Fernley man jailed after allegedly crashing stolen truck into State Farm insurance office

A 51-year-old man faces two felony charges after allegedly crashing a stolen truck into a State Farm insurance office in Fernley on Tuesday and then attempting to punch a Lyon County Sheriff's Office deputy.

Michael Shenkel of Fernley is being held on $25,500 bail. According to Lyon County Sheriff Sgt. Ryan Powell, deputies were called at 12:52 p.m. to the State Farm Office Building located at 79 Seventh Street for a report that a vehicle had struck the building.

Motorcyclist shot in the elbow near Lyon County area known for target practice

A motorcycle rider was injured Saturday after being shot in the elbow near the Vine Street race track in Fernley, according to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office.

Three motorcycle riders told deputies they were riding in the desert near the Sarasota Flats dry lake when one of them was shot in the right elbow, sustaining non-life threatening injuries. Sarasota Flats is a common area for target practice, said Lyon County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jeremy Grundy.

A Wind Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for much of Northern Nevada as the front pushes through. Winds will be from the west to southwest, 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph in the western valleys and 60 mph in wind prone areas. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect until 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Northern Nevada man dies in pedestrian accident after being struck by semi on Interstate 80

A 26-year-old Wadsworth man died Thursday night in a pedestrian accident after being hit by a tractor-trailer while attempting to cross Interstate 80 two miles west of Fernley in Storey County, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

Jason D. Gonzalez died after he was struck while being on the right shoulder of the freeway, attempting to cross the eastbound lanes directly in front of the tractor trailer driven by a 57-year-old El Grove, Calif. man, said NHP Trooper Chuck Allen.

Annual Cancer Run, Sponsored by the Sierra Nevada Association of REALTORS® and PrimeLending, Raises $8,000

The 5th Annual Cancer Sucks 5k held last month and presented by The Sierra Nevada Association of REALTORS® and PrimeLending was a huge success! The event brought out over 320 walkers and runners, many adorned in the color pink in honor of breast cancer awareness month. The proceeds from the event totaled close to $8,000 and will benefit local cancer patients through The Carson Tahoe Health Foundation.
