Food Drive for Dayton Food Pantry Gets 2017 Off to a Good Start
Submitted by editor on Mon, 01/16/2017 - 11:53amA “Stuff a Police Car with Food Donations” event was held at Smith’s Grocery in Dayton on Jan. 7 for the Dayton Food Pantry.
Alie Trier, Dayton Food Pantry manager, said “I was amazed by all the cases of tuna and soup and other food donated — more than $4,500 worth of food, plus $612 in cash, was donated. We’re grateful for the hard work of Pantry volunteers and the Lyon Sheriff’s Department and the VIPs (Volunteers in Policing), and for the generosity of Smith’s Grocery Store, and residents of the Dayton area. Together, they made this event very successful.”
Free training program for care givers of elderly veterans and others
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 12/28/2016 - 6:18pmThe Nevada Department of Veterans Services will be sponsoring two FREE comprehensive training programs to assist those caring for aging veterans, including those living in eldercare communities.
The programs are called "Bravo Zulu: Achieving Excellence in Relationship-Centered Care." They're designed to give care partners of veterans a better understanding of military culture as well as the influence and impact of military service experiences on the healthcare needs of aging veterans.
Dayton Food Pantry Holiday Hours
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 12/14/2016 - 4:06pmDayton, Nevada – Healthy Communities Coalition’s Dayton Food Pantry, located on Enterprise Way and Highway 50 in Dayton, will remain open during its normal hours of 10a.m. - 4p.m. Monday through Thursday during the holidays.
The distribution of USDA Commodities will continue as normal on the 3rd Saturday of each month at Sutro Elementary from noon to 3pm.
Manager Alie Trier notes that volunteers of all ages are warmly welcomed.

Silver Stage Pantry Holiday Schedule
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 12/14/2016 - 11:13amSilver Springs, Nevada - There will be special holiday events and hours for Healthy Communities Coalition's Silver Stage Food Pantry, located at 3595 Ramsey Weeks Cutoff in Silver Springs. Normally, the Pantry is open Monday through Friday from 10am until 4pm. However, the Pantry will close at noon on Friday December 16th, and at noon on Monday, December 19th. The Pantry will also be closed on Tuesday, December 27th from noon to 2:30pm for a delivery.
'Volunteers in Policing' Make Dayton Food Drive Big Success

Volunteers in Policing, Lyon County Sheriff's Department, Smith's Grocery Store, donors, and community volunteers contributed to the event that resulted in the collection of $480 in cash plus over $700 worth of food items for the Dayton Food Pantry in just 4 hours on July 9th, 2016 at Smith's Grocery.

The Elders need the Young for their Optimism, Hope, and Enthusiasm, to keep them young at heart.
I am a third-generation Carsonite. I remember this city in the 60’s and 70’s. Recently, a gentleman told me this is a senior community, a thought shared by many.
The Lodge Assisted Living Community to sponsor SOLEmates Shoe Drive
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 08/30/2013 - 5:52pmThe Lodge Assisted Living Community in Carson City will again sponsor the SOLEmates Shoe drive this fall to help provide athletic shoes to local students. The second annual event, which runs through September, benefits students enrolled in the Carson City School District’s McKinney-Vento/Children in Transition program.
The grant and donation funded program helps to provide shoes, clothing, hygiene products and school supplies to students who lack a fixed living situation. The program helped nearly 600 students last school year and is expected to help the same number or more this year.
The Lodge to host seminar on veteran’s long-term care benefits

Richard P. Schulze and Melissa Hartman, both experts in veteran’s benefits will explain the VA’s Non Service Connected Disability Pension. Attendees will learn what it is, who qualifies and how to apply.
Nevada advocate for elderly, former Carson City Supervisor Janice Ayres dies
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 05/27/2013 - 11:38pmJanice R. Ayres, a tireless advocate for the elderly and the disabled, an unshakable Democrat and former member of the Carson City Board of Supervisors died Monday morning at Carson Tahoe Hospital after battling cancer. She was 92.
Ayres was the executive director of the Nevada Rural Counties RSVP Program, a position she held since 1979. RSVP Board member Charlie Abowd confirmed her passing and said directors will meet Tuesday afternoon to discuss arrangements.

New Administrator Named at the Lodge Assisted Living and Memory Care Community

Ms. Haack has worked at The Lodge for more than two years as the Wellness Coordinator.
Haack has extensive experience working with elders in the Carson City and Carson Valley areas. Prior to joining the Lodge she worked at the Carson Valley Residential Care Center in Gardnerville for many years and has also worked as a private in home caregiver. She believes that working with elders is a true calling.
The Lodge to Offer Free Respite Care

It’s often difficult for caregivers to find time for themselves and that challenge is compounded during the busy holiday season. Because of that, Lodge employees will offer the free respite help on December 12th and 19th from 11am to 3pm.
Shoe Drive to Benefit The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada

The number of children who need help in Carson City is disproportionately high when compared to other communities of its size. Too many kids don’t have life’s basic necessities; some even tape their shoes to keep them together. The goal of SOLEmates is to acquire 300 pairs of new athletic shoes to help those kids run, play and stay active.
Rombardo to appoint Mark Krueger as Carson City Assistant District Attorney

Rombardo will be appointing Mark Krueger to fill the Assistant District Attorney position vacated by Gardner, according to a news release. Krueger will officially begin his new role as Carson City’s second in charge of the District Attorney’s Office on Sept. 24.

An Exemplary Human Environment Initiative award to NDOT was presented by the Federal Highway Administration for partnering efforts to enhance and preserve the historic cemetery as part of the Carson City Freeway project.
