Outdoors with Don Q: A special way to celebrate a special day

Elaine and I just returned home from a special way to celebrate a special occasion. March 30 was our 10th wedding anniversary and we had wanted to do something out of the ordinary for that event.

When we were married 10 years ago, we took a 19 day honeymoon in Southeast Asia, which included Hong Kong, China; Singapore, Malaysia; Bangkok, Thailand; and the last eight days at Bali, Indonesia.

Most interesting, we took my new mother-in-law, Mary Bottoms, with us!
I bet that very few of you took your mother-in-law on your honeymoon!

Movie Review: 'The Descendants' offers a fine cast headed by George Clooney

The Academy Award nominated film "The Descendants," now playing at the Fandango Galaxy movie house in Carson City, is a hard-eyed romantic comedy with an ensemble cast headed by George Clooney, the only name star aboard.
Doesn't matter, this is a fine cast from Clooney as Matt King to Judy Greer as Julie Speer, wife of a real estate salesman who … but let's let that wait.
The film opens with a scene of an attractive woman riding a boat. She's laughing in the wind. This is before an of the opening credits. No explanation given or needed.

Lake Tahoe fire agency advises to celebrate the holidays safely

The winter holidays are a time for celebration with family and friends, and that means more cooking, entertaining, home decorating and an increased risk of home fires due to increased usage of cooking and heating equipment. Most home fires and injuries occur in the kitchen as reported by the U.S. Fire Administration. Here are some simple and easy life-saving tips from the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District to remember during the holiday season:

Carson Mall repainting removes last reminders of Gottschalks

The exterior of the Carson Mall has been getting a makeover recently, and today a crew was covering up the remnants of the old Gottchalks sign on the south side of the mall.

This is just one visible change going on at the Carson Mall. There is also work being done to extend the patio outside the Paradise Cove Cafe. In addition, Alie's Flowers is having a grand re-opening tomorrow at 4 p.m. in their new mall location. Last week, Home Treasures had a grand opening in their new location, too. And the new Thai Thai restaurant has been open for a few weeks.

Wildflowers along the Winnemucca Lake Trail

Last week, I wrote about the large snow drifts and huge snow fields that Elaine and I encountered on our hike toward Winnemucca Lake from the top of Kit Carson Pass on California S.R. 88.

Our purpose for the hike was three-fold: To walk on snow (which we did), to photograph some wildflowers (which we did) and to fish for Brook and Kamloop trout at Winnemucca Lake (which we did not, due to too much snow and too much wind).

This week, I am suggesting that you take the time to hike on that same Winnemucca Lake Trail to admire and photograph the wildflowers.

Here’s how to do so:

Outdoors with Don Q: Walking on mid-summer snowdrifts and deep snow fields

With our summer temperatures currently in the 90-100 degree range around Carson City, it is unbearably hot for this poor, sweltering soul.
I am a winter person, not a summer person, and do not like hot weather!
Thank goodness for those of us who live in this part of the United States, we can temporarily escape that miserable summer heat by finding coolness at the higher elevations of our nearby Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Last Wednesday morning (July 20), Elaine and I did just that.

We traveled to Kit Carson Pass on California S.R. 88 with a three-fold purpose in mind:

Fishing Report For the week of July 27 to Aug. 2

Two new restaurants moving into Carson Mall in July

July will be a very busy month at the Carson Mall in Carson City with two new restaurants moving in, two other businesses changing locations, along with a complete repainting of the exterior and an extension of the patio area by Paradise Cove Cafe.

Busy Bee Eatery will be moving from their current location on Winnie Lane to the mall in July, taking over the old deli space on the Carson Street side of the mall. The restaurant features Mexican, Italian and American food, and offers customers the option of dining in, or purchasing pre-made meals that can be prepared at home.

Blooming wildflower beauties

By the Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association
The Shasta Cascade region comes alive this time of year as vibrant blooming wildflowers show off their stunning colors. Thanks to Mother Nature it should be an excellent year for wildflower viewing due to all of the snow and rain fall the area has received. The best time for wildflower viewing is normally during the months of April through June in the lower elevations, and June through August in the higher elevations.
