Carson City Sheriff's Office 'Cops and Kids' Open House set for May 17

The 11th annual Carson City Sheriff's Office "Cops and Kids" Open House, billed as the "Safest Street Party in Carson City," will be Saturday, May 17, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the sheriff's office, 911 East Musser Street.

The free community event features, activities, ID kits for children, food, music, games and more.

On hand will be the sheriff's office K9 dogs, motorcycle patrol unit, Special Enforcement Team, stellar squad, a new SWAT unit, representatives from DARE, and the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Plastic bag ban begins in South Lake Tahoe

A ban on single use plastic bags is now the law in the city limits of South Lake Tahoe, Calif. Local grocery stores have been preparing for the new ordinance that was approved Oct. 15, 2013 by the South Lake Tahoe City Council.

Mike Schouten, who with his wife Kim own the South Lake Tahoe Grocery Outlet, says they have been prepping their cashiers on how to present the lack of plastic bags to their customers. They've also been communicating with their customers as to what to expect so no one will be surprised on their next shopping trip.

Student youth group gives Carson City Grocery Outlet a helping hand

Grocery Outlet in Carson City was given a helping hand this week when youth members of Carson River Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teamed up to help staff cleanup after the store closed. The youth group meets weekly to learn, have fun and often to provide community service.

Carson City schools, law enforcement recognize national Red Ribbon drug awareness campaign

The Carson City School District and Carson City Sheriff’s Office are partnering together to prevent substance abuse by celebrating National Red Ribbon Campaign the dates of October 21-31, 2013.

The Red Ribbon Campaign was started by the family of fallen D.E.A. Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena after he died in the line of duty. This national event was later recognized by the United States Congress and has since become the nation’s largest substance abuse prevention awareness campaign with an estimated 80 million Americans participating annually.

Carwash Fundraiser to support Carson Middle School Band

Please come down to the Grocery Outlet parking lot and get your car washed on September 21st from 9AM-1 to support the Carson Middle School Band. They will be performing in a band compition in Southern California and need the community's help in getting there to play. Last year they took first place in the Northern California competion! Come support the CMS advanced band! Tickets are $5.00 a car. All proceeds will go directly to the CMS band.

Food and clothing drives on Saturday to benefit Carson City families in need

A food drive that brings federal employees together to collect food for those hungry in Carson City will be held Saturday following a successful event last weekend that netted more than 700 pounds in donations. Also underway Saturday is a clothing drive for families in need at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The “Feds Feed Families” drive will have a booth and food drop-off area at Grocery Outlet, 1831 North Carson Street this Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Carson City celebrates National Night Out with new community initiatives

Carson City neighbors by the thousands gathered Tuesday evening at Mills Park for the 11th annual National Night Out.

The themes for the evening were community and neighborhood partnership and outreach. Judging by attendance, it was one of the largest gatherings thus far for the annual summer event, hosted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

"The turnout is one of the biggest I've seen," said DARE officer Lisa Davis, a coordinator of the event. "It says a lot about our citizens who have come together for a cause we all want: A safe and healthy community."

With neighborhood outreach as the theme, Carson City Sheriff's Office organizers say the National Night Out event at Mills Park on Tuesday will also highlight a number of new community wide initiatives.

The event runs from 5 to 8 p.m. and brings thousands of Carson City residents to the park annually in a open house environment, providing partnerships between law enforcement and the community. In Carson City, this event represents the culmination of efforts made to address crime, drugs, and violence and is the largest event of its kind in the area.

“Feds Feed Families” a food drive to benefit the hungry in our community has kicked off again for the summer. In Carson City, federal employees from USDA Rural Development, the Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Federal Highway Administration, and the U.S. Geological Survey will be volunteering and collecting donated food in front of Grocery Outlet, at 1831 N. Carson, on Aug. 3 and Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each day. Grocery Outlet owner Dave Cox provides discounts on purchases for food drives.

Saddle Up For KIds Event a Success

Food For Thought would like to think all the people who came out and supported us at our Saddle Up For Kids Events. Friday, June 28th’s dinner at the Governor’s Mansion and Saturday, June 29th’s Carnival at Mills Park wouldn’t have been as successful if not for our volunteers!

Carson City Cops and Kids open house lives up to its 'safest party on the street' reputation

With sunny skies, a gentle breeze and plenty of children and their parents, the 10th annual Cops and Kids open house, hosted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office on Saturday, lived up to its reputation as the safest party on the street.

More than 2,000 attended the four-hour event, which featured games, prizes and demonstrations by Carson City Sheriff's Office patrol officers and personnel. The event is designed for children and their parents to get quality meet-and-greet face time with law enforcement personnel.

Carson City National Night Out recognized for community participation

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office received an early Christmas present after being notified it has received national "Outstanding Citizen Participation” recognition for its 2012 National Night Out crime, drug and violence special prevention event held in August.

Nevada Day events continue Sunday at Mills Park and Legislative Mall with free concert

Nevada Day festivities continue in Carson City through Sunday, today, with the RSVP Carnival and the Battle Born Celebration at Mills Park, a free symphony concert at the Legislative Mall and Halloween festivities.
The salute to America's military "past, present and future" is the theme of this year's statehood events. Featured at the park is the traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall, living history re-enactments, tributes and military honors and static displays. Go here for more information.

Carson City Sheriff’s Office will host the 8th Annual Cops and Kids Sheriff’s Open House safety, crime and substance abuse awareness fair today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, 911 E. Musser Street. Cops and Kids Sheriff’s Open House was started by Sheriff Ken Furlong as part of the community policing efforts implemented by his administration.

Heavenly snowboard team hosts March 11 rail jam

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will host the Shredtacular Rail Jam event at the American Legion in South Lake Tahoe on Friday, March 11 from 4:30 to 10 p.m.

Open to skiers and snowboarders of all ages, the Shredtacular will be held on a feature built by Rob Giustina of On Course Events. Entry is $20 and includes a goodie bag and a raffle ticket for a chance to win tons of prizes.

Carson City Sheriff's Office receives award for 'National Night Out'

(Press release) On January 5, 2011 Carson City Sheriff’s Office received a national award for “Outstanding Citizen Participation” for the 2010 National Night Out special event hosted in August. National Night Out heightens crime and drug prevention awareness, community safety and, as in the case of Carson City, strengthens police-community partnerships. This award is the latest in the list of recognitions Carson City Sheriff’s Office received for the 2010 event including Congressional Awards from Congressman Dean Heller and a Letter of Commendation from Senator John Ensign.

Dayton Food Pantry at Community Center on Dec. 16

With the big distribution day for the holidays on Thursday, Dec. 16, the Dayton Food Pantry will operate that day only from the Dayton Community Center at 170 Pike Street from noon to 5 p.m.

With unemployment in Lyon County at nearly 20 percent, donations are especially welcome this holiday season, explained Freida Carbery, director for the Pantry.

On the other days of December, the Food Pantry will be open for emergency food needs as usual, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4 Enterprise Way and Highway 50 (east of Smith’s Grocery) Monday through Friday.

Hundreds of families making up, perhaps, several thousand people, gathered Tuesday night at Mills Park in Carson City to attend the region's largest public safety event, the 27th annual National Night Out.

Business growth picks up on South Carson

We had heard rumors of recent activity at the never-opened Sportsman's Warehouse store in the Southgate Center on South Carson Street.

And now, it looks like there will be a new Big Lots store moving in this fall.

While a discount closeout store isn't exactly the kind of high-end (or medium-end) store residents might have been hoping for, it's better than an empty storefront.
