We are looking for a few great volunteers! CASA of Carson City helped change the stories of more than 100 abused and neglected children last year. As a CASA volunteer, you aren’t just an important piece of that work, you are the heart and soul of what we do!

Hello and welcome! CASA of Carson City is looking for men and women, 21 years of age and older, to volunteer and advocate for children that are currently in foster care.

Until he became a Court Appointed Special Advocate, Eric Stahlman said he didn’t realize his heart needed to grow. He now has more compassion and understanding for kids and parents struggling in the community.

The Carson City School District will transition all secondary students to a Pass/Fail grading system for the second semester of the 2019-2020 school year. The decision comes as principals, instructional leaders, district-level administrators and members of the teachers’ union have discussed the extension of school closures following spring break.

The Carson City School District will host two showings of a 60-minute documentary titled "Screenagers Next Chapter — Uncovering Skills for Stress Resilience" Thursday, Feb. 20, at the Bob Boldrick Theatre in the Carson City Community Center. The two showings, beginning at 5:30 and 7:00 p.m., will be free and open to the public. Parents are encouraged to bring their children.

Nevada Division of Child and Family Services hosted its annual Sweets With Santa Event Saturday, Dec. 14 in Carson City for the area’s foster youth thanks to our local community partners.

Since 2007, Austin’s House has provided emergency shelter and compassionate care for children in Northern Nevada who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. Now, they are looking for motivated community members to join their Board of Directors, to help keep the mission of Austin’s House alive.

Every child needs a hero, but abused children need Superheroes. We’ve heard a million times that kids are sponges, absorbing all that they see and hear. That includes the good, the bad and the ugly. It makes sense that they want to imitate one of the good guys in a show or cartoon. To a child, a superhero is magical. A superhero is powerful! A superhero can help keep them safe.

Every child needs a hero, but abused children need superheroes! Court Appointed Special Advocates, also known as CASA, will hold information hours on Thursday, May 9 and again Thursday, May 16 in Carson City.

Come get your questions answered first and then hang out afterward as new volunteer training will begin. See first hand how the organization works. Both meetings begin at 5 p.m.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Carson City has gone blue with the Pinwheels for Prevention Campaign, a national event hosted by Carson City’s Advocates to End Domestic Violence, and Prevent Child Abuse Nevada.

On Friday, Carson City residents joined together to plant pinwheels across the Nevada Legislature's lawn, in an effort to raise awareness about preventing child abuse.

“The pinwheel is an uplifting reminder of childhood and the bright futures all children deserve,” a spokesperson for the national event said. “We want to reinforce the notion that healthy child development serves as a foundation for both community and economic development.”

Carson City is in the midst of the NEA’s Big Read, with True Grit by Charles Portis at the designated book. Julie Buntin’s tome, ‘Marlena: A Novel,’ is the chosen Nevada Reads book, and Nevada Humanities has brought the author here for a discussion and reading. Find Ms. Buntin at the Nevada State Library and Archives at lunchtime or hear her thoughts at the Minden Library this evening. Keep an eye to the skies if you’re interested in today’s Muscle Powered hikes; they will walk on the indoor track at the Multi-purpose Athletic Center if it’s rainy.

Well, we won’t see any wet stuff today, but the clear skies could mean a nip to the air. You can join Muscle Powered for one of today’s two walks, but I won’t blame you if you’d prefer an indoor activity. Join the Carson Library for coloring night; they have plenty of pictures to choose from. Bobbie Ann Howell is at the center of today’s Artist Reception at the Nevada Arts Council. You’ll hear her discuss her exhibit ‘Vistas and Viewpoints.’ Head down to Pizza Factory to lend a hand to Mark Twain Elementary School: just make sure to mention you are there for the fundraiser.

Eagle Valley Middle School has an award-winning LEGO robotics team, and that extra-curricular falls firmly within the category of ‘STEAM.’ Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math in education is the focus of tonight’s ‘STEAM’ Night, chock-full of demonstrations, activities, experiments, and the aforementioned robots. Carson High’s more musically-inclined students can be found on the stage tonight at the Carson City Community Center for a Musical Theater and Choral Showcase. The Nevada Division of Child and Family Services is holding a foster parent information night on Wednesday, March 7 at Fremont Elementary School from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

You won’t find this Wednesday lacking when it comes to stuff to do, explore, and enjoy. The annual Carson High Talent Show always delights and thoroughly entertains the audience. Comma Coffee is hosting a reception for their newest display, the ‘Break These Chains Live Free’ Art Exhibit, featuring the winning pieces from a high school contest designed to bring awareness to human trafficking. A cute new shop downtown, Rustically Divine, celebrates it’s Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting.

There are not enough foster families in Carson City to meet the need, forcing children to be displaced into other communities — possibly causing further trauma. Information meetings this Wednesday and in March will address the shortage and ways to recruit families wanting to help.

The Children’s Cabinet has reason to celebrate its longstanding work of keeping children safe and families together. The 18th annual Art of Childhood fundraising gala took place Friday, September 16t at the Nevada Governor’s Mansion in Carson City.

Please join us for our 2015 Community Leader of the Year Ceremony and Benefit honoring our First Lady Kathleen Sandoval for her service and dedication to youth and families in Carson City.

First Lady Sandoval has worked as an advocate of foster youth, children and families in-need in Carson City and Northern Nevada. Ron Wood Family Resource Center will honor the First Lady on May 16 from 2pm – 6pm at the Governor’s Mansion.
