Scientists to talk about climate change threats, opportunities at Carson City lecture

Eminent scientists Dr. Charles Goldman, Dr. Sudeep Chandra and other panelists will be featured guests at Western Nevada College in Carson City where they will talk about local impacts of droughts, floods, fires and warming temperatures on the regional economy and future generations.

Let’s give this outdoors thing another try. Yesterday’s Jazz and beyond performances were moved indoors at the Brewery Arts Center when the rain hit, but I have more hope for today’s skies. Look for The Other Brothers Band this evening in the Comma Coffee Courtyard. Carson City BMX hosts practice and racing at the track in the Livermore Sports Complex; all ages are invited to participate, and one day memberships are available for those who’d like to try it out.

Frances Humphrey Lecture Series: Gold Dredges: The Land Leviathans by Rick Martin at the Nevada State Museum, 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25. The lecture is $8, free for museum members and ages 17 and under.

An in-depth presentation of the origin, operations and economics of giant land based gold dredges from the turn of the 20th century to their decline mid-century, and limited operations in the 1980-1990s.

Cave Rock boat ramp at Lake Tahoe to close Wednesday for maintenance

The boat ramp at Cave Rock will be closed Wednesday, May 13 2015 for maintenance reasons. Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park will be combining several small projects at this facility that will make the one day closure necessary. The park will be cleaning rock and sediment off the Cave Rock launch lane, repairing the dock and assisting a barge company with access to the lake for dredging activities in South Lake Tahoe.

Dayton Historical Society hosts 'Discover Gold in Nevada, Again' a Living History Event, Saturday

The Historical Society of Dayton Valley hosts “Discover Gold in Dayton, Again,” as part of the Nevada 150th celebration, Saturday, May 17 in Old Town Dayton. Everyone is invited to come celebrate the community’s “firsts."

It is the location of Nevada’s first gold discovery which took place in 1849. It was the Silver State’s first permanent settlement, founded in 1851 and is the site of Lyon County’s first courthouse, opened in 1864. It is also the site of Nevada’s first marriage and ironically, the first divorce, as well, Docent Lauri Emerich, said. “We have a lot to celebrate.”

Plans for Lake Tahoe passenger ferry would have daily service between north, south shores

Plans for vessels that would ferry up to 150 local commuters as well as visitors on Lake Tahoe with marina stops on the north and south shores are available for public comment through Jan. 3, 2014.

Carson City mystery theater auditions hosted by Proscenium Players

Proscenium Players and Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino in Carson City will hold open auditions for their 2013 mystery dinner theater production of "Murder on the Lust Boat" on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 1-2, 7 to 9 p.m. inside the casino's Juniper Room.

Judge reaffirms Tahoe pier ruling; TRPA argues environmental groups opposed protections

A federal judge on Monday reaffirmed his September ruling overturning a plan to add thousands of new boat facilities on the lake.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency had requested the judge amend his ruling. The TRPA’s motion was not an appeal. The agency will have another 30 days to appeal the judge’s September ruling to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
