Agency releases draft active transportation plan for Lake Tahoe

Improving transportation options for bicyclists and pedestrians is one of the most effective strategies to conserve and restore Lake Tahoe’s environment, revitalize the economy, enhance recreation opportunities, and improve public health, according to Tahoe Regional Planning Agency officials.

Carson City Ward 2 Supervisor Brad Bonkowski will hold his monthly “Breakfast with Brad” on Friday, Nov. 6, from 7 to 8 a.m. at the Cracker Box restaurant.

All Carson City residents and business owners are invited to attend. “The monthly get-togethers provide me with a great opportunity to get feedback from the people directly impacted by decisions the board makes” Bonkowski said.

“I think it’s extremely important that I stay in touch with our residents, hear their ideas and get their input.”

WNC Marketing Students to Pitch Business Plans at Adams Hub

A Western Nevada College marketing class is taking steps outside the classroom to learn from professionals in the Carson City business community.

Next week, students from Dr. Robert Whitcomb’s Marketing Principles class will pitch their business marketing ideas at the Adams Hub for Innovation, the capital city’s’s small business incubator.

Carson City Connect citizen engagement management app goes live beginning Monday

In Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell’s State of the City speech last January, his theme was “Time for Change” and that we “have not only the opportunity, but in a very real sense, the obligation, to provide and present a face to the world that shows our pride in being the capital of the great state of Nevada.”

Keeping with this bold direction, Carson City announces “Carson City Connect,” a citizen relationship management system that is designed to make it easier to report everything from potholes and abandoned vehicles to get information about different city departments.

Eight Nevada artists earn fellowships from Nevada Arts Council

The Nevada Arts Council has selected eight Nevada artists to receive 2016 Artist Fellowship funding. Four artists were awarded FY16 Artist Fellowships Grants of $5,000, three artists the Fellowship honorable mention awards of $500, and one artist the Artist Fellowship Project Grant of $7,000.

Agencies seek public feedback on Lake Tahoe area land exchange

The public is encouraged to comment on a proposed land exchange of properties in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The California Tahoe Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service plan two open houses to present plans.

The proposal would transfer Forest Service urban lots to the California Tahoe Conservancy, while conveying some larger CTC parcels to the Forest Service.

“The proposed land exchange would increase the effectiveness of our urban lot program in meeting various environmental and public access goals in the Basin,” said California Tahoe Conservancy Executive Director Patrick Wright.

Prioritizing Nevada’s workforce: NV Energy Foundation gives WNC $25,000 grant

Hot August Nights and warm August days have arrived. Beat the heat inside one of Carson City’s many art exhibits. The Nevada Artists Association has just begun their Photography Show. Head over to the Brewery Arts Center to see it. If you haven’t been to the Courthouse lately, Capital City Arts Initiative has done an incredible job of showcasing some of the unseen craftsmanship that our local manufacturers create on a regular basis. You’ll find Industrial Arts on the second floor. The arts meet engineering at the Carson City Library. Students from Harvard and MIT will be on-hand to teach kids about various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) principles as part of the Spokes America Learning Festival.

Carson City inventor creates new product for doing Zumba on carpet

It has been four years since Carson City resident and Zumba instructor Arik Bannister created a product called Zgliderz that allows one's feet to slide more easily on carpeted floors. After getting feedback from customers, he's re-introduced the brand where it will be made available Friday.

WNC receives federal, private grants to fund Applied Industrial Technology Program

Western Nevada College has received a grant to purchase Department of Labor approved equipment, course development, grant management staff assistance to students and program support for the College’s newly expanded Applied Industrial Technology program.

Public Works Storm Water Management Program and Rate Review

Carson City Public Works is reviewing the storm water management program and rates and will have a public discussion with the Board of Supervisors in August.

Prior to that meeting, Public Works is seeking resident input on July 23, 2015, in the Ormsby Room at the Sheriff’s Office (911 E. Musser Street, Carson City, NV 89701). Two meetings will be held: 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Staff will present an overview of the storm water program and is seeking your input on expectations from the program.
