two-day event at Glen Eagles Restaurant, which continues through Sunday, has brought dozens of the best chili cookers from around the region hoping for a chance to win prize money, bragging rights and a trip to Las Vegas for the World Chili Cook-off Championship. The public is invited to Sunday's event and sampling costs next to nothing, organizers said.

Veterans From Honor Flight Nevada, Visit Naval Academy

“It’s really great to be able to see all of this,” the 88-year-old of Dayton, Nev. said. “If I had to do it all over, I’d join the Navy and go to the academy.”

Car Show Sunday at Michael Hohl Motors to raise money for Honor Flight program

The organization that sends local World War II veterans to Washington, D.C. to see the monuments built in their honor will hold a car show Sunday in Carson City.

Honor Flight Nevada offers the free car show at Michael Hohl Motors at 3700 South Carson Street in Carson City from 9am to 2pm. It's $25 to get in and includes entry, a t-shirt, lunch and a dash plaque.

A Hero's Welcome: Honor Flight Returns to Reno

"A trip of a lifetime" and "Hard to explain" were some of the ways veterans described their trip to the nation's capital as they landed in Reno Sunday afternoon.
Honor Flight Nevada returned 33 veterans to Reno after taking them to Washington D.C.to view their respective memorials.
Honor Flights have transported veterans to the nation’s capital since 2005. Honor Flight is a non profit organization dedicated to helping veterans visit their respective memorials, including the National World War II Memorial.
