Friday fun in the Carson City area: Hopefest8, films, and music

Hopefest8 at the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center is a free concert featuring folk/pop singer, Tyrone Wells, bringing awareness and raising funds for local patient resources. The grand prize of their raffle is a brand-new car, so good luck. It’s a birthday bash at Living the Good Life. Wish proprietress, Gina, many happy returns and groove to the sounds of the Trippin’ King Snakes.

Lights, camera, action! The Second annual Jukebox Film Festival begins today at the Carson City Community Center. Two full days of features, documentaries, and short films with music as the uniting theme will be shown at the Carson City Community Center: 30 unique titles representing 29 different filmmakers from countries around the world. Blood Drum Spirit, a jazz band with an African influence, is the focus of one of those films and will be performing for free at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint this evening.

You’ve only got a few days to see the Winter Art Show in the Nevada Artist Association Gallery; their new show, ‘Spring has Sprung,’ will open Sunday.

The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "Writing from Mars," by artist Rick Parsons at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. CCAI will host a reception for the artist on Friday, February 2, 5-7pm. The exhibit will be in the gallery from February 2 – May 23, 2018.

WNC offers films, art and lecture to celebrate Earth Day, raise environmental awareness

Western Nevada College celebrates Mother Earth with a variety of activities and free film screenings at the Carson City and Fallon campuses. The events are designed to generate conversation and enhance understanding about the environment.

In addition, Geology Professor Winnie Kortemeier will offer a free lecture on the Geology of America’s National Parks on Friday May 1.

UNR students, faculty and staff stand up for sexual assault awareness

Since the February release of results from a student survey regarding sexual conduct and safety, a number of efforts to strengthen a supportive campus climate, one with zero tolerance for sexual assault, sexual misconduct and other life-damaging actions, have been put in place at the University of Nevada, Reno.

In March, the University launched a 24-hour Sexual Assault/Sexual Misconduct Hotline, allowing students, faculty and staff to report incidents that occur on or off campus. The caller may remain anonymous if he/she chooses. The hotline phone number is 775-784-1030.

Carson City Screening of Singletrack High set for Dec. 3 at Brewery Arts Center

The Nevada High School Cycling League is hosting a new documentary film about the sport of high school mountain biking. Recently added as one of the emerging leagues of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association, the Nevada League will be officially launching a league race series in Fall of 2016. A handful of demonstration races to get more kids involved will be planned in 2015.

Miss Representation Screening at WNC

The Capital Branch, American Association of University Women (AAUW) is partnering with Western Nevada College (WNC) to present a screening of Miss Representation, an award-winning documentary film showing how gender stereotyping in the media impacts both men and women. The screenings will be held at the Marlette Hall on the Carson City, WNC campus from 2-4 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 18 and from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20.

First Nevada Governor’s Conference on Agriculture set in November

The inaugural Nevada Governor’s Conference on Agriculture will be Nov. 13 at the Atlantis Casino Resort and Spa in Reno, the Nevada Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday.

“I am pleased to announce the very first Nevada Governor’s Conference on Agriculture,” said Gov. Brian Sandoval. “Agriculture is one of Nevada’s leading industries, contributing more than $3 billion to the state’s economy. Pearl Harbor: Legacy of Attack documentary featured Saturday at BRIC in Carson City

Carson City Library will present National Geographic’s documentary film “Pearl Harbor: Legacy of Attack” on Saturday, Dec. 7, the 72nd anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The film will be shown at the BRIC, 109 E. Proctor Street in downtown Carson City. The film will begin at 11:00 a.m. (just before the Wine Walk).

Free screening of Vietnam War documentary today at Western Nevada College

Western Nevada College offers veterans and the public the opportunity to spend a part of Veterans Day viewing a documentary film about one of the longest and deadliest battles of the Vietnam War.

“Bravo! Common Men, Uncommon Valor” will be screened at 4 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, in Marlette Hall on the WNC Carson City campus. Admission is free.
