The Dayton Farmers Market has opened for the 2018 summer season. The market takes place every Saturday through September from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 60 Second Avenue and Highway 50.

The Carson City Airport was ready for take-off Saturday, celebrating its 90th anniversary and annual Fly In Open House event.

CARSON CITY — With a theme "The NexGen of Aviation is You" the 2018 Carson City Airport Open House looks to the skies to celebrate the future this Saturday, June 23. The free community, family-friendly event draws thousands of visitors annually, where airplane and aircraft enthusiasts gather to learn about aviation and aerospace related careers.

There is quite a bit to look forward to today, not to mention this coming weekend. The Rockabilly Riot roars into town and sets up shop at Mills Park for a whole weekend of vintage rat-rods and rock-n-roll. You’ll find the Extreme Motor Officers Challenge in the park, too, so expect it to be noisy. The Pony Express rides again, as it does every year, and retraces its historic route. Keep an eye out this evening for the rider heading east. Enjoy some blues, funk and rock courtesy of the Mylo McCormick Project at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park as part of their annual summer music series.

She’s a grand ole flag, and there will be two ceremonies to recognize the stars and stripes in Carson City today. At 10 a.m. you can join the Nevada National Guard at the Veterans Memorial on the Capitol Grounds for presentation of the colors, speakers, and even cake for the US Army’s anniversary. You’ll find the Elks Club honoring our flag at 3 p.m. The public are invited to both events. The Army isn’t the only birthday you’ll find today; Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery celebrates its seventh year with an artist reception and new work from Denise Jenkins.

The Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada will offer free admission to all visitors on Saturday, June 23. This free day is being offered courtesy of Carson City Toyota, the June Sponsor of the Month at the Museum. Visitors to the Museum that day can engage in a number of hands-on activities, including, musical instruments, a jungle gym and numerous interactive games, as well as engage in art activities and science learning opportunities.

CARSON CITY — Motherhood inspired Maria Royce to become a teacher. Western Nevada College’s partnership with Nevada State College made those dreams come true without having to place any hardship on her family to realize that goal.

CARSON CITY — More than 200 Carson Middle School future Health Occupations Students of America earned real-world healthcare certifications. Nearly all the students taking Ms. Victoria Jaacovi’s Introduction to HOSA class and Mr. Dayne Carmichael’s Sports Medicine class finished the 2018 school year certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, also known as CPR.

CARSON CITY — If you’ve always wanted to have your photo taken with a giant doll, set aside some time this Saturday. The Nevada State Museum and the Carson Doll Club are teaming up with exhibits and hands-on activities for all ages in celebration of World Doll Day. That includes an area where you can have your photo taken with a giant doll.

School is out in Carson City and the summer wasted no time in getting started with the fun stuff. Head down to Mills Park sometime this weekend to enjoy the Nevada State Fair, Rendezvous and Carnival. Carson Valley Days is an annual tradition for those who live in the Minden/Gardnerville area. Lampe Park will be hopping with live music, activities, and another carnival. You’ve probably noticed the very large tent erected by the Carson Mall. The Ramos Bros. Circus has come to town, and will be offering performances daily for the next 10 days. Read on, this is just the beginning.

Break up the middle of the workweek with something fun. If karaoke is your thing, then head to the Westside Pour House. Like to dance? Then Country/Pop night at the Eleventh Frame Lounge in Carson Lanes is right up your alley. Get some jazz in your soul at Living the Good Life. WEDNESDAY, June 6: Things to do in Carson City

Carson City's Karson Kruzers are busy these days getting into gear for their 33rd annual Run What Cha Brung car show, to be held on July 27-28.

Let’s try this again. Last week, the rain was a little too much for the Westside Cruise, so the organizers postponed it until today. The annual Westside Cruise ia a part of Bike Month, and one of the zanier events. Dress you and your bike up and head off to explore the historic district. Happy one year Anniversary to Battle Born Social. The restaurant and lounge will be celebrating with cocktails, appetizers and more; there is a $20 cover for the event, but that money will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada and Carson City Senior Center's Meals on Wheels program.

UPDATE: WESTSIDE CRUISER RIDE POSTPONED UNTIL THUR 5/31 at 5:30 pm With severe thunderstorm warnings and a flood watch in effect, I feel that it is safer to err on the side of caution. We will hold the ride next week same place and time (BAC 5:30 pm), just one week later (Thur 5/31).

