Good morning Carson City, today is Thursday, Dec. 27, 2018. Even though we've now passed Christmas, (that happened quickly didn't it?) we still have the New Year's holiday ahead. Speaking of the countdown to 2019 we've begun compiling an events listing for New Year's Eve parties around the area.

In the final stretch of the work week, today is Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018. For those keeping score, there are four days of Hanukkah remaining, we are 19 days away from Christmas and 26 days until 2019. Here's what's happening today:

The Carson City Fire Department hosted the Carson City Library Family Storytime Thursday at the main station located at 777 South Stewart Street, featuring a book reading accompanied by interactive activities.

Through a partnership with Northern Nevada Literacy Council, the Carson City Library will be offering a monthly Storytime and Craft.

Each family will receive a free library bag and free book. Each child that is registered will get to participate in an art or science activity.

75 years ago, the USS Nevada was one of the battleships trapped when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. She was the only battleship to get underway during the attack, and according to Naval historian Kermit (Kit) H. Bonner the ship was "the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal and depressing morning" for the United States. Today we remember those lost in that attack, and remember the history behind the battleship that is our battle born namesake. A special exhibit of USS Nevada artifacts, and a lecture on her history are free for all at the State Museum at 1 p.m.

December has arrived and it brings a plethora of holiday cheer. Gardnerville kicks off the weekend of lights with their Heritage Park Tree lighting, caroling, and fireworks. Carson City, Genoa, and Minden follow suit Friday with their own lighting festivities. Karaoke at Living the Good Life and Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar are the perfect place to bust out your rendition of ‘Santa Baby’ or ‘Rockin Around the Christmas Tree.’ Bundle up if you’d care to join Muscle Powered on their easy hike around Riverview Park. Feeling nostalgic? The 20th Anniversary of Space Jam is playing at the Galaxy Theater in case you need a fix of the 90s. Capital City Arts Initiative proudly presents some new art in the Sierra Room of the Community Center. You’ll be able to check out ‘Glyphs and Houses’, a solo exhibition by Amelia Currier during public meetings and on Friday afternoons. For something much more family friendly, a Halloween Party at the Library includes fun crafts and a costume contest. Author Sandie LaNae of Thin Veil Investigators is the featured presenter tonight at Washoe Lake State Park.
