Carson City set to withdraw opposition on marriage equality issue
Submitted by editor on Mon, 01/27/2014 - 9:11pmAs part of the lawsuit to decide marriage equality in Nevada, the plaintiffs filed suit against the State, Carson City, Clark County and Washoe County. Clark and Washoe counties refused to defend the lawsuit. The State and Carson City prevailed at the Nevada Federal District Court level. As a result, the plaintiffs appealed to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Nevada a Step Closer to Marriage Equality
Submitted by Nevada Media Alliance on Fri, 05/24/2013 - 11:10amMany people filled the Nevada Assembly chambers in Carson City on Thursday as a resolution to repeal a same-sex marriage ban in Nevada passed 27-14, bringing the state one step closer to marriage equality.
Senate Joint Resolution 13 requires that all marriages be treated equally under the law and removes gender from the definition of marriage. It also specifies that religious institutions can choose not to marry couples of the same gender.
Reno residents, Meredith Tanzer, 42, and Yevonne Allen, 28, have followed the measure closely during this session.
Assembly Passes Marriage Equality Resolution 27-14

Ben Kieckhefer. Kieckhefer has declined requests from various media outlets asking him to comment on his position, saying that his vote in favor of the resolution should speak for itself.

Nevada Urges Congress to Finally Pardon Boxer Jack Johnson

On July 4, 1910 Johnson defended his title against former boxing legend James Jeffries in Reno. He won the fight, but the victory ignited race riots all over the country.
Johnson had several relationships with white women, which only added to the outrage over his race. In October of 1912, Johnson was convicted for transferring women across state lines for immoral reasons.

RENO, Nev. — Longtime Nevada civil rights leader Mary Valencia Wilson, 66, died at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno shortly after midnight of Friday, June 10. She suffered from complications after a long battle with cancer.
