Column: Has City Center been judiciously considered?
Submitted by admin on Mon, 02/13/2012 - 7:07pmA vocal minority’s intermittent cheerleading promotes the massive City Center project. Their objective: replace the city library with a +$75 million, three-times-the-size library complex just east of the Nugget Casino. (The ‘official’ $49 million cost curiously excludes 30 years of interest payments.)
Absent from this well-intentioned, but ill-conceived project are viability, necessity and prudence.
Movie Reivew: 'Immortals' won't live long in movie history
Submitted by admin on Sat, 11/19/2011 - 10:07amSometimes one wonders if casting calls in Hollywood consisted of the males baring pectorals and the women an ability to look good but not have to have any actings skills. And for directors to have a good visual sense but no idea of what a story it supposed to do.
That sentiment is triggered by the movie "Immortals," currently flickering at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City.

Movie Review: 'The Help' a fine and striking summer movie
Submitted by admin on Sun, 08/14/2011 - 6:11pm"The Help," currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, is a welcome relief from such summer films as the ugly "Change-Up." No explosions, no car chases, no exploitive scenes for the teens among us. Instead it's a portrait of life in Mississippi in the 1960s and the near-infinite gap between the whites and their black maids and cooks.
Movie Review: 'Captain America' takes on the bad guys
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 07/27/2011 - 4:37pm"Captain America," subtitled "the First Avenger," currently showing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, is the fourth in the series of related comic book heroes brought to the screen.
And while it does live up to its pulp ancestry with lots of action and fantasy, it reportedly is a 124-minute promotional effort for a film to come, "The Avengers," all four heroes joining to save the world or do other good deeds.
Moview Review: 'X Men: First Class' a hot and heavy fantasy film
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sun, 06/12/2011 - 1:23pmI missed a couple of the "X Man" interations so I can't offer much in the way of comparisons, but world opening audience size was down from the last version. That said, 'X Man: First Class," now screening at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, is a film of its times, a melange of fast cuts, amazing technology which reveals its comic-book birthright with fantasy and some fact.

Movie Review: 'Season of the Witch' could use some MSG
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 1:03pm"Season of the Witch," currently playing at the Casino Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, is a movie that can't decide if it's a thriller fantasy or a buddy picture or a tour through muddled 14th century history. Maybe it's none of the above but instead just a mess.
It starts out with three alleged witches hanged and drowned (talk about overkill!), one of which comes back to do in the priest who condemned the three.
Sharron Angle wants to 'personalize' the VA; what does that mean?
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 10/26/2010 - 11:58pmRarely has a Nevada senatorial race received the nationwide attention this year’s has. Of course, there’s the old pro versus the new pro — Harry Reid and Sharron Angle. Both have been around the barn a number of times, she in the Nevada Legislature and Harry in all kinds of jobs, most currently, of course, Senate majority leader.
Seems a lot of Nevadans are unhappy with Harry, mostly because he is now an insider, carrying out President Obama’s programs as any majority leader would be forced to do if it’s his party in the White House.

'Splice' at the Galaxy a muddled Frankenstein update
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Fri, 06/11/2010 - 8:48pm“Splice,” a 2009 movie that won some independent film awards, is playing at the Carson City Fandango Galaxy for the next couple of weeks, depending on how many people plunk down several dollars to see the film. It’s a sc-fi fantasy outing, with the plot lifted more or less from the Dr. Frankenstein concept of Mary Shelly.
