Family events are the highlight of Mother's Day weekend in Carson City as the Nevada state capital adds motherhood to its continuing celebration of spring.

This weekend is for all of the moms out there, and the dads that are also moms, and the women who hold a special place of honor in our hearts. SATURDAY:

The community is invited to the annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale, hosted by The Greenhouse Project, Saturday, May 13, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Carson High School in Carson City.

A new restaurant is opening in downtown Carson City, according to reports from the Reno Gazette-Journal and Nevada Appeal.

The Union — a partnership of Reno-based investors — is scheduled to open this summer at 302 North Carson Street, site of the old Lake Tahoe Brewing Company, which closed in January 2016 ahead of its owner Michael Candelario's arrest on fraud charges.

Carson High School students worked tirelessly over the previous eight months to prepare for Carson City community volunteers, many of them CHS graduates who completed the Senior Project themselves, to evaluate both their portfolios and their speeches to be delivered Saturday.

Carson Tahoe Health, a leading healthcare system in Northern Nevada, and The Greenhouse Project, an agricultural and education-based nonprofit, announced an expanded partnership Thursday to build the Foothill Garden on Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center’s campus.

In observance of National Public Health Week, agency and organization representatives in Carson City worked together to compile a video that voices how we all contribute to the health and well-being of our beautiful city.

The ninth annual Concert Under the Stars, A Benefit for The Greenhouse Project featuring The Family Stone and Lydia Pense and Cold Blood, takes place Wednesday, July 12 at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King St., Carson City, Nev.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Sly & The Family Stone, and the 10th year of the The Greenhouse Project operations.

The Greenhouse Project hosts its annual Spring Plant Sale, Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Carson City. Be the first in your neighborhood to have a fresh spinach salad this spring.

Spring has sprung, but apparently Mother Nature didn’t get the memo. Join the Carson Victory Rollers at the Carson Mall and take part in an indoor wine walk and rummage sale. Help Hot Spot Yoga and Fitness for Life celebrate their grand opening with free classes, health vendors, a 5K run, and more. Hit the dance floor with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club; their monthly dance party is held in the Grand Ballroom of the Brewery Arts Center. The Family Stone band, founded by musical legend Sly Stone, will headline the 2017 Concert Under the Stars sponsored by the Cafe at Adele's on July 12 at the Brewery Arts Center's Minnesota Street Stage, said Adele's co-owner Charlie Abowd.

The Carson High School winners of the Shark Tank competition are in with amazing new ideas for start-up companies and new inventions of products, not to mention the monetary winnings that allow these aspiring entrepreneur-contestants to take the next step in the process of starting their own businesses or inventing and marketing their new products.

Western Nevada College Specialty Crop Institute will offer The Lean Farm Workshop on Saturday, March 25, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the WNC Carson City campus, 2201 W. College Parkway. Cost is $35 if registered by March 17 and $40 after this date. Registration includes “The Lean Farm” book and lunch.

This year’s Winterfest theme is hanging out with Harry Potter, and the plan is to turn CHS into Hogwarts with teachers creating a Hogwarts’ themed door followed by a door decorating contest.

I have often written that I find the world of insects and arachnids fascinating. This comes from the person who as a child was terrified of spiders. However, my fear disappeared and my appreciation grew once I starting studying them. I thought I would finish out the year discussing a new critter, well new to me anyway.

Students finding their future careers before they have even graduated from high school has been an evolution in the making and who would have thought?

However, between Carson High School’s Senior Project graduation requirement, made possible by the generous working community of Carson City, the myriad of old and newly formed clubs offered to the students of Carson High, and on-site income earners like The Greenhouse Project, not to mention the Career and Technical Education Jump Start program offered through Western Nevada College, students are figuring out quickly that high school is not the end of their education before starting a career, it is where they may actually begin their careers.

“Honestly, we didn’t know until last spring about The Greenhouse Project even though the facility is on campus,” said Shaylin Segura, who with fellow Carson High School senior Sophie Waite, have for their Senior Project endeavored to raise community awareness about and $5,000 for The Greenhouse Project.

More than 64,000 students are expected to gather this week in Indianapolis for the national Future Farmers of America convention, competing in a multitude of events, and Carson High School CTE student, Holly Strasser, 17, will be one of only 52 students to compete in extemporaneous speaking at the event.

Tickets are now on sale for the annual Celebrity Chef and Harvest Dinner, which takes place Nov. 7 at Cafe at Adele’s. This is one of three fundraisers conducted each year for The Greenhouse Project, whose mission it is to continue “growing a greener and healthier community,” according to Karen Abowd, board president, who co-owns Cafe at Adele’s with her husband, Chef Charlie Abowd.

In this week's edition of It's Your City, host Cortney Bloomer features Cory King of the Greenhouse Project who discusses the nonprofit program that provides school students opportunities to grow garden vegetables. The Greenhouse Project also donates produce to nonprofit food banks.

Teachers and students at Carson High School are teaming up to accomplish some amazing community projects throughout Carson City and beyond. One of Carson High School’s own counselors, Nicki Hendee, along with CHS teacher Angila Golik and her honors government class, and a host of local businesses offering support, are collecting anything and everything to do with, of all things, diapers.

The Greenhouse Project board would like to thank the Carson City community and the surrounding areas for their support for the 8th annual Concert Under the Stars, which featured Tower of Power and The Rowan Bros.

Carson City showed its groove and then some Thursday night when Tower of Power and opening act The Rowans took the stage for a sold out performance at Cafe at Adele's. The summer Concert Under the Stars was the eighth of its kind, a fundraiser for the Carson City Greenhouse Project.

If you hear some great music downtown, then you’re probably near Café at Adele’s. Tower of Power hits the stage for the annual Concert Under the Stars to benefit the Greenhouse Project. Grab some grub for a good cause at Buffalo Wild Wings: LBL Equine Rescue is holding a fundraiser. Take an easy ride with Muscle Powered; tonight’s ride is perfect for beginners. If you’ve got kids, Frozen is tonight’s choice for the Carson Library movie night. Classic car aficionados should head to Bully’s if they want to join in this week’s Silver Dollar Cruise Night.

THURSDAY:

One night each year, John Street, adjacent to Cafe at Adele’s in Carson City is transformed into an intimate music venue for Concert Under the Stars, and for a few precious moments the air is filled with great music, a lot of love and laughter in order to raise money that continues the The Greenhouse Project’s mission of educating the next generation of farmers and feeding the under served in the community.

Carson City has had the pleasure of welcoming Rowan brothers, Lorin and Chris over the years as they’ve played at Cafe at Adele’s. This year is no different, but with one exception: In addition to opening Concert Under the Stars, A Benefit For The Greenhouse Project, Thursday, July 14, The Rowans also play at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 13, on the veranda.
