The spring thaw has arrived, and my event list is getting longer. Carson City has some fun stuff happening this weekend, so please take a look. If you haven’t made it to see Wild Horse Children’s Theater’s production of Disney’s The Aristocats, Kids, or the Carson High spring musical, ‘Kiss Me, Kate.’ what are you waiting for? Keep your eyes peeled for Girl Scouts, this is the last weekend of cookie sales.

Dog Scout bell ringers to be at Smith's in Gardnerville Saturday

The Salvation Army 4 legged bell ringers are returning to Smith’s in Gardnerville this Saturday Dec. 5. Dog Scouts of America’s Nevada Chapter will be out from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Salvation Army recruits dog scout bell ringer for Saturday kettle campaign

The Salvation Army has some unique bell ringers out at Smith’s in Gardnerville this Saturday. Dog Scouts of America’s Nevada Chapter will be ringing bells with a little help from some K9 friends from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Dog Scout Trace, the black lab, from the video below will be bell ringing. Trace is a scout in Dog Scouts of America. DSA is a program similar to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts only for dogs. Dogs can earn badges for different service projects that they are involved in. Trace can earn a badge for his service project as a bell ringer.

Senator Square: Carson High celebrates 20th annual Holiday Craft Fair this weekend

Carson High’s 20th annual Holiday Craft Fair is Friday, Nov. 21 from 5 to 8p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will be the best one yet with lots of new vendors as well as all your favorites. Come spend some time – great food, entertainment, a raffle, Santa, book sale, and of course, amazing and unique gifts for everyone. Admission for adults on Friday evening is only $2 and includes a raffle ticket as well as re-entry privileges on Saturday.

'One Kind Cookie' campaign aims to inspire acts of kindness with Girl Scout Cookies

Think Kindness and Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada are teaming up to take on bullying by inspiring more than 500 acts of kindness in the month of March, and they’re asking the community to join the cause. It’s simple:

Carson City's Karen Abowd, Mary Fischer honored with Girl Scouts of Sierra Nevada Triumphant Award

Carson City residents Karen Abowd and Mary Fischer, will be honored tonight at The Atlantis Hotel and Casino, when they receive the Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada’s 2013 TRIUMPHANT Awards.

Karen Abowd will receive the Environmental Leader award for her work with The Greenhouse Project, a non-profit community greenhouse located on Carson High School’s campus that teaches sustainability and new agricultural principals and produces food for the community. Mary Fischer will receive the Community Service award for her work with Gardeners Reclaiming Our Waysides (G.R.O.W.), a non-profit she founded in 1997 with the purpose of beautifying area roadways using landscaping and art.

Carson City nonprofit that helps poor hosts major fundraiser at Nugget Thursday; tickets available

Having fed and provided shelter for the poor and indigent for more than 30 years, the Carson City nonprofit agency FISH is asking Carson City residents, public officials and private citizens to a special dinner on Thursday, March 14.

Carson City FISH to host annual 'Have A Heart' Banquet March 14

Carson City's nonprofit agency that helps feed and provide shelter to those in need — FISH — will host its annual “Have A Heart” Banquet on Thursday, March 14. The Banquet will be at the Carson Nugget with cocktails and silent auction beginning at 5:30 p.m. and dinner served at 6:15 p.m. Ninety-five percent of FISH’s funding comes from local donations and the Have A Heart Banquet is an important part of our fundraising effort.

Carson River Cleanup on Saturday

The banks of the Carson River through Carson City are up for a good scrubbing on Saturday, Sept. 15. As part of the 19th annual National Public Lands Day, the Carson River Cleanup, hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Carson City and the Bureau of Land Management, will focus on areas around Brunswick Canyon and Prison Hill Recreation area.
To get in on the cleanup, meet at the BLM-Carson City District Office's west parking lot, located at 5665 Morgan Mill Road at Deer Run Road, three blocks south of U.S. Highway 50 on the east side of Carson City along the Carson River, at 8 a.m.

Carson High team wins FIRST Tech Challenge Championship

Seven teams came the evening before from Utah, Las Vegas, San Diego and Folsom, California to get a jump start on inspections for the 1st ever Northern Nevada regional FIRST Tech Challenge Championship in Carson City.

Girl Scouts 100th Year Birthday Party Bash

Girl Scout Recruitment for Kindergartners thru Third Grade

From June through September, Carson City Girl Scouts will be running a special summer troop for new Daisy and Brownie Girl Scouts, kindergarten through third grade, and their favorite grown-ups. NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet May 14 in Reno

Rev. Onie Cooper and Dr. Milton Glick will be remembered at the Reno-Sparks NAACP's 66th Annual Freedom Fund Awards Banquet on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at the Atlantis Resort in Reno. Reception begins at 6:00 p.m. with dinner at 7:00 p.m. in the hotel's Grand Ballroom.

The keynote address will be delivered by retired City of Reno Assistant Chief of Police Ondra (pronounced like the French "Andre") Berry. He currently serves as a colonel in the Nevada Air National Guard and is a partner in a consulting firm.

Dayton Food Pantry at Community Center on Dec. 16

With the big distribution day for the holidays on Thursday, Dec. 16, the Dayton Food Pantry will operate that day only from the Dayton Community Center at 170 Pike Street from noon to 5 p.m.

With unemployment in Lyon County at nearly 20 percent, donations are especially welcome this holiday season, explained Freida Carbery, director for the Pantry.

On the other days of December, the Food Pantry will be open for emergency food needs as usual, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4 Enterprise Way and Highway 50 (east of Smith’s Grocery) Monday through Friday.

Carson City cleanup on Saturday with National Public Lands Day

Conservation-minded residents, students, family and friends are encouraged to join the annual cleanup along the banks of the Carson River, Brunswick Canyon and Prison Hill Recreation Area on Saturday as part of the 17th National Public Lands Day.