The 20th Anniversary Senior Celebration will be held today in the Carson Nugget; free for all to attend, you’ll have the chance to visit a variety of booths with information and resources. After yesterday’s freakish hailstorm, we may as well be ready for anything. More thunderstorms might be on the way this afternoon, but I can’t promise they follow any kind of schedule. The first of the season Third Thursday Wine Walk in downtown Gardnerville is this afternoon, and you may want to bring an umbrella as you sip and stroll.

Bike Month in Carson City always brings fun community activities, including the annual Celebrity Invitational Bike Ride. Strap on a helmet and join some of our town’s notables on a ride through the historic west side. Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery is holding a reception for Jean Kvam, whose oils, pastels, and pottery will be on prominent display. The Historical Societies in Dayton and Douglas County are hosting lectures this evening: you just have to decide between learning about the Nevada Women’s Project or artist Hans Mayer Kassel.

You may have noticed a few blue porch lights in your neighborhood; it’s a way to offer support for our local law enforcement officers. Today, those who have lost their lives in the line of duty will be honored at the Law Enforcement Memorial on the Nevada Capitol grounds with a ceremony, presentation of the colors, and taps.

The Nursing program at Western Nevada College is one of the state’s best. Attend today’s informational meeting and walk away knowing everything you’ll need to do for a career in the medical field.

Hold onto your hat, Carson City, we’re in for one heck of a weekend. It’ll be cowboy hats and pioneer bonnets in Genoa for Western Heritage Day. Keep an eye out for Mark Twain, plenty of music, and fun for all. Leis are the preferred accessory for Lei Day at the Nevada State Museum where you’ll be treated to Polynesian surprises and free admission. The Carson City Symphony’s Youth Strings Ensemble takes to the stage today for their spring concert, Music is for Life (Goes to the Movies), where you will hear them perform selected scores from our favorite cinema classics like James Bond and the Sound of Music. Teens can learn more about Geology during today’s STEM program at the Carson City Library, and those with a Sewing Certification can join in today’s workshop and walk away with a handy zippered bag.

Nevada agencies and organizations have worked hard to spread awareness of archaeological and historic preservation efforts throughout the Silver State, encouraging both residents and visitors to explore and learn about Nevada’s significant archaeological and historical treasures.

I think we are all ready for some warmer, sunny days. Western Nevada College is hosting a reception for the student artists whose work is now adorning their gallery walls, go take a gander. You’ll probably want to layer up if you join Muscle Powered on today’s hike from Ash Canyon to Kings Canyon. It might be a little chilly, but the views of our valley are worth it.

Milton Chen, 65, recently started taking jazz piano lessons. He’s learning from an instructor as well as from an app and other online sources.

Well, so much for spring. Stay warm today as the wind whips into town. It’s National Library Week, and the Carson City Library isn’t shirking its duties with the Lego Club, Story time, and a sewing class in its Makerspace all happening today. They have also brought in renown speaker, author, and innovator Milton Chen to lead a panel discussion on education inside of the Brewery Arts Center’s Performance Hall.

CARSON CITY — More than 115 Carson High School Career and Technical Education, Health Occupations Students of America shined in the Nevada State Leadership Conference held at the Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks, Nev. last month. More than 1,000 students from across the state of Nevada competed in more than 40 medical competition events.

Join the fun as we capture the water quality of the Tahoe Truckee Watershed through this hands-on monitoring event. Meet at Lake Tahoe Community College Student Center Saturday, May 19 at 9 am. Teams led by trained team leaders will then go out to local streams and rivers throughout South Tahoe to collect data to create a snapshot in time of water quality. The data collected can be used for restoration projects and overall watershed protection.

Wear layers, sunglasses, sun hat and sunscreen. Be prepared to possibly wade in the water. Bring a reusable water bottle.

Break a leg, Carson High Drama. Tonight, is opening night for their spring musical, The Secret Garden. There’s something special going on at Carson High for our community members over 50: the annual Senior/senior Friendship Prom is free to attend and a great reason to dress to the nines. Sportsman’s Warehouse celebrates ‘Ladies Night’ with raffles, games, and giveaways. The Friends of the Carson City Library have invited local author Ron Bell to the Browsers Corner Book Store for a special meet and greet and book signing.

River Wranglers (RW), a youth-oriented watershed education organization based in Carson City, has just wrapped up its fall season.

RW’s Education and Outreach Coordinator Julia Keane led students through different programs that focus specifically on the Carson River Watershed.

Keane came on board in October of 2017 as an AmeriCorps Member from the Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps Partnership (SNAP).
