The Annual Don Q Awards for 2014

As I have done for many years, my last article of the year, each year, is to present the Don Q Awards for a number of different reasons. Those reasons include such assorted things as: Outstanding, memorable, good, not so good, questionable, bad, serious, funny, dumb, head-scratching, are-you-kidding, etc.

These awards are presented to all kinds of people or places or things for what has occurred throughout the year.
It’s a fun way to end the year for yours truly.

So, without further ado, here are the 2014 Don Q Award winners:
Best Birthday Present:

Cold weather meets high energy at Tahoe's SnowGlobe Music Festival

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. — There is so much more to SnowGlobe than the beat of bass heard echoing through the trees across the south shore community. It is much more than a very large group of young people turning out for a three-day outdoor electronic dance music techno concert.
It is an experience.

Topaz Lake to open to fishing on New Years Day

Topaz Lake, which is located along U.S. 395 at the Nevada-California state line, will open its 2015 fishing season, one half hour before sunrise, on Thursday, Jan. 1.

If the weather is decent, if you don't have a massive hangover, if you like to fish and if you don't have anything else planned, this could be a fun way to start the New Year. Bundle up though because daytime temperatures in the area are not expected break 30 degrees.

Outdoors with Don Q: Christmas from our house to yours

Whether you are young or old, Christmas is an enjoyable time of the year. Christmas has always been and will always be very special to me. It has been a holiday occasion that, through the years, our family has enjoyed here in Carson City or at the Quilici Cabin near Davis Lake, Calif.

Letter: Carson City Planning Heroes

Downtown Brewery Renovation

Editor: I have been in the antiques business in Downtown Carson City for more than 15 years. The last six years have been extremely difficult, but perhaps our state may have reached a turning point.

In the last 15 years I have been involved in dozens of community meetings and planning sessions that were generally boring and filled with doomsayers and negativism. I've spent hundreds of hours gnashing my teeth listening to every malcontent in town who says that saving our Downtown is a waste of time and money. They have said it's by-the-way impossible.

Letter to Nevada Republican Assemblymen

MY PERSONAL LETTER TO ALL NEVADA REPUBLICAN ASSEMBLYMEN:It is time to put your priorities, perspectives and pride in order and remember who you work for.Election to the State Legislature is an honor. Many of you had to endure difficult Primary races, followed by difficult General election contests. In the end you prevailed. In the end, Republicans prevailed. Nevada Republicans as a whole prevailed to a degree never seen in our lifetimes.

Outdoors with Don Q: Selected memories from 2014

As I look forward to the year of 2015 with high expectations, hopes and dreams, this is a good time to reflect back on some selected personal memories from the rapidly ending year of 2014.
Here are my top memories of this year, ranging all the way from right here in our very own Carson City to two islands in faraway Hawaii.

Outdoors with Don Q: We're ready for winter, here and there

It's safe to say that we are now ready for winter, here at our home in Carson City and at the Quilici Cabin near Davis Lake in Plumas County, Calif. Forecasters are calling for a winter storm to blow in Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. It takes quite a bit of time and effort, but each year a whole host of activities take place at both locations in anticipation of Old Man Winter's arrival.
Here's what I mean:

SpineNevada Welcomes a New Pain Management and Rehabilitation Physician Assistant

SpineNevada is proud to announce and welcome Amanda Jones, PA-C as the company’s new Pain Management and Rehabilitation Physician Assistant.

Outdoors with Don Q: It's dark and cold in the Far North

This is my annual reminder that November 18 was a significant date in the lives of some 4,212 hardy Alaskans (as of the 2010 census). Those folks live in a unique location known as Barrow, Alaska, which is the northernmost community in the United States.

It is located on the edge of the Arctic Ocean, about 320 miles north of the Arctic Circle, and roughly about 1,300 miles south of the North Pole. On November 18, the sun set below the horizon at Barrow and it will not peek back up over the horizon until January 23 (weather permitting).

Outdoors with Don Q: Ask for snow, wish for snow and pray for snow

No matter how you do it, either by asking, wishing or praying, we need snow. Lots of snow. Feet of deep snow this winter. Elaine and I took a ride last Sunday to take some photos in Alpine County, and we also took our fishing equipment if we decided to fish somewhere.

We were undecided as to where to fish, but thought that we would check out some of the waters along State Route 88 and at other spots. As it turned out, we did not fish and for a darn good reason.

Letter: Should the Ormsby House be operated by computer experts?

To the editor: Read with much interest Mr. John Barrette's Nevada Appeal story about the Ormsby House 15 year rebuilding project. The basic problem seems to be the owners are not hotel industry people. They are computer experts.

Outdoors with Don Q: Browsing favorite websites

As a person who spends a considerable amount of time, each and every day, having fun browsing at a number of internet websites from all over North America, I thought that it might be interesting, and perhaps even informative, to share some of those sites with you.

What Works: Find your strength in adversity through resiliency

Some of the strongest and most successful people in the world are those who have been through hell and back and came out holding the devil’s pitchfork. They took seemingly insurmountable circumstances and turned them around to create life out of destruction.

Outdoors with Don Q: Just a few days left to fish many California waters

This is my annual reminder that many California waters will close to fishing on Saturday, November 15.
So if you want to fish any of them, you better hustle because you are rapidly running out of time.
Those waters will not re-open until the last Saturday in April next year (April 25, 2015), and that is a long, long time to wait to wet your line.
Here is a partial list of some of the nearby waters that will be closing:

Letter: Vote for moving Carson City forward to prosperity

Editor:
This Board of Supervisors’ campaign is one of the nastiest that I can recall in our town history. I cannot speak enough for supporting the existing board and the hope that they bring to our City for growth and inspiration to improve our economy and make Carson City a destination place.

In the 25 years that I have been involved in the downtown dynamics, this is the only Board of Supervisors that is moving forward with a vision to better our City. Twenty-five years folks, it is time for a change!
