Good News

Sunny skies Christmas Day through weekend for Carson City and Sierra

Conditions are expected to remain dry for the remainder of the week, which means excellent holiday travel in the Sierra and western Nevada, but no help for our snow pack.

The good news for skiers and boarders headed to Lake Tahoe resorts is that the snow that fell earlier this month along with the cold weather days, plus snowmaking, has allowed for top to bottom conditions at most resorts. High temperatures for the Lake Tahoe basin will be in the low to mid-40s Christmas Day through Sunday.

Carson City jobless rate falls to 9.1 percent in November, statewide drops to 9 percent

The jobless rate in Carson City fell to 9.1 percent in November, part of an overall trend statewide for the month where Nevada’s unemployment rate fell to 9 percent, down from 9.3 percent in October, making it the most significant improvement in the unemployment in a year, according to the state's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

Snow by Thursday morning could make for difficult commute in Carson City, Reno

Layers of ice remaining on some of Carson City's side streets and walkways will see more snow added to them by Wednesday night and Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Carson City could get anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of snow when another cold front approaching from the north will drop temperatures and flakes overnight Wednesday into early Thursday morning.

Don Q's Nevada and northern California fishing report for week of Dec. 11-17

Here's this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, northern California and the Sierra, including Lake Tahoe.

Your best bet, at least for now, is to stay off any ice until it is determined the ice is thick enough to hold human weight. Ice fishing reports should trickle in over the coming weeks. This report is for the week of Dec. 11-17.

Column: End of Year Tax Planning

Well Howdy folks! I sincerely hope you all had a GREAT Thanksgiving! We do have so much to be thankful for.

One of the things I am thankful for is that we have finished updating all our office computers operating system to a newer version of “doors” (not the real name to protect the innocent). I haven’t noticed any improvement in productivity yet though. (I thought new computer stuff always meant new tools that make us more productive.

Tree permits at Lake Tahoe sell out; permits available at nearby Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest

There was a run on Christmas trees in the Lake Tahoe Basin over Thanksgiving weekend. The bad news is that all 2,500 permits were snagged and there won't be anymore issued between now and Christmas.

The good news is nearby Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, which has 5,000 permits this season, continues to sell them at a rapid clip, Forest Service officials said.

Carson City's October jobless rate increases to 9.6 percent

While state jobless figures went down for the month, the October unemployment figures in Carson City increased to 9.6 percent, up from from September’s 9.4 percent.

"Carson City's economy still struggles and has lost 700 jobs or -2.5 percent relative to one year ago," according to Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation Labor overview.

Lake Tahoe leaders hail House introduction of Restoration Act

The reauthorization of the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act was introduced Thursday in the U.S. House of Representatives, following the Senate’s introduction of the bill in August.

The legislation, sponsored by Nevada Congressman Mark Amodei, co-sponsored by California Representative John Garamendi, and Nevada Representatives Joe Heck, Dina Titus, and Steven Horsford, would continue another 10 years of federal government investment in the Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program.

Outdoors with Don Q: A few more days left to fish many California waters

This is my annual reminder that many California waters will close to fishing on Friday, November 15. So if you want to fish any of them, you better hustle because you are rapidly running out of time.

Those waters will not re-open until the last Saturday in April next year (April 26, 2014), and that is a long, long time to wait to wet your line. Here is a partial list of some of the nearby waters that will be closing:

ANGEL LAKE, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (http://www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing varies from day to day, with some days being good, while others being slow. Best time of day is from about 6:00 am to 10:30 am and then again after the shadows start to hit the water in late afternoon.
Best conditions seem to be with a 5 to 10 mph breeze, putting a small chop on the water.
A few fish are being taken with small dry flies, mostly yellow in color, but most of the luck is still coming with nymphs below an indicator or dry fly.

Wet weather provides temporary relief from wildfire danger

This cooler, wetter weather is a bit of good news, bad news for firefighters. Of course, the moisture is great, but as we saw just this weekend, any lightning storms that pop up can easily spark fires in our area.

Firefighters say they welcome the moisture because it does reduce the risk of wildfire but admit it just buys them some time before it gets hot and dry.
