The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District-Sierra Front Field Office is seeking public input through provisions in Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act on a proposal to reduce site safety hazards at the United Comstock Merger Mill at American Flat (AFM) in Storey County, Nevada.

The BLM requests public input on the identification of historic properties and comments on potential effects analyzed in the environmental assessment to the AFM complex relative to regulation 36 CFR Part 800.2(d) and 800.3(e).

A Carson City woman faces a felony charge of battery with a deadly weapon after allegedly backing her vehicle into her boyfriend and dragging him for two blocks as he held on.

Donna Marie Mireless, 41, is being held on $30,000 bail. During a dispute with her fiance of two years, Mireless attempted to leave and backed her vehicle out of the driveway and into her boyfriend, the arrest report stated.

Warming weather and a chance for rain may cause a rise in local streams and rivers but flooding isn't expected, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

A low pressure system is expected to bring rain to the Sierra and Western Nevada through Monday with snow levels around 8,500 feet before falling to 7,000 feet tomorrow night. About an inch of precipitation is expected in the Central and Northern Sierra and about a half inch in Western Nevada.

A national analysis shows Nevada’s growth in personal income was last in the nation during 2010.
The federal government’s Bureau of Economic Analysis today released a report charting personal incomes for all 50 states during 2010.

(Press Release) On Wednesday March 2, 2011, at approximately 12:00 p.m. Lander County Sheriff Ron Urger was notified that a man, later identified as Devin Westenskow, age 28, of Evanston, Wyoming, fell while exploring an abandoned mine shaft. The mine site closed since 1945, is located in the Jersey Valley at the far eastern part of Pershing County, Nevada.

Sen. Harry Reid spoke at a joint session of the Nevada Legislature this morning, asking legislators not to cut education, and to have "an adult conversation" about outlawing prostitution.

I received a call from the Builders Association of Western Nevada this afternoon about a big property tax increase the Carson City Board of Supervisors is going to vote on tomorrow.

The funny thing is, I read through the agenda last week and didn't see it. But it was easy to miss. It is number 15 on the agenda, and the language used gives very little clue as to what it is (the document is attached below).

With falling and blowing snow throughout Northern Nevada earlier today, troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol were kept busy by responding to several calls for service this morning, Trooper Chuck Allen reports.

In a six-hour timeframe between 4 am to 10 am, 19 motor vehicle accidents were investigated, 17 slides-offs or spin-outs were reported and the Department of Public Safety-Communications Center fielded 298 phone calls.

The Carson City and Sierra regions remain under a high wind warning and a winter storm watch tonight as a strong Pacific storm is expected to move into the area. The storm may bring up to 4 inches of snow in the valleys, 1 to 2 feet at the shores of Lake Tahoe and up to 5 feet above 7,000 feet.

In a war of words, critics of Gov. Brian Sandoval’s $5.8 billion budget have lambasted his proposed cuts to K-12, higher education and health and human services.

Until now, tenured faculty at Nevada’s universities have avoided the budget guillotine that has chopped away at the state budget.
They escaped salary cuts during the past session due to rules governing their pay.

Carson City streets seem to be OK so far, but falling temperatures threaten to make them icy as the night progresses.

Up to a foot of snow has fallen in the Sierra today, with chains mandatory on I-80 over Donner Summit from the Nevada-California line to Nyack, and U.S. 50 over Echo Summit. Chains or snow tires are required over Spooner Summit and Kingsbury Grade. Highway 88 is closed west of Kirkwood for avalanche control.

Rain has turned to snow tonight as a strong winter storm continues to bring a mix of precipitation to the Carson City area and heavy snow at Lake Tahoe.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. Monday morning for the Carson City region, while a winter storm warning continues at Lake Tahoe until 4 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Carson City and Carson Valley regions can expect about 2 to 4 inches of snow overnight, while Tahoe is expected to receive several more feet, especially in areas above 7,000 feet.

Earlier Sunday wind and rain caused a number of problems, including downed trees and minor flooding.

At 4:25 p.m., a large tree crashed into two vehicles on Nelson Lane near Bunch Way in Carson City. Tree limbs are reportedly also resting on homes, according to police dispatch. Meanwhile high winds that whipped through the area earlier this afternoon brought down another large tree in the area of Sherman Lane.

Water ponding has been reported throughout town, both the east and west sides, and around Highway 50 near the old Scolari's. Roof leaks have even been reported at the Carson City Sheriff's Office at 911 Musser Street.

Back-to-back weather systems moving into the Carson City area today has prompted the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a winter weather advisory through 3 a.m. Monday morning.

Nevada Highway Patrol troopers have been busy today responding to four dozen motor vehicle crashes on area roads and highways.

Some 47 accidents were reported between 6 a.m. and noon today throughout the Northern Nevada region, said Trooper Chuck Allen.

The accidents happened as a result of falling snow, slippery roadways and motorists traveling too fast for the roadway conditions, Allen said in a press statement. Chainsaws are buzzing around Carson City this morning following Sunday's storm that whipped the area with average wind gusts of 40-plus mph and more than an inch-and-a-half of rain.

The city's public works and road department have been canvassing the town this morning, looking for stray limbs and branches that have covered the roads. Homeowners with chainsaws have been seen hacking up much of the stray branches, which block driveways and straddle fence posts.

Carson City theater lovers have one more chance tonight to enjoy one of the better summer musicals playing in our town.

Former Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn, who guided Nevada from January 1999 through the end of his second term in 2006, died this morning of a heart attack in Las Vegas, according to the Las Vegas Sun.

A vigilant motorist who saw a vehicle drive on a sidewalk and couldn't maintain a single lane of traffic early Wednesday morning resulted in the arrest of a 29-year-old construction worker who faces charges of driving under the influence of prescription drugs.

Saturday will be a new day and a clean slate for the Carson High softball team at the Reed Easter Tournament in Sparks.

The University of Nevada jumped to a 7-1 lead after three innings but was unable to hold the lead, falling 11-7 to New Mexico State in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both schools on Friday in Las Cruces, N.M.

The Carson High baseball team is beginning to figure it out.

Sales tax collections in Carson City plunged again in January, falling 16.2% from January of 2009. Sales tax collections statewide were down 8.1% in January. They were off 4.8% in Washoe County, down 2.2% in Douglas, minus 22% in Lyon and down 12.7% in the Fallon area.

The young and inexerperienced Carson High baseball team looked like, well, a young and inexperienced team.

Water and sewer rate hikes may move a step closer Thursday when the Carson City Board of Supervisors will hear plans to issue up to $32 million in general obligation water bonds over 30 years.
